Abstract

As the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, distance learning requires teachers to make learning more interesting yet achieve learning outcomes. This study aims to produce a valid, practical, and effective product in mobile learning based on procedural and conceptual knowledge for elementary school students. This study uses Research and Development with the ADDIE model. The subjects of this study were 11 elementary school fifth-grade students. The material and media expert is a lecturer in mathematics education and information technology education, respectively. The validity test was carried out using the expert judgment method. Eleven fifth-grade elementary school students assessed the practicality and effectiveness tests to determine the responses and results in fractional mathematics after using the developed mobile learning. This study uses both quantitative and qualitative data, which were collected using questionnaires and learning outcomes tests. The validity of mobile learning produces an average of 3.59 or is in the interval 2.50 ≤ Rv ≤ 4.00 with valid criteria. The effectiveness of mobile learning is obtained from the pretest and posttest data. The practicality of mobile learning obtained an average of 3.82 or is in the interval 2.50 ≤ Rk ≤ 4.00 with practical criteria. The effectiveness of mobile learning shows a significance value of 0.0010 or < 0.0050, which means that there are differences in student learning outcomes before and after using mobile learning. Thus, the development of procedural and conceptual-based mobile learning on fractional material in fifth-grade elementary school can be categorized as valid, practical, and effective.

Abstract

The difficulty of elementary school students in solving simple fractions is because students fail to understand the concept of simple fractions. PowToon's multimedia integration of the constructivist approach is great for facilitating the conception of simple fractions. The purpose of this study was to analyze constructivist-based PowToon animation multimedia (CoPAM) as a valid, practical, and effective learning medium for simple fractions. PowToon was developed using a research and development (R&D) method with a define, design, and development (3-D) model involving 12 fourth grade elementary school students. The data analysis used was descriptive analysis with data collection methods using observation, tests (pre-test and post-test), validation questionnaires (validation of media and material experts, teacher responses, and student responses), and documentation. The results showed that CoPAM had very feasible product criteria in terms of validity, practicality, and effectiveness to facilitate elementary school students in understanding simple fractions. Recommendations for the next study are needed to further develop and test CoPAM products or the like (could go through the dissemination stage) by involving a larger and wider number of participants by testing inferential statistics.

Abstract

Traditional games can be used as a context to understand mathematical concepts. Many studies on learning trajectory (LT), which are set in the context of traditional games, have been carried out. However, no study focuses on using the context of the traditional kempreng game to facilitate primary students in understanding integer addition and subtraction. This research aims to design an LT through traditional game kempreng to help construct students' understanding and mathematical concepts through various activities that have been developed. This study uses design research with stages, namely preliminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. This study produces LT which consists of five activities, namely: consisting of calculating addition points through the kempreng context, calculating subtraction (difference) through the kempreng context, performing additional operations on the “same” kempreng card, performing subtraction operations on “different” kempreng, and determining the results of addition or subtraction operations of number cards with the opposing group. In this study, LT set in the traditional game of kempreng can be used as a context in preparing learning designs that could stimulate students thinking in understanding the mathematical concepts of integer addition and subtraction. The impact of the research design also occurs on teachers. Learning becomes a student center, the teacher as a facilitator. The results of this study can have implications as one of the considerations for using contexts with real and cultural backgrounds to reduce or build a meaningful understanding of the concept of integer addition and subtraction for primary students.

Abstract

Learning trajectory on the topic of plane figures (i.e., perimeter and area of squares and rectangles) is necessary for elementary students to facilitate meaningful learning and predict their learning progress. This study aims to develop a learning trajectory through various tasks for the perimeter and area of squares and rectangles that can help students develop understanding and construct mathematical concepts. Study participants were fourth grade elementary students. The method used was design research, which has three stages: preparing for the experiment, teaching, and retrospective analysis. This study used data collection instruments in worksheets, observation sheets, interview guidelines, and field notes. Research results obtained included a learning trajectory that contains adequate learning activities to facilitate learning for elementary students on the perimeter and area of squares and rectangles. Adequate learning trajectory is obtained in hypothetical learning trajectory (HLT) 2, which was previously revised from HLT 1. Learning trajectory developed through a variety of tasks can significantly construct and facilitate elementary students’ knowledge to learn the concepts of perimeter and area of squares and rectangles.

Abstract

This study investigates the process of forming Anna’s visual and symbolic representations at each stage of the development of relational understanding in solving fractional problems. This study focuses on Anna (pseudonym), a 4th-grade elementary school student in Sidoarjo Regency. Anna possessed the complete process of forming visual and symbolic representations and is the only student who is able to provide logical arguments to support her answer. This research is qualitative in nature with a case study. The results were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model by reducing the data, presenting the data, and drawing conclusions. Results show the process of forming Anna’s visual and symbolic representations at each stage of the development of relational understanding in solving fractional problems. Anna has difficulty forming visual representations because she has weaknesses in the concept of fractional equations and fractional operations. This resulted in the process of forming symbolic representations and procedural knowledge that tends to be rote. These findings indicate that Anna developed a relational understanding, namely, a conceptual understanding of fractions. The process of forming a visual representation is the main basis before the formation of a symbolic representation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know, to describe, and to analyze students' mental model on negative integers. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The data collection techniques use test, observation, interview, and documentation. The data analysis techniques use data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The result shows that there are three characteristics of students' metal model, the characteristics of early mental model on negative integers are only able to understand the minus sign as a count operation, students with formal mental model characteristics on negative integers understand the existence of negative numbers that have values smaller than 0 but do not understand that numbers going left on the number line, it can be smaller values. Students with formal mental model characteristics on negative integers understand the direction on the number line and the value of each number correctly. It can be concluded that in understanding the scale of negative integer values and negative integer places on number line, every student has different characteristics. The characteristics of the early mental model are the characteristics of the lowest mental model, the characteristics of the synthesis mental model are the characteristics of the moderate mental model and the characteristics of the formal mental model are the characteristics of the highest mental model in understanding negative integers.
