Abstract

Abstract

The Batang Mersip River is a river that has potential in capture fisheries, one of which is in Mersip Village, Limun District. Fishing activities in the Batang Mersip River operated by fishermen include bamboo traps. This study aims to analyze the effect of different baits on fish catches in bamboo traps in the Batang Mersip River. This study used an experimental fishing method. This study consisted of 3 treatments based on the type of bait used with 30 bamboo units, each bait consisting of 10 bamboo traps with a bait weight of 50 grams per trap with 10 repetitions. This study was conducted for 10 days. Each treatment was given a distance of 10 meters. The results of this study showed that different types of bait had a significant effect (P <0.05) on the number (tails) and weight (grams) of fish. The highest number of catches was in the cricket bait treatment of 102 fish and the lowest catch was in the treatment without bait of 16 fish. Meanwhile, the highest catch weight was obtained with cricket bait, weighing 4850 grams, while the lowest was obtained with the unbaited treatment, weighing 311 grams. This study concluded that the effect of providing cricket bait in bamboo traps yielded better results than worm bait and unbaited fish.

Abstract

The condition of the Batang Asai River in Sarolangun Regency, Jambi, has experienced a decline in water quality due to anthropogenic activities such as land clearing, settlement, and mining. This condition threatens the sustainability of fish populations, especially those from the Cyprinidae family, which are an important and environmentally sensitive group of fish for consumption, one of which is the lampam (Barbonymus schwanefeldii). However, scientific information on the bioecology of lampam in this region is very limited. Therefore, this research is needed to provide basic data to support adaptive conservation and fisheries management strategies. This study aims to analyze the growth patterns and gonadal maturity levels of lampam in the Batang Asai River, Sarolangun Regency, as a basis for inland fisheries management. A total of 113 fish, consisting of 64 males and 49 females, were observed. Male fish had a positive allometric growth pattern, while female fish had an isometric growth pattern. Analysis of Gonad Maturity Level (GML) found fish with GML I to GML IV, but immature gonads dominated the condition of the fish. In general, the water quality of the Batang Asai River still supports fish life, as can be seen from the growth patterns of the fish, but most of the fish found during the study were still immature despite the presence of fish with GML I to GML IV.

Abstract

Small-scale fisheries in coastal areas utilize various fishing gears, including bottom gillnet, which can catch fish species with different trophic levels. Fishing activities may influence the trophic structure of fish communities and the vulnerability of species to exploitation. This study aimed to analyze the trophic structure, vulnerability level, conservation status based on the IUCN Red List, and Mean Trophic Level (MTL) of fish species caught using bottom gillnet in the coastal waters of Lambur Luar Village, Tanjung Jabung Timur Regency. The study used a survey method with data collected through direct observation of fishermen's catches. Data analysis included catch species composition, trophic level values obtained from the FishBase database, vulnerability analysis of each species, identification of IUCN conservation status, and calculation of Mean Trophic Level (MTL) based on the proportion of catch composition. The results showed that the catches consisted of 20 species, with trophic groups dominated by mesopredators (50%) and top predators (25%), while omnivores and herbivores were found in smaller proportions. Vulnerability analysis indicated that most species were categorized as having low to moderate vulnerability, although several species showed high vulnerability to fishing pressure. Based on the IUCN Red List, most species were classified as Least Concern (LC). The calculated Mean Trophic Level (MTL) was 3.2, indicating that the catches were dominated by mid-level carnivorous fish species.

Abstract

Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) are widely used to improve fishing efficiency, and their effectiveness depends largely on attractor design and visual stimuli such as light. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of combining raffia rope attractors and LED lighting on surface FADs in attracting positive phototactic fish (Poecilia reticulata), and to assess their vertical distribution and behavioral responses. A laboratory experiment was conducted using a factorial Completely Randomized Design (position × light presence) with four treatments: bottom without light, bottom with light, surface without light, and surface with light. The primary parameter measured was the number of fish within a 10 cm attraction zone, recorded every 10 minutes for 60 minutes. Data were analyzed using Two-Way ANOVA at a 5% significance level. The results showed that FAD position significantly affected the number of fish approaching the attraction zone (p < 0.05), whereas light presence alone had no significant effect (p > 0.05). However, a significant interaction between position and light was detected (p < 0.05). The highest effectiveness was observed in the surface FAD without light (77%), suggesting that the visual structure of raffia attractors at the surface was sufficient to induce strong aggregation. These findings indicate that the effectiveness of raffia attractors is primarily driven by placement position rather than additional lighting, although their interaction still contributes to fish aggregation behavior. This study provides a practical basis for prioritizing surface FAD placement with raffia attractors over the use of additional lighting in small-scale fisheries.

Abstract

The fourfinger threadfin (Eleutheronema tetradactylum) is an economically important but increasingly threatened species classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. This study examined biological aspects of E. tetradactylum in the waters of Mendahara Ilir, East Tanjung Jabung Regency, Jambi. The research focused on the length-weight relationship (LWR), condition factor (K), relative weight (Wr), and size-based fishing eligibility. A total of 340 specimens, consisting 161 males and 179 females, were collected using gill nets. The LWR equations revealed  W = 0.002444L3.3306 (R² = 0.9571) for males and W = 0.005523L3.1116 (R² = 0.9623) for females, indicating positive allometric growth in males and near-isometric growth in females. The t-test confirmed that both b values differed significantly from 3 (p < 0.001). The mean condition factor (K) was 2.83 ± 0.14 for males and 2.91 ± 0.07 for females, while the mean relative weight (Wr) was 101.46 for males and 100.98 for females, indicating good physiological condition and favourable habitat quality. However, analysis of fishing eligibility revealed that only 48.60% of female fish had reached the minimum catchable size (Lc = 40.0 cm), compared to 72.05% of males that exceeded their threshold (Lc = 29.0 cm). The high proportion of undersized female fish raises serious concerns about potential recruitment overfishing. These findings underscore the urgent need to implement for size-selective fishing regulations in Mendahara Ilir waters.
