Abstract

ABSTRACT Knowledge and arts of the traditionally use of medicinal plant are valuable assets of Indonesian culture, which should be documented and preserved. Simultaneously, the plant that are traditionally used for health care should be investigated, particularly regarding their chemical constituents, biological activities and their safety, as well. This study aimed to inventory of medicinal plants used by people from Kampung Adat Urug, a Sundanese traditional village. This community still practices their traditional way of life, including how to maintain health and to treat illness. This study began with an ethnobotanical survey using Participation Observatory Method (POM) and interviewing the selected traditional healers. Data analysis was carried out by calculating Use Value (UV), Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC), and Relative Importance (RI) of plant species. The study revealed 29 medicinal plants used by Kampung Urug community. Five medicinal plants (Ixora salicifolia, Scleria levis, Hippobroma longiflora; Pterocarpus indicus and Pothos junghuhnii) showed high level of UV, RFC, and RI. Those species were found to be potential in treating various neglected diseases, women health care during pregnancy, postpartum illness, and maintaining health care in general. Besides, there were four plants extracts, each from Barringtonia acutangula; Pterocarpus indicus; Selaginella cf. lana and Pothos junghuhnii which showed potent inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus. Abstract

The aging process is a natural phenomenon experienced by every individual, characterized by physical and mental changes that affect the body's functions and capabilities. The speed of the aging process can vary between individuals due to the influence of hormones and other factors. Elderly is often thought of as a disease, whereas aging is actually a natural process of decreasing the body's resistance to external and internal stimuli. During aging, the elderly experience physical, mental and psychological changes. Efforts to improve the health of older adults with chronic diseases are made through the adoption of a healthy lifestyle. This includes regular exercise programs, a healthy diet by limiting salt, fat, and cholesterol intake, quitting smoking, avoiding alcoholic beverages and caffeine, managing emotional stress, and undergoing regular monthly health check-ups. With age, older adults are at risk of various diseases, decreased body functions, imbalances, and the risk of falls. These challenges often conflict with older adults' desire to remain independent and active. The mismatch between expectations and conditions can even lead to depression. Therefore, there is a need for special attention to the health and well-being of the elderly with chronic diseases to maintain their quality of life.

Abstract

Phenolic compounds are the largest group of compounds that act as natural antioxidants in plants. One of the plants that has the potential as a natural antioxidant is Jotang (Sphagneticola trilobata). This study aims to determine whether jotang leaf extract (Sphagneticola trilobata) has phenolic content and to determine the total phenolic content in jotang leaf extract (Sphagneticola trilobata). Jotang leaves were extracted by maceration method using methanol solvent. The method of determining total phenolic content was carried out using Folin-ciocaltaeu reagent because phenolic compounds can react with Folin-Ciocalteu to form a solution that can be measured absorbance. As a standard solution, gallic acid is used which is reacted with Folin-Ciocalteau reagent to produce a yellow color indicating that it contains phenolics, after which it is added with Na₂CO₃ solution as a base atmosphere giver. The phytochemical screening of jotang leaf extract showed positive results containing flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, phenolic compounds, and triterpenoids. Determination of the wavelength of gallic acid obtained maximum 653 nm. The results showed that jotang leaf extract (Sphagneticola trilobata) has phenolic content and obtained total phenolic content of jotang leaf extract of 0.909 mg /g.

Abstract

Malnutrition can weaken the immune system, thereby increasing the risk of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. The aim of this study was to determine the risk of tuberculosis (TB) recurrence associated with the nutritional status of TB patients. This study was conducted at the Surakarta Center for Lung Health in 2017 using a case-control design. The study included 15 individuals in the control group (patients who had been cured of TB) and 15 individuals in the case group (patients who experienced TB recurrence). Inclusion criteria for this study were TB patients aged 18-65 years, both male and female, who had completed the full course of TB treatment, and who had complete data on nutritional status measured through Body Mass Index (BMI) and documented dietary intake in medical records. Patients with metabolic disorders or chronic diseases other than TB that could influence nutritional status were excluded. Data were collected from medical records and analyzed using SPSS version 25. The results showed that patients with poor nutritional status (below the normal BMI) had a significantly higher risk of TB recurrence (p = 0.028). Another finding indicated that patients who had a habit of consuming alcohol also had a higher likelihood of TB recurrence (p = 0.001). The conclusion of this study is that poor nutritional status plays a role in the occurrence of recurrent tuberculosis.

Abstract

Infections caused by Bacillus cereus and Shigella dysenteriae are serious health problems as they can lead to gastrointestinal disorders and contribute to the emergence of antibiotic resistance. One potential strategy to overcome this challenge is the discovery of new antibacterial agents derived from natural sources, such as agarwood (Aquilaria malaccensis). This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of gaharu stem extract using a Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent (NADES) composed of choline chloride and citric acid through the Ultrasound Assisted Extraction (UAE) method. The antibacterial assay was performed using the disc diffusion method with various NADES ratios (1:1, 2:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, and 4:1 g/g), with chloramphenicol as the positive control and 10% DMSO as the negative control. The results indicated that the NADES extract with a 1:4 g/g ratio produced the largest inhibition zones against Bacillus cereus and Shigella dysenteriae. Moreover, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) test showed that the 1:4 NADES extract effectively inhibited bacterial growth at a concentration of 30%. These findings suggest that gaharu stem extract prepared with NADES is a promising, eco-friendly, and potent antibacterial agent.
