The rapid development of the times can lead to a lack of understanding of culture. A lack of understanding of a culture can lead to a lack of understanding of the message conveyed by a work of art. Abstract

The pressing demand for work-relevant vocational English textbooks is essential for delivering effective learning materials that align with students' requirements. Appropriate textbooks can boost English language competence by enhancing students' abilities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Listening skills form the cornerstone for developing proficiency in other language areas. However, survey revealed that 92.3% of the 52 vocational schools in Batam City had not updated their English textbooks, and 96.2% lacked listening materials tailored to industrial demands. As a result, only 11.87% of the 4,035 Batam City vocational school students who passed the test showed competence in the listening component of the English assessment. This research aims to create a valid and effective vocational English textbook that improves students' English communication abilities based on workplace requirements. To accomplish this goal, the study employed a developmental research approach (Borg and Gall). The research was conducted in Batam City, encompassing 52 vocational schools, 95 English teachers, and 4,070 vocational school students in Batam City, Indonesia. The study's outcomes indicate that: 1) the vocational English listening textbook developed was empirically validated with an average score of 3.6, placing it in the highly valid category. 2) This textbook has also been empirically shown to be effective in enhancing students' listening competence, with a sig. value of 0.000, which was below 0.05. Consequently, this textbook benefits the government and stakeholders, particularly vocational English instructors in Batam City, by improving their English communication competence through the provision of textbooks relevant to industrial contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the relationship between students’ Meta-learning awareness and writing descriptive texts at the junior high school level. This research is motivated by students' difficulties in writing descriptive texts, including organizing ideas, selecting vocabulary, and applying correct grammar. The research method used is a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The population of this study consisted of all seventh-grade students at SMPN 30 Batam, and one class (N = 41) was randomly selected using a cluster random sampling technique. The research instruments consist of a questionnaire to measure Meta-learning awareness and a writing test to assess the ability to write descriptive texts based on Brown's (2003) rubric. The data was analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation test because the data was not normally distributed. The analysis results show a significant positive correlation between Meta-learning awareness and writing descriptive text (rs = 0.330; Sig. = 0.035). Although the strength of the correlation is considered weak, this finding indicates that students with higher Meta-Learning awareness tend to have better writing skills. The results of this study confirm that Meta-learning awareness can improve students' writing skills by encouraging them to be more reflective in the learning process. This research recommends that teachers integrate Meta-learning activities into writing instruction to foster students' independence, focus, and confidence in producing descriptive texts.

Abstract

Listening comprehension remains one of the most challenging yet essential skills in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. Many students struggle to process authentic spoken input due to limited exposure and lack of metacognitive regulation during listening. This study aimed to examine the relationship between Metacognitive Listening Awareness (MLA) and Listening Comprehension among Indonesian EFL high school students through podcast-based listening activities. Using a quantitative correlational design, data were collected from 72 tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 26 Batam. Two instruments were employed: the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ) and a podcast-based Listening Comprehension Test (LCT). Statistical analyses included tests of validity, reliability, descriptive statistics, normality, and correlation. Both instruments demonstrated moderate reliability (α = 0.639 for MALQ; α = 0.616 for LCT). The findings revealed no significant correlation between MLA and Listening Comprehension (ρ = –0.103, p = .390), indicating that higher awareness levels did not necessarily predict better comprehension performance. These results suggest that metacognitive awareness alone is insufficient to enhance comprehension without guided strategy instruction and reflective listening practice. The study highlights the importance of integrating metacognitive strategy instruction within authentic, podcast-based learning to foster autonomous and self-regulated EFL learners.

Abstract

This study considers the polylinguistic practices used by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in writing narratives, with particular attention to lexical and structural elements of grammar. This study also considers the multilingual context of Indonesia and aims to answer questions about how EFL learners utilize their entire linguistic repertoire in translating narratives from Indonesian into English. Using a descriptive research methodology and adopting a research paradigm that leads to generalization, this study was conducted on 13 high school students selected according to the research objectives, and the analysis was carried out on the translated versions of the narrative assignments. Findings reveal that structural polylinguism is a common phenomenon, where students develop English sentences according to grammatical logic in Indonesian. Although the structure is not native to English, it enables students to create coherence and continuity when telling a story. There is also evidence of lexical polylinguism, where students select English words according to Indonesian frameworks, despite the availability of equivalent English words. This is because students rely on meaning rather than lack of vocabulary. In conclusion, this research finds that polylanguaging in narrative writing among students is actually a strategy of meaning-making rather than an expression of grammar mistakes. The implications of these research outcomes indicate that EFL education needs to capitalize on students’ multilingual potentials not just for the development of narratives but also for lifting the anxiety of writing in academic expression.
