Abstract

Purpose: This study investigates the impact of application-based problems in systems of linear equations through the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model on students’ critical thinking abilities. Critical thinking is a vital 21st-century skill, yet Indonesian students often demonstrate low proficiency in this area, particularly in mathematical contexts such as linear algebra. Method: A mixed-methods design was employed, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches. The participants were 28 students from STKIP Kusuma Negara, selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests involving application problems, including chemical reaction equations and polynomial interpolation. Additionally, six students were selected for in-depth qualitative analysis based on their initial critical thinking levels. The data were analyzed using descriptive methods and N-gain calculations. Findings: Findings showed a significant improvement in students’ critical thinking skills after the intervention. The post-test average score increased to 81.93 with an N-gain score of 0.61, categorized as moderate. High-achieving students met all critical thinking indicators, while those with moderate or low abilities showed partial improvement. The use of structured learning worksheets (LKM) and real-world mathematical tasks within the PjBL framework effectively facilitated students’ ability to interpret, analyze, evaluate, and draw conclusions. Significance: This study demonstrates the potential of the PjBL model in fostering critical thinking, especially when combined with contextualized algebra problems. These findings offer practical implications for mathematics instruction, particularly in preparing future educators to promote analytical and reflective learning practices.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explore higher education students’ perspectives on the ethno-mathematics course as a means to introduce local culture and its values. The research specifically examines the ethno-mathematical concepts represented in Rumah Gadang, a traditional building in Batusangkar, West Sumatra. Method: A qualitative approach with an ethnographic design was used in this research. Data were collected from 35 students enrolled in the ethno-mathematics course at a private university through qualitative questionnaires. In addition, two cultural experts were interviewed using semi-structured interview questions. The data were analyzed using content analysis to identify key themes related to shapes, space, measurement, and arithmetic as reflected in Rumah Gadang. Findings: The results show that all students agreed on the importance of integrating ethno-mathematics in their learning. The students demonstrated increased interest and appreciation for mathematics when it was linked to cultural contexts. They recognized the relevance of mathematical concepts such as shape, space, measurement, and arithmetic in the design and philosophy of Rumah Gadang. Insights from interviews with cultural experts further confirmed that Rumah Gadang embodies mathematical reasoning that is closely connected to cultural identity and local values. Significance: The research demonstrates that ethno-mathematics courses can effectively foster cultural appreciation and help preserve local heritage among university students. This encourages students to see mathematics as not only a universal science but also a reflection of cultural traditions. The study highlights the value of using local cultural artifacts as authentic contexts in mathematics education, with implications for curriculum development that supports both academic achievement and cultural preservation.

Abstract

This article attempts to uncover and analyze the problematic legal protection for customers in the implementation of murabahah financing contracts by Islamic financial institutions in Indonesia. Although the murabahah contract is normatively one of the main instruments in the Islamic financing system based on the principles of openness and justice, empirical reality shows that there is still an imbalance in the legal relationship between customers and Islamic financial institutions. This imbalance is reflected in the application of unilateral standard clauses, disproportionate collateral execution mechanisms, and minimal transparency regarding cost components and profit margins in the financing structure. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to examine in depth the form of legal protection for customers in murabahah practices, while at the same time assessing its compliance with the principles of justice, balance, and transparency as mandated in national laws and regulations and Islamic legal principles. This study uses a normative legal approach with a descriptive analysis method that examines positive legal norms, including Law Number 21 of 2008 concerning Islamic Banking, Law Number 8 of 1999 concerning Consumer Protection, and the Fatwa of the National Sharia Council of the Indonesian Ulema Council (DSN-MUI) as a reference for substantive law. The findings indicate a legal vacuum and implementation weaknesses in the aspect of protecting customer rights, especially regarding the position of customers as the weak party in contractual relations. This article offers an update in the form of an ideal model formulation of legal protection based on integration between Islamic law and the national legal system, in order to ensure normative balance and legal certainty for all parties involved. Thus, this article is expected to provide theoretical and practical contributions in strengthening the Islamic economic legal system that is oriented towards justice and welfare. Abstract

Calculus is one of the branches of mathematics which is often deemed difficult by students, indicated by students' weak conceptual understanding and low self-efficacy in calculus-related courses. Thus, innovative learning needs to be encouraged to overcome this problem. This study compares the effectiveness of whether a conventional or peer-teaching method is better at increasing students' conceptual understanding and self-efficacy in flipped classroom teaching practices. A descriptive quantitative method was used in this study. This research was conducted in two classes in the calculus course at a teacher education program at a university in West Sumatra. The first class was taught in a Conventional Flipped Classroom (CFC) with 34 students. The second class took place in a Peer Teaching Flipped Classroom (PTFC) with 36 students. Pre-test, post-test, self-efficacy questionnaires, and field notes were used for data collection. Data analysis techniques were performed using graphs. Results indicate that students' conceptual understanding and self-efficacy by peer teaching were better in the flipped classroom than in the conventional flipped classroom. Also, students’ academic background was found to be influential to students’ conceptual understanding and self-efficacy. We reveal that the student’s previous level of achievement in a peer-teaching flipped classroom influences their conceptual understanding and self-efficacy. This study suggests that future researchers and practitioners may implement peer-teaching flipped classrooms in advanced calculus. It is recommended that the group division should also consider the students’ prior achievement level.
