Abstract

Area measurement is the number of measurement units used to cover an area, many students experience low understanding of the concept of measuring the area of an area. Many previous studies have shown that most students find it difficult to measure area. Therefore, the application of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach can help students to increase knowledge and develop competencies about broad measurement. The measurement of area is not far from the spatial structure, that in order to overcome the weaknesses in understanding the concept of area measurement and encourage a better understanding of area, it must be based on the development of competence in the spatial structure of students through achievement at each level. This study uses a literature study approach. The subject is elementary school students. The data obtained by researchers is from various literatures that have been reviewed and analyzed by researchers. The results of this study are that students can reach every level of the student's spatial structure with the RME approach. And there are differences from students at each level to solve a problem related to the spatial structure of students.

Abstract

Elementary school students' difficulties in solving literacy problems are caused by students' lack of understanding of mathematical concepts. Using a specific regional context in literacy problems is essential to analyze layers of understanding elementary school more deeply. Based on Pirie-Kieren's theory, the study aims to analyze layers of understanding elementary school students in solving literacy problems in the context of Sidoarjo. The theory consists of eight understanding layers: primitive knowing, image making, image having, property noticing, formalising, observing, structuring, and inventing. A qualitative approach with a case study type was used as the research method. The research participants were 26 fifth-grade elementary school students. The determination of the research subjects was done by purposive technique. In this, the emphasis of determining the subject is taken on three categories of understanding by having one student each in the low, medium, and high categories. The results show that the layers of understanding of elementary school students are at the highest, namely observing. In addition, literacy problems in Sidoarjo contexts can overstimulate students' understanding. The context of learning should be used in Sidoarjo. Future research recommendations suggested using the regional context as a background for literacy problems in learning or problem-solving; this is needed to explore and develop layers of understanding to a higher level.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the types (concepts, principles, and verbal) and forms of difficulties that elementary school students did in solving problems of perimeter and area of plane figures based on their level of completion ability. This research method is qualitative with a case study type. The technique of taking research subjects used purposive sampling by selecting three subjects of fifth-grade elementary school students based on the level of mathematical ability (low, moderate, and high) in solving perimeter and area of plane figures. Data collection techniques using tests and interviews. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, data presentation, and concluding. The results showed that students with low levels of ability experienced verbal difficulties in not working on the questions according to the instructions. Students with a moderate level of ability face conceptual difficulties in the form of being unable to make relevant decisions according to the requirements of the questions. In addition, students experience principle difficulties in the form of an inability to determine the relevant factors and incorrectly using the perimeter unit for the area unit. Students with a high level of ability experience principle difficulties in using formulas, so they tend to experience inaccuracies in solving problems. Other findings in this study provide that elementary school students have difficulty solving problems of perimeter and area of a plane figure because of basic problems, namely experiencing obstacles in verbal problems and inadequate conceptual knowledge.

Abstract

Elementary school students need proportional reasoning inside or outside the classroom. However, students still have difficulties in using proportional reasoning. The worked example strategy has been empirically proven to facilitate students' proportional reasoning. The study aimed to analyze the effect of the implementation of the worked example strategy on students' proportional reasoning. The research method used mixed methods with a sequential explanatory design. The research was conducted in one of the elementary schools in Krembung, East Java, Indonesia. The sample technique used was random and purposive sampling. The instruments used include proportional reasoning tests and interview guidelines. Data analysis used paired-sample t-test and thematic analysis. The results showed that there was a significant influence on proportional reasoning in the implementation of the worked example strategy. The success of proportional reasoning can be seen in the aspects of changes in two quantities and proportions. The results of this study have implications for mathematics learning. Teachers can apply the worked example strategy so that students are accustomed to imitating problem-solving steps, which can then be developed into more complex solutions to solve other problems.
