Abstract

Brain injuries have the third largest prevalence of other injuries in Indonesia. Most brain injuries occur on the road because of motorbike accidents. The only effective way to reduce the number of deaths due to brain injuries that occur in motorbike accidents is to use a helmet. SMA 1 Selong was chosen because the area is densely populated and awareness of wearing helmets is still low. Activities are carried out using lecture methods, demonstrations and carrying out pre-tests and post-tests. The activity was held in the SMA 1 Selong Hall on May 4, 2024, with 50 students participating in the training. The students' post-test results were 86.7, including knowledge in the good category. There is an increase in the knowledge of service participants regarding the advice of using helmets and preventing brain injuries.

Abstract

The thoracolumbar junction is highly vulnerable to injury due to its transitional biomechanics. Flexion-distraction and extension-distraction forces commonly produce AOSpine Type B injuries. To describe the biomechanics of thoracolumbar flexion and extension injuries and summarize AOSpine Type B fracture mechanisms. A narrative literature review was conducted using scientific articles, textbooks, and AOSpine guidelines focusing on thoracolumbar anatomy, biomechanics, and Type B injury mechanisms.  AOSpine Type B injuries result from tension band failure. Flexion-distraction (B1-B2) disrupts posterior structures, whereas extension-distraction (B3) causes anterior tension band failure, often influenced by spinal rigidity or high energy trauma. Understanding biomechanical mechanisms of AOSpine Type B injuries is essential for accurate classification and guiding management decisions.

Abstract

Breast cancer is the malignancy with the highest incidence among women in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). The Breast Cancer 1 (BRCA1) gene is a tumor suppressor gene that plays a crucial role in DNA repair and genome stability. A decrease in BRCA1 expression is theoretically associated with more aggressive tumor characteristics, such as a low degree of differentiation (high grade). However, data regarding the relationship between BRCA1 protein expression and the degree of cell differentiation in the patient population in NTB remains limited. This study employed a cross-sectional design with an observational analytic approach on 50 paraffin block samples from Invasive Breast Carcinoma patients at the NTB Provincial General Hospital from 2022-2023. BRCA1 protein expression was assessed using immunohistochemistry with a positive cut-off defined as staining in >20% of tumor cell nuclei. Data on the degree of differentiation (Grade 1, 2, and 3) were obtained from medical records. The relationship between the two variables was analyzed using the Lambda, Pearson’s R, and Spearman Correlation tests with a significance level of p < 0.05. The majority of samples (84%) were grade 3 tumors. The distribution of BRCA1 expression in the total sample was balanced, with 25 cases (50%) showing positive expression and 25 cases (50%) showing negative expression. In the grade 3 subgroup, this distribution remained balanced. Statistical analysis consistently showed no significant relationship between BRCA1 expression and the degree of cell differentiation (p > 0.05).

Abstract

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally, often resulting in cognitive and functional impairment. Effective neuroprotective strategies are needed to mitigate secondary injuries following TBI. This study evaluated the neuroprotective effects of combined Centella asiatica, cinnamon, and spirulina using NeuN and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) immunohistochemical staining in a rat model of TBI. Methods: Ten male Sprague-Dawley rats (200–400 g, 10–12 weeks) were subjected to TBI using the modified Marmarou model and treated orally with a combination extract of Centella asiatica, cinnamon, and spirulina for 10 days. On day 11, brain tissues were collected for histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining using NeuN and NSE markers to evaluate neurogenesis and neuronal survival. Results: Immunohistochemical analysis revealed a mean positive expression of 71.66% in the NeuN group, indicating increased neuronal survival and neurogenesis, while the NSE group consistently showed 0% positive staining across all samples. The NeuN staining provided a clear depiction of neuronal preservation in the brain tissue, whereas NSE did not demonstrate detectable neurogenesis or neuronal protection in this model. Conclusion: The administration of a combined extract of Centella asiatica, cinnamon, and spirulina demonstrated neuroprotective effects in a rat model of subacute traumatic brain injury, as indicated by increased NeuN immunohistochemical expression, reflecting enhanced neurogenesis and neuronal survival. NeuN staining provided a clearer and more sensitive depiction than NSE, supporting its reliability as an immunohistochemical marker for evaluating neuroprotection and neurogenesis during the subacute phase of TBI in models treated with herbal-based interventions.

Abstract

Abstract

Gliomas are the most common type of central nervous system neoplasms in children, exhibiting distinct clinical and biological characteristics compared to adult gliomas. Pediatric gliomas encompass various histological and molecular subtypes, ranging from low-grade gliomas (LGG) to high-grade gliomas (HGG) and diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), each with differing clinical presentations, treatment responses, and prognoses. This literature review discusses the definition, etiology, epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, treatment modalities, and prognostic factors of pediatric gliomas. Advances in imaging and molecular technologies have enabled more precise diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted molecular therapies, tailored according to tumor grade and location. A comprehensive understanding of the biological and clinical aspects of pediatric gliomas is essential for improving patient prognosis and quality of life.
