Abstract

Vocabulary knowledge is a cornerstone of language proficiency and serves as the foundation for effective communication in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. Yet, many young learners continue to struggle with vocabulary retention when taught through conventional approaches, which are often limited to rote memorization and isolated word lists. Responding to this gap, the present study investigates the effectiveness of communicative games as an engaging instructional strategy to enhance vocabulary mastery among young EFL learners. Employing a pre-experimental design with one-group pre-test and post-test, 21 participants from Ganesha English College in Lubuklinggau were assessed through multiple-choice vocabulary tests. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, minimum mastery criteria comparison, and paired sample t-tests. The findings reveal a significant improvement in learners’ vocabulary scores after the treatment, confirming that communicative games foster not only better retention but also deeper word association in meaningful contexts. These results demonstrate that communicative games create an interactive and enjoyable learning environment, motivating learners to actively engage with new vocabulary. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on game-based language learning by highlighting communicative games as a practical and effective pedagogical tool in EFL classrooms. The implications extend to broader educational contexts, suggesting that integrating interactive game-based methods can support vocabulary acquisition, enhance communicative competence, and inform curriculum design for young learners in diverse EFL settings.

Abstract

Spoken English proficiency remains a major challenge for Indonesian university students, often constrained by limited communicative practice, speaking anxiety, and a lack of adaptive learning resources. Existing studies recognize the potential of adaptive learning for improving learner autonomy, yet little research has quantified its effectiveness when embedded in textbook design. This study aimed to develop and evaluate adaptive learning materials to strengthen both spoken English perform76ance and self-confidence among EFL students in Indonesian higher education. Using a Research and Development design with the ADDIE model as adapted by Dick and Carey, the study progressed through systematic phases of needs analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were gathered through expert validation, student and lecturer questionnaires, and pre–post performance tests across one-to-one, small group, and large group trials. Quantitative results revealed strong validation scores from experts (87.50% for content and 88.63% for media), high practicality ratings from lecturers (87.50%) and students (86.44%), and significant gains in speaking performance and confidence after implementation. The developed textbook integrated adaptive, student-centered tasks and interactive feedback mechanisms that fostered measurable improvements in both linguistic competence and affective readiness. These findings confirm the viability of adaptive learning-based materials in bridging gaps of traditional instruction. Beyond the Indonesian context, the study demonstrates how culturally responsive adaptive resources can inform EFL pedagogy more broadly, offering scalable strategies for universities seeking to enhance communication skills and learner confidence in global academic and professional arenas.

Abstract

English proficiency, particularly in speaking, remains a major challenge for university students in Indonesia due to the lack of adaptive learning resources that align with learners' individual needs and contexts. In response to this issue, this research aims to empower Indonesian university students’ spoken English skills and self-confidence by developing adaptive learning materials in the form of a communicative English textbook. This study employed Research and Development (R&D) using the ADDIE development model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) as modified by Dick & Carey. The analysis phase involved needs assessment through interviews and observations. In the design phase, the textbook structure and learning objectives were formulated. The development phase focused on producing and validating the textbook with input from experts in language, material, and instructional media. The implementation stage consisted of one-to-one trials, small group testing, and large group testing involving university students. Finally, the evaluation phase assessed the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of the developed textbook. The results of this study indicate that the textbook is valid based on expert validation, practical according to lecturers’ and students’ responses, and effective in improving students' speaking performance and confidence. In conclusion, the developed materials provide meaningful, student-centered activities that reflect real communication scenarios, fostering both linguistic competence and affective growth. This research contributes to innovative textbook development within the Indonesian higher education context.
