Abstract

Mud crab (Scylla spp.) aquaculture holds significant potential in supporting food security, economic growth, and ecological balance. This study aims to summarize various findings related to critical factors in mud crab farming, such as feed types, rearing systems, and stocking density, and their impact on productivity, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and economic profitability. The review highlights that trash fish feed at 15% of body weight yields optimal growth and feed efficiency due to its high protein content. Feed diversification, including stingray and janitor fish, offers promising results with reduced costs. Various rearing systems are employed, ranging from cages and earthen ponds to advanced technologies such as Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS). Small bamboo floating cages demonstrate superior outcomes in growth and survival rates (SR). Mangrove habitats significantly enhance crab growth, while silvofishery systems provide a sustainable farming alternative. Optimal stocking density, such as 4 crabs/m², balances growth and production. Additionally, Scylla serrata exhibits the best growth rate compared to other species, particularly males. Innovations like soft-shell farming technology add economic value to the product. Overall, the success of mud crab aquaculture depends on the optimal combination of feed, rearing systems, and environmental management. This review offers strategic insights for developing efficient, sustainable, and economically viable crab farming practices.

Abstract

Aquaculture is an activity that produces waste in its production. Waste in the aquatic environment is dangerous because it can cause pollution. Source of aquaculture waste come from unetaen feed, feces and excretion products. Preventing this waste can be done by implementing an environmentally friendly aquaculture sistem that is in accordance with blue economy principles in order that aquaculture can be sustainable. One sistem that can be used is implementing Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA). IMTA is a aquaculture activity that apllies an integartion sistem between several species that are reared together. The IMTA principle is the use of nutrients in one rearing with the result that does not competition between spescies. The advantages of IMTA can minimize waste and increase profits because it can harvest more than one species.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the decline in freshness of skipjack tuna stored at room temperature. Fish freshness testing was carried out using organoleptic tests such as eyes, gills, odor and texture of the fish, as well as counting the number of bacteria taken from the gills of skipjack tuna. Skipjack tuna was taken from 3 different markets in Mataram City. Observations on the fish were carried out twice, the first in the morning after the fish was taken from the market at 09.00 WITA and the second observation at 15.00 WITA. The results of the study showed that in the morning the skipjack tuna was in a condition of declining quality freshness, then during the day the quality of the skipjack tuna decreased further with a condition that was almost rotten. The results of observations of total bacteria also showed that in the morning the total bacteria had passed the predetermined threshold and during the day the number of bacteria increased until it could not be counted.

Abstract

The transgenic GloFish Tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi), engineered to express fluorescent proteins, is increasingly popular in the global ornamental aquaculture industry. However, optimized protocols for its breeding and larval rearing under tropical freshwater conditions remain underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of substrate type and larval stocking density on reproductive performance, larval survival, growth, feed utilization, and fluorescent color intensity in GloFish Tetra. A 3×3 factorial experiment was conducted at a tropical hatchery in Indonesia using three substrate types—no substrate (S0), artificial fiber mat (S1), and natural aquatic vegetation (Hydrilla verticillata, S2)—combined with three stocking densities: 15, 10, and 5 larvae per liter. Key parameters, including fecundity, fertilization rate, hatchability, survival rate (SR), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and color intensity (∆E), were measured and statistically analyzed using a two-way ANOVA. Results demonstrated that the S2-D5 treatment (natural vegetation with low density) significantly improved fecundity (330.2 ± 10.8 eggs), hatchability (82.3 ± 2.7%), SGR (4.30 ± 0.11%/day), and color intensity (∆E = 17.6 ± 1.0), while achieving the lowest FCR (1.31 ± 0.07). In contrast, high-density and substrate-free conditions (S0-D15) yielded the poorest performance across all metrics. These findings underscore the crucial role of environmental enrichment and density management in enhancing both biological and aesthetic traits in GloFish Tetra. This study presents a validated protocol for enhancing hatchery success and improving the ornamental quality of transgenic fish in tropical aquaculture systems.

Abstract

Feed stability is crucial in aquaculture to minimize nutrient loss and ensure optimal growth of cultured species. This study evaluated the effects of different binders (carboxymethyl cellulose/CMC, wheat gluten, tapioca flour, and Gracilaria sp. flour) at 3% and 5% concentrations, processed via hot and cold mixing methods, on feed stability and survival of mud crab (Scylla spp.). Conducted over 45 days, the research involved feed formulation, stability testing in seawater (30 ppt salinity), and a 30-day feeding trial in a recirculating aquaculture system. Results showed that binder type and processing method significantly influenced feed integrity, with CMC 5% + hot mixing exhibiting the highest stability (96.99% retention after 240 minutes), while tapioca 5% + hot mixing degraded fastest. All formulations met the ≥70% stability threshold after 120 minutes, confirming suitability for aquaculture. The feeding trial revealed 100% survival across all treatments, indicating that binder selection can prioritize physical stability without compromising crab health. Hot processing consistently enhanced binder performance, particularly for polysaccharide-based CMC and Gracilaria sp. flour. These findings suggest CMC 5% (hot) as the optimal binder for durable mud crab feed, whereas tapioca requires careful concentration control. The study provides practical insights for feed development, though further replicated trials under varied farming conditions are recommended to validate commercial applicability. This research contributes to sustainable aquaculture by improving feed efficiency and reducing waste in mud crab production.

Abstract

The coastal area of Lembar District, West Lombok, has great potential in cultivating marine ornamental fish such as clownfish and blue tang, but water pollution due to Lembar Port activities has caused a decline in water quality and low fish survival. This community service aims to increase the capacity of farmers in managing water quality through the application of protein skimmer technology, a tool that can remove dissolved organic particles from seawater. The activity was carried out in six stages, namely location survey, socialization, training, technology application, mentoring and evaluation, and program sustainability. The results of the activity showed that partners experienced an increase in understanding of the importance of water quality and skills in using protein skimmers. In addition, the condition of the cultivation environment became more stable and supported the growth of ornamental fish. With a participatory approach and the application of appropriate technology, this activity was able to provide a positive impact. This program is expected to be a pilot model for other coastal areas in the development of sustainable marine ornamental fish cultivation.
