Abstract

This study aims to examine whether the Gospel of John 20:19-31 contains a theology of mercy. This theology is actualized in the Catholic Church’s tradition, especially in the liturgical celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday, where it uses John 20:19-31 as the third reading in the Eucharist. The passage of John 20:19-31, in fact, does not employ the word “mercy” or “love.” It narrates the appearance of the risen Jesus to the frightened disciples. Applying synchronic and diachronic approaches to the text, this article will show that John 20:19-31 contains theologically “mercy” described in the acts of Jesus Christ: His appearance, his presence, and his forgiveness. Mercy belongs to God; it depicts the character of Jesus Christ, and it was taught by Jesus for His disciples to practice. Even though in the Church Fathers’ writings and the Ecclesiastical Documents, John 20:19-31 has been related to the theme of mercy, in this article it will be observed textually to find that it richly reflects the theology of mercy.

Abstract

Abstract

This article explores the phenomenon of staurophobia, “fear of the cross”. There are negative discourses toward Christians and Christ’s cross, called staurophobia. It is related to an attitude towards Christ, either accepting Christ on the one hand, or rejecting Christ, on the other. Since the beginning of Christian history in New Testament, the cross (stauros) has been a sign of contradiction. It becomes a stumbling block to non-Christians, while for Christians, it is a sign of salvation. What is Christian’s attitude, if, on the basis of staurophobia, non-Christians develop hate speech against them? New Testament gives us glimpses of answers that people should not cause violence. Based on the historical comparative study of some New Testament theological discourses, I propose that Christians should develop a calm socio politico theological attitude toward the negative discourses aroused by outsiders. I also endorse Christians to develop a sense of humour to confront such negative discourses on the cross and crucifix, as once practiced by Francis of Assisi in his encounter with Sultan Malik al-Kamil in Damieta, Egypt

Abstract

Manusia adalah makhluk yang berada sebagai a social being.

Abstract

Many Christian writers think of Christian agape love as incompatible with Greek philosophical tradition of love, known as philia (friendship). Agape is seen as a kind of love that is non-preferential, inclusive, altruistic and without regard to self-interest, whereas philia is regarded as a kind love that is preferential, exclusive, egocentric and reciprocal in nature. Agape is thought to have eclipsed philia. Then, in the spirit of agape, justice is understood as impartiality or treating everybody equally. This essay aims to show that according to St. Thomas Aquinas Christian agape love or charity (Latin: caritas) is not only compatible with philia (Latin: amicitia) but instead can be understood as “a friendship between man and God”. As a friendship, charity incorporates essential elements of philia, such as benevolence, mutual love, and some life sharing (communicatio). Perceived as grace, charity acknowledges the presence of order (ordo caritatis), in which justice does not necessarily amount to ‘giving to each the same thing’ (i.e., impartiality), but rather ‘giving to each according to his needs’.

Abstract

This study seeks to explore how the Gospel of Luke 24:13-35 embodies a theology of synodality. The theology of synodality has become a central focus in the life of the Catholic Church today, particularly since Pope Francis highlighted its importance in the third millennium. Synodality, etymologically meaning "walking together" (synodos), is based on three main pillars: communion, participation, and mission among all Church members. In this context, the passage from Luke 24:13-35, which describes the journey to Emmaus, offers rich, profound, and relevant insights to enhance and deepen the theology of synodality. This article aims to analyze this passage using both synchronic and diachronic approaches, examining the writings of the Church Fathers, Church documents, and Church history. The results of this analysis will then be engaged in dialogue with the theology of synodality to explore its relevance and potential contributions to this theological framework.

Abstract

Abstract

Suffering is an essential part of human nature. Suffering appears in all forms, from physical, and psychological to spiritual. What causes it and what does it mean? Human history offers a variety of answers, but no single answer is satisfactory. The definitive and perfect answer can only be found in Jesus Christ, the Son of God who became human and suffered, was crucified, and died on the cross. The answer will be presented through exegetical description and theological reflection on Mrk 15:33-39 using library research methods. The crucified Jesus is depicted in real terms through terrible suffering, feelings of abandonment from God the Father, and the voluntary surrender of His life. The climax of Jesus’ suffering was expressed in His cry, “My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?” (Mrk 15:34). Quoting the prayer of the righteous suffering man in Ps 22:2, a seemingly desperate cry becomes a cry of confidence in God’s coming presence and glorification. By voluntarily entering into the greatest suffering, Jesus revealed the true meaning of suffering and became the hope for all human beings experiencing suffering in their lives. As an innocent Servant of God the Father, He willingly endured human suffering, in order to enable humans to share in His salvific suffering. By entering into the mystery of the suffering of Jesus Christ, humanity discovers the true meaning of suffering. Through the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, those who are sick and suffering are united with Jesus so that they can also obtain His liberation and glorification. Imitating Jesus’ attitude of voluntarily accepting suffering can free a person from the influence and impact of suffering itself. Inner freedom based on trust, hope, and love for God not only enables a person to endure life’s suffering patiently but also turns it into something good and useful for himself/herself and others. Saint Francis of Assisi is obvious evidence when he actually found joy in all suffering with a holy desire, namely to feel as much suffering as possible as well as the love of Christ.
