Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of culture shock experienced by learners of Indonesian as a Foreign Language (BIPA) and to analyze its impact on their learning motivation. The background of this study arises from the increasing interest of international students in learning Indonesian, which simultaneously brings challenges as they enter new social, academic, and cultural environments. Culture shock becomes an inevitable phenomenon, particularly when learners encounter values, habits, and communication styles that differ significantly from those of their home countries. In this context, the process of learning a new language cannot be separated from cultural adaptation, which plays an essential role in determining the success of language acquisition. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with data collected through semi-structured interviews involving two foreign students at Universitas Trunojoyo Madura. The data were analyzed using Sugiyono’s interactive analysis model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Language barriers emerged as the most dominant factor influencing learning motivation, as they disrupted the fulfillment of basic psychological needs in Self-Determination Theory namely autonomy, competence, and relatedness. However, as the learners progressed into the recovery and adjustment phases, their motivation increased in line with improved language skills and social interaction. This study underscores the importance of cultural adaptation support in BIPA learning environments.

Abstract

This tradition functions not merely as a cultural ritual, but also embodies religious, social, and moral values deeply rooted in the daily life of the community. This study aims to examine the implementation of the Mangupa Upa tradition and to analyze its position from the perspective of Islamic law, particularly through the concept of ‘urf. This research employs a qualitative approach using field research methods. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, religious figures, and community members, as well as documentation related to the practice of Mangupa Upa. The data were analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method by linking empirical findings with Islamic legal principles and ‘urf theory. The findings indicate that the Mangupa Upa tradition in Tangga Bosi III Village remains well preserved and is regarded as a significant marker of Mandailing social identity. The tradition has undergone a process of value transformation, in which elements potentially conflicting with Islamic creed have gradually been abandoned and replaced by Islamic practices such as collective prayers, remembrance (dhikr), recitation of Surah Al-Fātiḥah, and expressions of gratitude to Allah SWT.

Abstract

The concept of the Night of Qadr (lailah al-qadr), an event immortalized and mentioned in the Qur'an, has even become part of the name of a surah in the Qur'an and has become a dream for people to be able to obtain or meet the Night of Qadr (lailah al-qadr), which is considered to have a reward exceeding a thousand months of worship. The Night of Qadr (lailah al-qadr) is interpreted and understood in an exoteric sense, referring to the process of the Qur'an's revelation, while interpretations that go beyond the literal meaning or that penetrate further to reveal the esoteric meaning of the concept are rarely found. This article attempts to analyze the meaning of the Night of Qadr in the view of Ayatullah Khumaynī, a great figure from Iran who became a revolutionary leader and a cleric who became a great leader in Iran. Using a Sufi hermeneutic framework such as tajalliyāt, qurb, and maqām, as well as a textual-thematic tafsīr method, this study examines how Khumaynī reads Q.S. Al-Qadr [97]: 1–5 not merely as a ritual explanation, but also as an ontological revelation, a tajallī of Muhammadiyah reality and maqām wilāyah. The results of this study show that, for  Khumaynī, laylah al-qadr is not only the moment when the revelation of the Qur’an was sent down, but  furthermore that night an existential experience where revelation, angels, and al-rūḥ (Jibrīl) function as channels of revelation (manifestation) closely related to the concepts of Nūr Muḥammad, maqām walī/imām, and transcendent time (a night that “transcends” chronological linearity).
