Abstract

Occupational Safety and Health (K3) is a crucial aspect of the food manufacturing industry, which carries a relatively high risk of occupational accidents. This research aims to describe the factors that cause occupational accidents among workers at Company X in Japan using the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) approach. This study employs a quantitative method with an analytical descriptive design and involves the entire working population of 74 individuals through a total sampling technique. The variables analyzed include worker status, work shifts, compliance with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), and work areas. The results show that most workers (95.5%) had never experienced an occupational accident; however, the potential risk of accidents remains. The majority of workers are classified as compliant in the use of PPE (67.6%), but all respondents (100%) are recorded as non-compliant with SOPs. Most respondents were interns (58.1%) and worked in the packaging area (62.1%), with a relatively balanced distribution of work shifts between day and night shifts. Based on the HFACS analysis, the unsafe acts factor is indicated by non-compliance with PPE use; preconditions for unsafe acts are influenced by work shifts and work areas; unsafe supervision is reflected in the weak implementation of SOPs; while organizational influences are related to the predominance of interns and organizational policies. This study concludes that the potential for occupational accidents is influenced by both worker behavior and organizational systems.

Abstract

Background: The strengthening of health behavior intentions in disaster mitigation poses an urgent challenge to be addressed. There is a need to enhance health behavior preparedness in facing disaster threats, considering that the city of Palu is located in an earthquake-prone zone and has a history of being affected by earthquakes. This research aims to study health behavior and mental health in relation to disaster vulnerability, based on a case study of Huntap in the Tondo area, Palu City, Central Sulawesi, using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) approach. Method: The type of research used is a mixed-method approach with a sequential explanatory model. Data collection utilizes questionnaires and observation sheets, supplemented by interview methods in the qualitative approach. Result: This study shows that the chi-square test results indicate a significant relationship between attitude, subjective norms, behavioral control, and mental health (<0.05) with health behavior. Meanwhile, in-depth interviews revealed barriers to health behavior, such as respondents' attitudes towards preparedness efforts and inadequate access to information and health workers. There is a pressing need for mental health interventions to improve preparedness. Moreover, there is a need for mental health interventions to improve mental health in promoting disaster preparedness efforts. Conclusion: This study concludes that mental health related to disaster vulnerability among the Huntap Tondo community is still lacking, which will impact disaster preparedness. Mental health interventions are essential to enhance preparedness and reduce disaster-related losses. Therefore, mental health interventions are needed to enhance preparedness for disasters and take action to reduce disaster losses and damage.

Abstract

Abstract

Background:Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are common occupational health problems caused by non-ergonomic postures and repetitive activities. Every year, more than 2.3 million workers die due to occupational accidents and diseases, including musculoskeletal complaints. Such conditions were also observed in a frozen Japanese Taiyaki cake industry in Indonesia, particularly among packing workers who stand for long periods and perform repetitive movements such as lifting, bending, and arranging products into packages. These activities are suspected to increase the risk of MSDs. This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints among packing workers in the frozen food industry. Method: A cross-sectional design was applied, involving 75 workers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a validated Nordic Body Map (NBM) questionnaire along with respondent characteristics. Bivariate analysis was performed using the Chi-square test. Result: The results showed a prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints of 62.7%, with the most affected body parts being the lower back (40%), shoulders (26.7%), and neck (20%). The Chi-square analysis revealed that working duration of ≥ 8 hours per day (p = 0.001) and work period > 5 years (p = 0.003) were significantly associated with MSDs, while age and gender showed no significant relationship. Conclusion: In conclusion, the prevalence of MSDs among packing workers in the frozen food industry was relatively high, with work duration and length of employment as the main contributing factors. Ergonomic interventions such as work schedule adjustment, task rotation, and active stretching programs are recommended to reduce musculoskeletal complaints.

Abstract

ANALYSIS OF TRADERS' PREPAREDNESS IN FIGHTING FIRE IN MASOMBA MARKET, PALU CITY Fire is a disaster that can cause severe losses to managers, owners, users, and the surrounding community. Traditional markets are particularly vulnerable to fire incidents, with impacts ranging from economic damage to threats to human safety. This study aimed to analyze the preparedness of traders in fire disaster management at Masomba Market, Palu City, and to provide a basis for developing preparedness programs, including education, training, and fire drills. A mixed-method design with a concurrent triangulation approach was applied, integrating qualitative and quantitative methods equally. The study was conducted at Masomba Market, Palu City, from August to September 2025. The results showed no significant relationship between knowledge and attitudes with traders’ preparedness in fire prevention. However, training and counseling were positively associated with improved preparedness. Overall, traders demonstrated sufficient knowledge, attitudes, and participation in training, as supported by interviews and probing with informants. Nonetheless, some informants provided responses that diverged from general ethical norms. The study suggests that traders should actively engage in fire preparedness training and consistently apply the acquired skills in daily practices.

Abstract

Company Z is a frozen food processing industry located in Japan that produces imagawayaki cakes, traditional Japanese cakes that have a round shape and are filled with various fillings. In the production process, workers often come into direct contact with various large-capacity machines, raw materials, and work equipment that have potential hazards from a physical, mechanical, and ergonomic perspective. Some potential hazards often found in the production environment in this food industry include slippery floors due to water or oil spills, hot molds and baking machines, hot room temperatures, and the use of sharp tools. This study aims to identify all hazards in each stage of the production process, then map them into risk levels so that appropriate controls can be provided for existing risks. This study uses a descriptive quantitative approach that applies the Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Risk Control (HIRARC) method as an analytical tool to identify potential hazards and assess the risk of work accidents in the food processing industry sector. Thus, the risk percentage results obtained are at extreme risk of 0%, high risk of 66%, medium risk of 27%, and low risk of 7%. There are also 50 risk control suggestions based on the risk control hierarchy, namely 2 elimination, 7 substitution, 12 engineering controls, 15 administrative controls, and 14 use of personal protective equipment.
