Abstract

ABSTRACT Nurses play a vital role in healthcare services, but the high workload makes them vulnerable to burnout, which can lead to a decline in caring behavior. According to Watson's theory, caring encompasses physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects; however, burnout can hinder its optimal implementation. This study aims to determine the relationship between burnout syndrome and caring behavior of nurses based on Watson's theory in operating room nurses and Dahlia ward inpatient nurses at Mardi Waluyo Regional General Hospital in Blitar City. This study used a cross-sectional design. The population included all operating room and inpatient nurses in the Dahlia ward at Mardi Waluyo Regional Public Hospital, Blitar City. A total of 52 respondents were selected using a total sampling technique. Data were analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation test. The findings showed a significant relationship between burnout syndrome and caring behavior among operating room and Dahlia ward inpatient nurses at Mardi Waluyo Hospital, with a p-value of 0.000 < 0.05. Nearly half of the respondents (38.5%) experienced a low level of burnout syndrome, and almost half (28.8%) demonstrated good caring behavior. The correlation coefficient showed an r-value of 0.894, indicating a very strong correlation between burnout syndrome and nurses’ caring behavior. The positive correlation result suggests that the lower the level of burnout syndrome, the better the caring behavior demonstrated by the nurses. Hospital management is expected to pay greater attention to efforts in preventing burnout syndrome among nurses, as this condition has been proven to significantly affect nurses’ caring behavior. Considering that Watson’s theory emphasizes that true caring arises from the nurse’s full presence and emotional balance, strategies are needed to support nurses’ psychological stability, such as excellent service training and work rotation. Keywords: Burnout Syndrome, Caring Behavior, Nurse.

Abstract

The prevalence of caesarean section (C-section) deliveries has risen to encompass over 1 in 5 births (21%) globally and is projected to increase to nearly one-third (29%) by 2030. With this growing trend, optimal patient preparation becomes essential for ensuring safe and successful outcomes. Patient preparation involves multiple aspects, including physical readiness, nutritional status, gastrointestinal and abdominal hygiene, surgical site shaving, personal hygiene, bladder emptying, preoperative exercises, mental preparation, and informed consent. Mental preparedness, in particular, is closely associated with achieving maternal role attainment, as described in Mercer’s theory. This study aimed to explore the significant relationship between maternal role attainment, based on Mercer's theory, and the readiness of pregnant women to undergo C-section surgery. A quantitative correlational research design was employed, involving a sample of 52 pregnant women scheduled for C-section surgery, selected using the Total Sampling technique. Maternal role attainment (independent variable) was assessed using a validated questionnaire, while surgical readiness (dependent variable) was measured using a readiness questionnaire that had undergone validity testing. Data were analyzed using the Spearman Rank Correlation test. The results revealed that 26 participants (50.0%) had achieved their maternal role, and 47 participants (90.4%) demonstrated readiness for C-section surgery. Statistical analysis indicated a significant positive relationship between maternal role attainment and surgical readiness, with a p-value of 0.03 (<0.05) and a correlation coefficient of 0.401, suggesting a moderate and positive correlation. The conclusion is there are relationship between maternal role attainment, based on Mercer's theory, and the readiness of pregnant women to undergo C-section surgery. These findings imply that the greater the maternal role attainment, the higher the readiness of pregnant women to undergo C-section surgery.

Abstract

Perineal trauma is a common complication in primigravida women during vaginal childbirth, leading to pain, infection, and psychological distress. Non-pharmacological methods like perineal massage and deep breathing techniques may help reduce such trauma. This study employed a true experimental posttest-only control group design, involving 62 primigravida women who were randomly divided into an intervention group (n=31) and a control group (n=31). Conducted in Malang Regency in July 2025, the intervention included perineal massage starting at 34 weeks of gestation, done twice a week for 10 minutes using lubricant, and deep breathing techniques during contractions and pushing. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. A significant difference was found between groups. The intervention group had a sum of ranks of 270.00, while the control group had 81.00 (p = 0.001), indicating a lower incidence of perineal trauma in the intervention group. Perineal massage combined with deep breathing techniques is a safe and effective non-pharmacological approach to reduce perineal trauma in primigravida women during childbirth.

Abstract

Background: Physical fatigue is a major challenge frequently encountered by perioperative nurses due to high workload, long working hours, emotional pressure, and a demanding environment requiring continuous concentration and physical endurance. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of progressive muscle relaxation and stretching methods used by perioperative nurses on fatigue levels and injury risk. Methods: This quasi-experimental study involved 120 perioperative nurses recruited by purposive sampling and assigned to two groups: an experimental group receiving progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) and a comparison group performing stretching exercises. Physical fatigue and injury risk were measured using the IFRC questionnaire and a researcher-developed injury risk questionnaire before and after intervention. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test with a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: The primary outcomes showed a significant reduction in physical fatigue and injury risk in both groups after intervention (p < 0.05). The PMR group demonstrated a greater decrease in fatigue levels compared to the stretching group (effect size = [insert effect size]). Additionally, the risk of injury was significantly lower post-intervention in the PMR group. No significant changes were observed in the control or baseline measures. These findings indicate that both PMR and stretching are effective in reducing fatigue and injury risk, with PMR showing superior effectiveness. Conclusion: The study supports the implementation of progressive muscle relaxation and stretching exercises as practical, low-cost strategies to reduce physical fatigue and injury risk among perioperative nurses, contributing to improved occupational health and safety in hospital settings.
