Abstract

Testosterone is a steroid hormone produced by Leydig cells in testis. Testosterone levels can be measured through a saliva sampel. Testosterone have effect in the cardiovascular system. Testosterone can affect cardiac contractility and has a cardioprotective role in maintaining the autonomic balance of the heart. Cardiac autonomic activity can be assessed by Heart Rate Varibility (HRV). This study aims to determine the effect of salivary testosterone levels on HRV in FK Unsoed students. This study was an analytic observational study with a cross sectional approach. The number of subjects in this study were 31 students who were taken by consecutive sampling, with inclusion criteria, namely male gender, age 17-25 years, agreed to the informed consent, BMI 18,5-24,9 kg/m2, body temperature 36,5-37,5 ℃, and low to moderate level of physical activity. Testosterone levels were measured using the Salimetrics ELISA method. HRV were measured using a POLAR M400 heart rate monitor and the Welltory application with the result of HRV parameters in the form of SDNN. The data normality test used the Saphiro-Wilk test. Bivariate analysis used Pearson’s correlative parametric test. The subjects of the study had a low mean testosterone saliva levels, namely 12,38±3,70 pg/mL and a low mean SDNN of 56,74±19,70 ms. The results of the Pearson correlation test of testosterone with SDNN shows the value of r = 0,147 and the value of p = 0,429, so it can be concluded that there is no correlation between testosterone saliva levels and HRV in SDNN parameters.

Abstract

Actinomycetes are Gram-positive bacteria, anaerobic or facultative with a fungal-like morphology, widely distributed in both waters and land. Actinomycetes are bacteria with the largest taxonomic unit with diverse phyla diversity related to morphology, physiology, and metabolic ability. Actinomycetes have been known to have many benefits in medicine, including antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, and anticancer. The content of secondary metabolites produced by actinomycetes varies widely. Actinomycetes contain active compounds from the polyene, terpenoid, phenolic, polyketide, phenazine, piperazine, and non-polyene groups, which have been shown to have antibacterial, antifungal, and antibiofilm activities. Streptomycetes known produce most of the antibiotics. Many compounds have been isolated from actinomycetes have antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities. It can be developed for further research because there are no antibiofilm candidate drugs from actinomycetes that the FDA approved until now. This paper discusses the active compounds isolated from actinomycetes which have antibacterial, antifungal, and antibiofilm activities, and their mechanism of action.

Abstract

Sleep is a sedentary mental and physical condition. Sleep is necessary for emotional, physical, and cognitive well-being and accounts for approximately one-third of a person's life. Sleep happens in cycles in which the body alternates between two modes: REM sleep and non-REM sleep. Behavioural observation, physiological monitoring, or a mix of the two can be used for the assessment of sleep and wake. Current clinical recommendations for scoring PSGs describe three phases of progressively. The majority of hormones in plasma show strong 24-hour cycles, highlighting the significance of the circadian clock and sleep-related impacts on hormone release and/or metabolism. Lack of sufficient sleep for duration or quality might affect one's ability to function normally and maintain good health. The typical adult requires seven or more hours of sleep each night to be healthy. This report will inform the current state of the science of sleep and sleep deprivation.

Abstract

Decreased sleep quality in the elderly can affect protein formation and maintenance of muscle mass. Decreased muscle function in the elderly can have an impact on daily activities and can affect morbidity and mortality. A simple measurement of overall muscle strength can be done by testing handgrip strength using a handgrip dynamometer. Several recent studies have shown a close relationship between sleep quality and muscle strength. This study aims to determine differences in the value of hand grip strength according to sleep quality in the elderly population at the Yogyakarta elderly Posyandu. The research was conducted with cross sectional method. The research subjects were elderly posyandu participants in the city of Yogyakarta with a total of 255. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. Handgrip strength is measured with a Takei Handgrip Dynamometer. Of the 255 research subjects, there were 146 (57.3%) elderly people with good sleep quality and 109 (42.7%) elderly people with poor sleep quality. The average value of hand grip strength in the elderly group with good sleep quality was 22.64 kg and the average value of hand grip strength in the elderly group with poor sleep quality was 14.28 kg. With the Mann Whitney test, statistically significant results were obtained with p <0.001. This study shows that there is a significant difference in the value of hand grip strength between the elderly with good sleep quality and the elderly with poor sleep quality with a mean difference in hand grip strength value of 8.36 kg where the minimum difference that is considered clinically significant is 6.5 kg

Abstract

ABSTRACT. Butanol-HCl4 (Bu-HCl4) and Protein-Precipitation (P-P) are methods that proposed to determine the content of free tannins, protein-bound tannins, and fiber-bound tannins. This study aims to determine the feasibility of tannin measurements by both methods and validation of Analytical Methods (VMA) evaluates specific parameters like accuracy, precision, specificity, and linearity through lab testing. The material used was twenty C. calothyrsus leaves which collected randomly from different trees. The samples were measured by both methods in triplicates for qantification and validation. The obtained data were analyzed by descriptive and t-test to compare both methods. The analysis of VMA shows that the P-P method yields higher accuracy compared to the Bu-HCl method in percentage recovery rates. The quantification of free tannins, protein-bound tannin, tannin fiber, and total tannin by the Bu-HCl4 method versus the P-P method showed significantly higher values (p<0.01) for the Bu-HCl4 method: free tannins (13.44±0.54 vs. 7.11±0.16), protein-bound tannin (2.80±0.44 vs. 1.52±0.20), tannin fiber (5.20±0.45 vs. 1.00±0.21), and total tannin (21.50±0.88 vs. 9.59±0.36). The methode validation result of Bu-HCl4 and P-P methods in the accuracy was different, but the linearity test showed a good response. In conclusion, the tannin quantivication by the P-P and Bu-HCl4 can be applied for C. calothyrsus analysis. The total tannin content was higher if quantified by the Bu-HCl4 method compared to P-P. The accuracy of the P-P found higher than the Bu-HCl4 method. Keywords: Butanol-HCl4, leaves C. calothyrsus, protein-precipitation methods, tannin.

Abstract

Anemia is one of the most common nutritional problems in pregnant women. It is defined as a condition in which the hemoglobin (Hb) level is lower than normal. The main cause of anemia in obstetrics is iron deficiency. To prevent this condition, the Government of Indonesia through the Ministry of Health made a rule by giving iron tablets to pregnant women at least 90 tablets during pregnancy (Kemenkes RI, 2022). However, some people are often bored with this pharmacological therapy due to the nausea and vomiting effect of the iron smell. Therefore, the development of alternative anemia therapy has been done to minimize those problems. One of the herbal ingredients that are being studied for its potential as anti-anemia in pregnancy is beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.). This research is included in the type of literature review. The selected literature is research articles published in the last 10 years (2013 to 2023). There are 10 articles that match the topic of study. A total of 7 publications demonstrated the effect of beetroot on anemia in pregnant women during the pregnancy period, and 2 articles in the post-partum period. A study performed in vivo experiments on pregnant female rats. Almost all of the studies did intervention by giving subjects beetroot juice. Only one study used beets as an intervention as ice cream. The results show that beetroot has the potential to prevent and treat anemia in pregnancy by increasing hemoglobin levels and the amounts of hematocrit. It contains a high level of folic acid which is important for normal cell and tissue growth. The iron content of beetroot also plays an essential role in the human body transporting oxygen to red blood cells, so it helps to cure anemia.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is still a major health problem in the world today because the prevalence remains increasing. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes, accounting for over 90% of all diabetes cases. This disease is characterized by insulin resistance, where the body cannot fully respond to insulin. As a result, glucose levels in the blood continue to increase (hyperglycemia). The main of Type 2 DM management is a healthy lifestyle. In addition, pharmacological therapy is also needed to keep blood glucose levels in diabetics under control. However, antidiabetic medicines can cause some side effects. Therefore, the development of alternative diabetes therapy has been done to minimize side effects. One of the herbal ingredients that are being studied for its potential as an anti-diabetic is noni (Morinda citrifolia L.).Objective: The aim of the study is to review and find out more about the potential of noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) as an anti-diabetic.Methods: This research is included in the type of literature review. The kinds of literature are English and Indonesian language research articles related to the topic searched by using database sources from ProQuest, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The research articles were published in the last 10 years (2012 to 2022). Results: There are 14 kinds of literature that match the topic of study. A total of 12 kinds of literature are in vivo studies on animals and 2 literature studies on humans. The result shows that noni has an antidiabetic effect by lowering blood glucose levels and improving other parameters. Parts of Noni that have the potential to control Type 2 DM are fruit and leaves, which can be in the form of extracts, juices, or fermented products. Further research is needed to evaluate the toxicity, the content of active compounds, and the expression of genes related to Type 2 DM for ensuring the mechanism of noni in controlling hyperglycemia. Human studies with more respondents are also needed to confirm the findings of existing studies. Conclusion: Noni has an antidiabetic effect by lowering blood glucose levels and improving other parameters. Based on human studies, noni fruit juice can serve as a suitable addition to the diet of Type 2 DM patients.
