Abstract

The high prevalence of communicable and non-communicable diseases in Indonesia, such as periodontal disease, malaria, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s, highlights the need for safer and more affordable alternative therapies. One promising natural source is mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.), which contains xanthone compounds with diverse biological activities. This study aims to review the potential of xanthones from mangosteen pericarp extract as active drug candidates. A comprehensive literature review was conducted by searching articles in Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed databases using relevant keywords including “xanthone” and “Garcinia mangostana.” Eligible articles were selected based on inclusion criteria (2014–2024, full-text availability, relevance, and reputable indexing). From 221 identified studies, 9 key articles were analyzed in detail. The findings reveal that xanthone compounds exhibit a wide range of pharmacological activities, including antibacterial, antimalarial, antidiabetic, anticancer, cardioprotective, anti-Alzheimer’s, protective effects against oxidative stress in keratinocytes, and potential COVID-19 therapy through ACE2 and Mpro blockade. These results suggest that xanthones from mangosteen peel hold great potential to be developed as active compounds in modern herbal medicines. Nevertheless, further studies, particularly clinical trials, are required to validate their safety and efficacy.

Abstract

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance is a global threat that drives the search for new antimicrobial agents derived from natural sources. Temulawak (Curcuma xanthorrhiza) contains two major active compounds, xanthorrhizol and curcuminoid, known for their antimicrobial properties. This review aims to analyze and compare the antimicrobial potential of these compounds to determine the most prospective candidate for development as an active natural antimicrobial agent in Indonesia. A systematic literature review was conducted using the PRISMA guideline on articles published between 2015 and 2025, obtained from Google Scholar and PubMed. Of the 251 articles identified, 10 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. The results indicate that xanthorrhizol exhibits stronger and broader antimicrobial activity, with a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of 16 µg/mL, inhibition zones of 12–14 mm, and inhibition rates exceeding 90% against Candida albicans and Enterococcus faecalis. In contrast, curcuminoid shows variable activity (inhibition zones of 0–16 mm) and its effectiveness increases after photodynamic activation (Photodynamic Therapy, PDT) through the formation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). In conclusion, xanthorrhizol is more promising as a primary natural antimicrobial agent, while curcuminoid serves as a complementary compound to enhance antimicrobial effectiveness.

Abstract

Due to environmental changes and pollution due to free radicals, interest in alternative medicine is increasing, especially on the island of Java. Natural health solutions are increasingly needed, which is what prompted this research. We measured the concentration of antioxidant compounds using the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method and the free radical scavenging capacity of plant extracts using the DPPH method. Using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and UV-Vis spectrophotometric methods with IC50 value determination, this article aims to investigate and compare potential herbal plants found on the island of Java. This research was carried out using a literature review method by considering inclusion and exclusion criteria with keywords such as antioxidants, herbal medicinal plants, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and DPPH method. The results showed that the plant species studied had different antioxidant activities. Some herbs have high levels of antioxidants, so they may be used as natural health supplements. Additionally, this study emphasizes how important it is to use accurate analytical methods to evaluate antioxidant content. To provide a comprehensive picture of the antioxidant potential of each plant, UV-Vis spectrophotometry and DPPH methods work together. The results show that this study identified several herbal plants on the island of Java that have high levels of antioxidants. These plants can be used to develop herbal-based health products. To carry out a comparative evaluation of antioxidant content, the UV-Vis and DPPH spectrophotometric methods were proven to be effective. This discovery can be the basis for further research and development of more effective and useful herbal health products.
