Abstract

Usaha mikro, kecil dan menengah (UMKM) merupakan suatu usaha yang dilakukan oleh sekelompok pelaku ekonomi terbesar dalam perekonomian di Indonesia. UMKM mberkembang pesat karena  kegiatan dilakukan oleh siapa saja asalkan memiliki kreatifitas dan kemauan dalam menjalankannya. Namun, semenjak pandemi Covid-19 menyerang, pelaku UMKM cukup kewalahan dalam menghadapinya dikarenakan pendapatan  yang menurun dan kurangnya pemasaran terhadap produk yang dijual yang menyebabkan lemahnya daya jual, sehingga tim pengabdi melakukan kegiatan pendampingan UMKM melalui pelatihan strategi pemasaran dan product branding,dimana kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di perumahan Griya Batu Aji Asri tahap 4 RT 01/RW 18 Kelurahan Sungai Langkai Kecamatan Sagulung pada tanggal 30 dan 31 Oktober 2021, 6 dan 7 November 2021 serta 13 dan 14 November 2021. Pelatihan strategi pemasaran dan product branding yang dilakukan berdampak pada peningkatan  nilai pada produk dari mitra yang merupakan manfaat dari peningkatan mutu produk, desain, dan pemanfaatan teknologi dalam pemasaran produk mitra. Setelah melakukan kegiatan pengabdian ini, mitra kini memiliki product branding yang didesign serti logo. Disamping itu, mitra kini memiliki banner yang informatif. Dengan adanya banner tersebut, maka  pelanggan mitra akan lebih mudah mengenali produk mitra. Langkah selanjutnya yang dilakukan adalah mitra adalah menyebarluaskan informasi produk mitra di media sosial. Dengan adanya program ini diharapkan bisa memberikan peningkatan income bagi mitra dan juga sebagai contoh nyata bagi masyarakat sekitar yang pada saat ini belu tergerak hatinya untuk membuka usaha yang memiliki kemiripan jenis atau sifat dengan usaha mitra.

Abstract

Translation is the transferring meaning of the text from source language in which to equivalent text in target language that communicates similar messages by changing structure without changing meaning. The qualitative descriptive method as the research design of this study which aimed to find out translation techniques used by English third semester students in translating a narrative text entitled “Telaga Warna” from English into Indonesian and to describe the dominant technique used by the students in translating the text. The collecting of the data collected taken from the result translation of narrative text from English into Indonesian by 14 participants of English third semester students. In this study, the data analyzed based on translation techniques of Molina and Albir (2002) theory. Based on data analysis, it was found that the translation techniques of narrative text entitled “Telaga Warna” from English into Indonesian done by English third semester students of University of Riau Kepulauan uses fourteen (14) translation techniques found in 1302 data while translating the text. The translation techniques were namely literal translation, calque, reduction, amplification, discursive creation, linguistic amplification, established equivalent, particularization, transposition, linguistic compression, modulation, borrowing, variation, and generalization. The most dominant technique of translation used by students was literal translation techniques

Abstract

Hutan merupakan paru-paru bumi harus dilestarikan sehingga dapat menghasilkan energi yang bermanfaat bagi mahluk hidup yang membutuhkannya. Pembalakan liar atau dengan istilah illegal logging dapat merusak system kerja paru-paru bumi tersebut sehingga tidak berfungsi sebagaimana mestinya. Hal itu dapat mengancam keberlangsungan mahluk hidup yang ada di dalamnya, selain itu illegal logging juga merugikan Negara, dimana kekayaan alam yang terkandung didalam hutan dirusak dan dicuri oleh oknum-oknum yang tidak bertanggungjawab untuk kepentingan golongannya saja. Oleh karena itu, Negara mengatur bahwa perbuatan illegal logging merupakan salah satu tindak pidana dan harus dicegah. Hal itu terbukti dengan dikeluarkannya Undang-Undang Nomor 41 tahun 1999 tentang Kehutanan dan Instruksi Presiden No. 5 Tahun 2001 tentang Pemberantasan Penebangan Kayu illegal. Pihak Kepolisian yang merupakan lembaga Negara yang bertugas dalam menjaga keamanan masyarakat dan mempunyai wewenang penuh dalam menangani tindak pidana, mempunyai peranan penting dalam pencegahan dan penindakan illegal logging. Salah satunya adalah Kepolisian Resort Kota Barelang yang melakukan pencegahan dan penindakan illegal logging di wilayah Polresta Barelang. Sesuai dengan kewenangan Kepolisian, pihak-pihak yang terlibat dalam melakukan illegal loggingakan ditindak sesuai hukum yang berlaku, mulai dari penghentian kegiatan illegal logging, penyegelan dan penyitaan peralatan dan hasil pembalakan, penangkapan dan penahanan, penyelidikan dan penyidikan, dan diserahkan ke Kejaksaan untuk dilakukan penuntutan hingga diadili.

Abstract

Permasalahan sampah sangat banyak kita jumpai di Indonesia, mulai dari rendahnya kesadaran masyarakat dalam membuang sampah pada tempatnya sampai minimnya fasilitas tempat pembuangan sampah. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk menumbuhkan kesadaran warga untuk membuang sampah pada tempatnya, menanamkan rasa cinta kebersihan lingkungan dan penataan lingkungan yang lebih rapi dan bersih dengan pengadaan TPS (Tempat Pembuangan Sementera) dan TPA (Tempat Pembuangan Akhir) sampah di Pulau Bulang Kebam. Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilakukan dengan 3 tahap, yaitu sosialisasi, pendampingan pengadaan TPS dan pendampingan pengadaan TPA. Kegiatan sosialisai sangat disambut baik oleh warga yang dibuktikan dengan warga menerima kantong sampah yang diberikan dan menggunakan kantong sampah tersebut untuk mengumpulkan sampah anorganik yang mereka hasilkan. Pengadaan TPS dan TPA mendapat respon positif dari warga dan perangkat setempat dengan memberikan izin lokasi pendirian dan turut serta dalam pembuatan TPS dan TPA. Semua warga berperan aktif dalam mengumpulkan sampah yang berserakan dan membuang pada TPS untuk selanjutnya diantarkan ke TPA oleh seksi kebesihan untuk proses lebih lanjut. Diharapkan kegiatan ini dapat menjadi solusi dalam menjaga kebersihan pulau dan laut di sekitarnya.

Abstract

The pressing demand for work-relevant vocational English textbooks is essential for delivering effective learning materials that align with students' requirements. Appropriate textbooks can boost English language competence by enhancing students' abilities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Listening skills form the cornerstone for developing proficiency in other language areas. However, survey revealed that 92.3% of the 52 vocational schools in Batam City had not updated their English textbooks, and 96.2% lacked listening materials tailored to industrial demands. As a result, only 11.87% of the 4,035 Batam City vocational school students who passed the test showed competence in the listening component of the English assessment. This research aims to create a valid and effective vocational English textbook that improves students' English communication abilities based on workplace requirements. To accomplish this goal, the study employed a developmental research approach (Borg and Gall). The research was conducted in Batam City, encompassing 52 vocational schools, 95 English teachers, and 4,070 vocational school students in Batam City, Indonesia. The study's outcomes indicate that: 1) the vocational English listening textbook developed was empirically validated with an average score of 3.6, placing it in the highly valid category. 2) This textbook has also been empirically shown to be effective in enhancing students' listening competence, with a sig. value of 0.000, which was below 0.05. Consequently, this textbook benefits the government and stakeholders, particularly vocational English instructors in Batam City, by improving their English communication competence through the provision of textbooks relevant to industrial contexts.

Abstract

Kelelawar vampire palsu (Megaderma spasma) memiliki daerah distribusi yang luas, termasuk di pulau kecil yang jauh. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi ketersediaan lokasi roosting kelelawar M. spasma pada habitat pulau kecil. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode survey untuk menemukan ketersedian tempat roosting bagi M. spasma. Berdasarkan penelitian yang dilakukan, kelelawar M. spasma ditemukan roosting pada bangunan dapur arang yang sudah ditinggalkan. Dapur arang merupakan bangunan yang terbuat dari tanah, berbentuk setengah lingkaran, seperti gua kecil, dengan pintu masuk dan lobang kecil untuk ventilasi. Bangunan tersebut merupakan bekas dapur arang yang sudah tidak digunakan oleh masyarakat. Dari 4 dapur arang (DAR) yang ada di pulau tersebut, 3 diantaranya (DAR 1, DAR 3, dan DAR 4) dijadikan sebagai lokasi roosting oleh M. spasma dan 1 dapur arang lainnya (DAR 2) tidak menjadi lokasi roosting. Jumlah individu kelelawar terbanyak ditemukan di DAR 1 yaitu sebanyak 6 individu dan paling sedikit di DAR 4 yaitu sebanyak 1 individu. Adapun faktor faktor yang mempengaruhi pemilihan lokasi roosting oleh M. spasma pada habitat pulau kecil diantaranya adalah intensitas cahaya dan iklim, keamanan dari gangguan cuaca, keamanan dari gangguan manusia dan predator. Semua faktor tersebut sangat erat kaitannya dengan struktur lokasi roosting yang menjamin keselamatan kelelawar dari semua faktor eksternal yang mungkin akan mempengaruhi kelelawar.

Abstract

Speaking is a critical communication skill that requires real-time cognitive and metacognitive processes. Metacognitive strategies, including planning, monitoring, and evaluation, have been recognized for their role in enhancing language skills and fostering learner autonomy. Despite extensive studies on language learning strategies, their specific impact on speaking proficiency remains underexplored. This study aims to investigate the role of metacognitive strategies in improving the speaking skills of first-semester students. It also seeks to explore how these strategies can foster learner autonomy and reduce speaking-related anxiety. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving 30 first semester EFL students divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received explicit training in metacognitive strategies, while the control group followed traditional speaking practices. The results revealed significant improvements in the experimental group’s speaking proficiency, particularly in fluency, pronunciation, and vocabulary use. The experimental group also demonstrated higher levels of self-awareness and confidence compared to the control group. These outcomes substantiate the effectiveness of metacognitive strategies in enhancing speaking skills and promoting learner autonomy. This study concludes that integrating metacognitive strategies into speaking instruction benefits learners by improving speaking proficiency and reducing anxiety. Incorporating these strategies into teaching practices can support learners in achieving greater autonomy and confidence in language acquisition.

Abstract

The development of critical listening skills is essential for university students to engage effectively with complex academic content, fostering higher-order thinking and problem-solving abilities. Critical listening involves actively analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating information. This study explores the integration of cognitive and metacognitive strategies to enhance critical listening among third-semester students. Cognitive strategies focus on mental processes, while metacognitive strategies involve self-regulation and reflection. Multimedia tools, particularly short videos, offer dynamic platforms to facilitate active engagement and critical thinking. Research suggests that multimedia learning increases metacognitive awareness and deepens cognitive processing. The study further examines discovery learning's role, which emphasizes metacognitive strategies to promote autonomous learning and critical thinking. Despite growing interest in multimedia's impact on language learning, limited research addresses the integration of short videos with cognitive and metacognitive strategies for developing critical listening. This study aims to fill this gap by highlighting the potential of multimedia-supported strategies to enhance students' critical listening competence, fostering their academic success and reflective learning processes.

Abstract

The objectives of this researcher was to know the students’ problems in writing descriptive text at first grade of MAN 2 Batam in academic year 2022/2023. This research was descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, the researcher did some steps. Researchers preparing the research instrument and giving the test to the students. The data was collected on July at first grade of MAN 2 Batam in academic year 2022/2023. As the subject the researcher took of 33 students. To collect the data, the instrument of this research is test. In analyzing data of the result, the researcher used descriptive analysis. The result of this this research showed the percentage of students’ problems in aspect of organization (18%), content (17%), grammar (18%), mechanics (24%), and vocabulary (23%). Based on the result of the research, it is suggested that the first-grade students of MAN 2 Batam should be given more explanation and exercise in writing descriptive text.

Abstract

This study examines Business English acquisition patterns among employees at Pelindo, Indonesia's largest port operator, focusing on workplace communication challenges in an increasingly globalized maritime industry. Through qualitative case study methodology, the research surveyed 50 employees across various divisions using a mixed-method questionnaire combining Likert-scale assessments and open-ended responses. Results indicate high employee motivation for Business English acquisition (mean 3.50) driven by professional demands, yet reveal significant challenges in legal terminology comprehension (mean 2.95) and complex business document creation (mean 3.20). The study found that technology integration in learning processes (mean 3.80) and case-study approaches (mean 3.50) significantly enhance Business English acquisition effectiveness. These findings contribute to understanding specialized language acquisition in state-owned enterprises, particularly in maritime logistics contexts, and suggest the need for integrated learning approaches combining formal instruction with authentic business communication practice. The research implications are particularly relevant for developing targeted language training programs in international port operations contexts.
