Abstract

This study aims to determine the analogy characteristics of elementary school students in proposing word problems. Analogical reasoning is a complex process that involves retrieving structured knowledge from long-term memory, representing and manipulating role-filling ties in working memory, identifying elements that play appropriate roles, generating new conclusions, and learning abstract schemes. The characteristics of analogy are categorized into four: (1) reformulation, rearrangement of information by changing the order of numbers but still paying attention to the order of mathematical operations. (2) reconstruction, Students rearrange information in the initial problem so that the problem appears different but is identical to the initial problem. (3) reproduction, the resulting product creates a new problem that is different by changing the structure of the initial problem. (4) imitation, changing the structure of the given problem by expanding the goal statement so that the initial problem becomes a step of the solution process of the new problem. Students' failure in making problem posing is included in non-reformulation, where students cannot make problem posing on word problems according to the problem structure

Abstract

This study analyzes the analogy process when elementary school students in pose area problems. This research used a qualitative method with a case study approach. The participants in this study were fifth-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Krembung, totaling 53 students. The selection of participants was made purposively. Data were collected using tests, interviews, and observations. Data analysis techniques used data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Indicators of analogy process assessment based on Gentner Forbus's theory are retrieval, mapping, abstraction, representation, and evaluation. The results of this study indicate that elementary school students can use analogies in the learning process, but in the analogy process, there are differences between some students. The problems proposed by students are categorized as varied problems and complete processes, varied and incomplete processes, not varied and incomplete processes. In this study, it is suggested that novice elementary school students posing problems should use analogies as a reasoning process so that in posing new problems, they can come up with creative ideas.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the strategies used by elementary school students in solving area measurement problems. The research method used was a descriptive qualitative approach. The data collection techniques used in this research are task, interview, observation, and documentation. The data presentation techniques used were data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification. The research subjects used were elementary school students in grades 3, 4, 5, and 6. In this study, it was found that there were six strategies used by students in solving area measurement problems, namely 1) counting the number of square units, 2) decomposing the shape, 3) applying length reasoning, 4) counting all units, 5) multiplying length and width, 6) dividing the whole by the number of divisions. Counting all units is the most widely used strategy by elementary school students. Solving area measurement problems is influenced by students' experience obtaining area measurement material. The results of this study suggest that students prioritize strategies in problem solving. If the strategy students use is correct, then the arrangement structure regarding the solution will be appropriate.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the characteristics of elementary school students' analogies in proposing area problems. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative using a case study approach. The characteristics of analogy in the submission of area problems can be categorized into three: (1) Identical-reformulation is rearranging the elements in the problem structure in ways that do not change the nature of the problem. (2) Identical-different-reconstruction is modifying and maintaining some elements of the form in the initial problem so that the resulting problem looks slightly different. (3) Different-imitation is changing and adding new shape elements that are not in the initial problem to produce a different problem. The results of the research showed that the characteristic most often found in students is imitation, where the problem produced is different from the initial problem given. So the different imitation characteristics that appear most often correspond to replacement characteristics, namely the problem posing product based on the initial problem or source problem by changing the context of the problem, namely changing the shape of the cake slice.

Empirical evidence shows that elementary school students rarely or almost never face assignments that demand problem-solving strategies. This results in elementary school students experiencing difficulty or failure in posing problems. Problem posing based on real-world contexts for elementary school students is expected to be an initial solution to evaluate students' knowledge, ideas, and problem-solving experiences. The research aims to classify the problem posing strategies of elementary school students based on the real-world context. The type of research is classified as qualitative research with a case study approach. Data collection techniques include tests and interviews. Data analysis techniques are data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research participants were 52 fifth-grade elementary school students using purposive sampling to select research subjects. The results found three student strategies in proposing problems: reformulation, reconstruction, and imitation. The reformulation strategy is the least used strategy by elementary school students. Meanwhile, educators and future researchers can use source problems with a real-world context for elementary school students, so that students can successfully solve source problems that lead to student success in posing problems.

Abstract

Statistical literacy emphasizes the ability to read, interpret, understand, communicate, and critically analyze information data in the current century. Students' statistical literacy skills in elementary schools are considered insufficient. The reason is the limited problem-solving process on statistical literacy material. This research is to solve problems regarding elementary school students' statistical literacy by using the DAPIC problem-solving process (Define, Assess, Plan, Implement, and Communicate). An experimental method with pretest-posttest control group design was used on 38 elementary school students. The instrument used was a statistical literacy test analyzed using the Aiken V formula. The results of the study provided an average N-Gain value in the moderate category, which is less than equal to 0.3-0.7. The Wilcoxon test shows a value of 0.002, so there is an average difference between the two classes. Thus, the DAPIC problem-solving process positively impacts elementary school students' statistical literacy.
