Abstract

Semiotics is the study of signs, symbols, and communication in people’s lives. This study which analyzes the letter nun in the Arabic Alphabet using Ferdinand de Saussure’s theory of semiotics, “dyadic semiotics” aims to reveal the breadth and depth of the meaning of the letter nun at the beginning of Surah al-Qalam. This study uses a descriptive method with a content analysis study approach, comprising data collection, data processing, and interpretation. The source of data are the Arabic script. The results of the study show that the ontological symbol for the letter nun is a means of teaching the sign through an established paradigm of semiotics to investigate the meaning element of the letter nun, which is the symbol of the Golden Embryo as a form of symbolic interaction throughout the cosmic order to reproduce and fertilize the world’s egg cell which is symbolized by the cup-like element of the letter nun as the “ovary” and the dot of the letter as a symbol of the fusion between the ‘egg cell and sperm cell’ to become the seed of the eternal universe towards the point of perfection of cosmic semiotic regeneration. All cosmic semiotic processes always occur in all life processes such as the semiotic processes that occur through human reproductive organs such as the testes in males and the ovaries in females in every fertilization process of the zygote. Every order of the cosmos, including human beings, originates from the process of two forms of signs, namely, that which can be seen and observed (signifier) and that which is only to be thought about through ideas (signified).

Abstract

Gender relations in Indonesian social practices tend to marginalize women, as manifested in various methods and instruments. One of them is the use of language in Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (online KBBI), an Indonesian dictionary compiled by the Indonesian government. The dictionary is the primary standard and official reference for lemmas, meanings, and examples of sentences. This study aims to analyze the unequal relations between men and women reflected in linguistic units in the online KBBI and uncover their hidden meanings. Data was collected by searching, reading, and recording (documenting) the gender-related lemmas (words), definitions of lemmas, and examples of their use in sentences in the online KBBI from 7 May to 5 June 2022, and applying Derrida’s deconstruction approach to the words and their related features, with its main principles including (1) determining the meanings that are not determined (undecidable), (2) dismantling the ideology of the text (binary logic), (3) reversing the metaphysical hierarchy and neutralize it, and (4) disseminating the meaning. This study found a metaphysical hierarchy between women and men in binary concepts, including domestic-public hierarchy, passive object-active subject hierarchy, and negative-positive hierarchy for women and men regarding lemmas, meanings, and examples of sentences in the online KBBI. These findings suggest that KBBI tends to perpetuate unequal metaphysical hierarchies between women and men in Indonesia. This article is expected to contribute to language awareness and attitudes in Indonesia in addition to improving the online KBBI in terms of its language use.

Abstract

The research was focused on investigating the tradition of modernist literary criticism, which could be found in the audience’s comments under the video on the YouTube website. As the center of the digital literary paradigm, digital poetry in videography has become an object of criticism for the Indonesian millennial generation. As was known, one of the markers of digital literacy was proficiency in using digital media. One of these media was used to produce criticism by voicing non-text semiotics. Because of that, in the research, thousands of criticisms that appeared on the poetry websites “Aksara Betha” and “Rotasi” were analyzed by reviewing examples of the critics’ expressions of non-text elements that could be found in the constructs of the two digital poetry. The results show that Indonesian millennials are digitally literate, and many explicitly mention digital art features that have attracted their interest. Some critics even express their subjective feelings about the show’s duration which is considered too short. Such practice explains that the Indonesian millennial generation has felt the effect of one of the morphological elements of digital poetry, namely space and time. Furthermore, suppose it can be called a tradition; in that case, the honesty of the critics in collecting criticism of the work they prepare is the milestone of the new tradition in literary criticism. This tradition is rarely, if not never, to be found in the tradition of printed literary criticism.

Abstract

Biosemiotics delves into the examination of meaning, communication, and signs within every living microorganism. This research endeavors to interpret the Qur'anic passage "wajalna minal maa' kulla syai'in hayyin," which translates to "we make water molecules as a source of signs of life." Its objective is to discern and elucidate the microbial presence within the water molecule by scrutinizing the term الْمَاۤءِ 'water' in surah al-Anbiya' verse 30 through a scientific lens, thus acting as a juncture between biology and semiotics. Employing a qualitative approach and content analysis as the methodological framework, the research encompasses stages of data collection, processing, interpretation, and presentation of findings. The study adopts Saussure's Dyadic Model as the theoretical foundation to construe the meaning of semiotic signs of water from a biological perspective. The outcomes of the research underscore the existence of microorganisms within the water molecule, signifying the evolution of life, thereby enabling a reconfiguration of the term 'alma'' into the realm of semiotic signs through the synthesis of ideas in studies of semiotic-biology. Biosemiotics perceives the evolution of life and semiotic systems as distinct yet interlinked studies, both striving to reconstruct the same underlying meaning.

Abstract

The research aimed to identify potential words in the Indonesian language and sought to explain why these words were not included in Indonesian vocabulary lists or were difficult to realize in natural conversations. In order to achieve these goals, data were collected using introspection, documentation, and interview methods. Furthermore, the collected data were analyzed using a generative morphology approach, mainly related to concepts of potential words. According to the approach, each language has (1) a List of Morphemes (LM), (2) Word Formation Rules (WFR), and (3) a Filter (F). WFR stated that every language was capable of producing new potential words, yet not all those potential words could easily pass through the filter to enter the lexicon of actual words used in real life. The potential words discussed in the research were restricted to those showing morpho-syntactic interconnection among Indonesian affixes. The results indicate that numerous potential words in the Indonesian language are constructed out of such affixal interconnection. However, the potential words do not surface in the lexicon for two reasons: first, because the words fail to compete with others that compensate for their absence; second, because the words are difficult to manifest due to their low frequency in everyday speech.

Abstract

Critical discourse studies as manifested are not just an analysis of people's social behavior as reflected through language. In relation to critical discourse studies, the language units that are the object of study are narrated as a reflection of social praxis, where linguistic units that are suspected of containing criticism can be used as material to reconstruct the intent or purpose of conveying criticism; whether criticism is aimed only at building humor between epistemic groups or is it more than just criticizing, meaning that criticism is used to fight against the domination of power. This research aims to describe the status of criticism in the principles of interpretation of critical discourse studies, especially with regard to global, local meaning and context models. The source of research data was obtained by transcribing criticism of subpoena video footage on Deddy Corbuzier's YouTube channel. The research used a qualitative descriptive approach, in which data was collected using a free-to-read, skillful listening method. The data is then analyzed by interpreting the context, semantic macrostructure, local and global meaning, relevance of the formal structure of discourse, and interpretation of the context model using the extralingual equivalent method. The results of the research show that the criticism made by comedians on Deddy Corbuzier's summons channel contains three strategic problems which are manifested by interpreting global, local meanings, as well as the discourse context model in the criticism.
