Abstract

Activities related to increasing the caregiver's ability to care for the elderly who experience daily problems related to psychological approaches and the like have never been carried out. Caregiver communication does not support effective communication and is still social communication. Supported by the results of research conducted at the Nursing Home for the Elderly, it showed that there was a difference between pre and post-test in the group that received guidance or counseling treatment on the happiness of the elderly with a significant value. The purpose of this training is to empower elderly caregivers at Nursing Home at St. Yosef, Surabaya, and identify the effectiveness of the guidance model (Guidance) by caregivers. The number of participants is 50 people. The method used is cadre training through discussions, demonstrations, competence training and competence assessment. The result of training for caregivers is an increase in knowledge based on pre-test and post-test scores. There was an increase in skills seen in four skills, namely communication in the elderly, active movement, passive movement, mobilization, and daily activity training. The advantage of this cadre training is that it can effectively improve communication with the elderly people who are cared for in the orphanage. The implication of this activity is to increase the knowledge and skills of caregivers in providing care for the elderly through effective communication with the elderly in nursing homes as an effort to improve the health of the elderly.

Abstract

Sawahan Village, Watulimo Subdistrict, Trenggalek Regency, is renowned as a durian forest tourism area. However, residents living near the river basin often complain about the odor due to the frequent presence of garbage along the river. The methods employed include introducing a chlorine diffuser device, supporting the development of the tourism village, promoting self-sufficiency, providing education on waste management through the Takakura method, and establishing a Waste Bank, healthy settlements, and a Clean and Healthy Behavior (CHB) program through Family Action Plans (FAP). The results of the community service in 2022 showed that the physical and chemical parameters of water in Sawahan Village met the required standards. However, the total coliform microbiological parameter at the source did not meet the standards as it exceeded 65 CFU/100 ml, and the Escherichia coli parameter at the source was 3 CFU/100 ml. Therefore, in the 2023 community service project, an Appropriate Technology (AT) called the chlorine diffuser. Assistance was provided for the operation and maintenance of the Clean Water Facility (CWF) by teaching the use of calcium hypochlorite through a chlorine diffuser. Through educational activities, the highest increase in knowledge among the community was related to waste sorting through the Waste Bank, with 10 individuals (20%) initially understanding waste separation, which then increased to 48 individuals (96%). The greatest improvement in community behavior regarding CHB in the FAP was observed in handwashing facilities, with 18 individuals (36%) having access to proper handwashing facilities far from pollutants, which later increased to 50 individuals (100%). Abstract

Background and purpose: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease that requires active participation of the person to perform self-care. Self-care behavior requires various drivers to perform effectively. This study aims to investigate how the basic conditioning factors (BCF) and self-care agency (SCA) improve the self-care behavior (SCB) of T2DM clients.  Methods: This is a cross-sectional study that involved 195 T2DM clients who were selected through convenience sampling from three public health centers (PHCs) in Surabaya. Questionnaires were used to gather information on basic conditioning factors (i.e. developmental status, health services, sociocultural, family support, lifestyle, and environment) and self-care agency (diet, blood sugar monitoring, physical exercise, treatment, and foot care) For self-care behavior, we adopted the American Association of Diabetes Educators variables including healthy eating, being active, monitoring, taking medications, problem-solving, healthy coping, and reducing risks. We conducted the Structural Equation Modelling Smart PLS (SEM) Version 3.0 to analyze the interaction of sub-variables of BCF and SCA that improve the SCB. Results: The development status, health status, sociocultural, family, and lifestyle indirectly (where SCA becomes the intermediate factor) influence the improvement of SCB among T2DM clients. Lifestyle and environmental factors of SCA are the sub-variables that directly improve the SCB of T2DM clients.  Conclusion: The study concludes that some sub-variables of basic conditioning factors and self-care agency are influential in improving the quality of self-care practice of T2DM sufferers. It is advised that empowering T2DM clients to perform effective self-care management requires drivers from BCF and SCA factors.

Abstract

Currently, the percentage of the elderly population in Indonesia has increased much higher than in previous years. As people age, their immune system decreases and they are more likely to be affected by diabetes mellitus. In Indonesia, diabetes mellitus currently ranks as the third most prevalent cause of mortality following cardiovascular disease. Diabetes mellitus is closely associated with blood glucose levels. People with high blood glucose levels have a tendency to be overweight or obese. The increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus in the elderly, it will have an impact on hampering the development of the country. To improve the quality and life expectancy in the elderly, preventive measures are needed to increase excess glucose levels in the body. From these problems, community service activities were conducted in the form of health checks on nutritional status and blood glucose in elderly participants. The activity took place at the Abiyoso Integrated service post Polkesbaya on May 3, 2023. From the results of the examination, it was found that most of the elderly participants who participated in the activity had excess nutritional status but had normal blood glucose in the body. From this it can be concluded that high blood glucose levels in the body are not always determined by a person's nutritional status, but also lifestyle, and diet.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that remains a public health challenge, including in Sidoarjo Regency. Adolescents play a strategic role as agents of change in stunting prevention through information dissemination and direct involvement in nutritional screening. This community service activity aims to empower adolescents through an educational and participatory approach integrated into the Swabantu Program. The activities include increasing knowledge, training on anthropometric measurement skills, and field practice with the guidance of healthcare personnel and cadres. The participants comprised 40 adolescents, health cadres, and 10 community leaders. The activities were conducted in four sessions, which included: providing material on stunting and adolescent reproductive health; training in the measurement skills of height, weight, and upper arm circumference; conducting measurements on eight toddlers; and presenting and interpreting the results. The implementation methods included interactive lectures, question and answer, group discussions, skill stations, field practice, and evaluation using pre-tests and post-tests. Learning media included educational modules, early detection identification sheets, and measuring tools such as microtoise, digital scales, and upper arm circumference tapes. The pre-test and post-test instruments were validated by experts and analyzed descriptively, with paired t-tests used to measure intervention effectiveness. The results showed an average knowledge score increase from 58.2 to 78.6 (p < 0.05), with 100% of participants performing anthropometric measurements correctly. Qualitative data were analyzed thematically through observation and discussions. Assessments of the eight toddlers showed that all had normal height, 62.5% were underweight, and 87.5% had normal upper arm circumference. Challenges during implementation included limited field practice time, variation in participant understanding, and coordination with toddler families. Nevertheless, this activity successfully enhanced adolescents' knowledge, skills, and potential as community agents in stunting prevention.
