Abstract

Abstract

Phytoplankton is an important component in aquatic ecosystems. Apart from producing oxygen, phytoplankton also act as primary producers in the food chain. Bali Sardinella (Lemuru) is an important fishery commodity in the Bali Strait, which is known to eat plankton (Plankton Feeder), so its existence depends on the distribution of plankton. This descriptive research aims to determine the community structure, abundance and ecological index of phytoplankton in the coastal waters of Jembrana Regency. Sampling was conducted in July 2023 at five observation stations in the coastal waters of Jembrana Regency (Pengambengan Beach, Perancak Beach and Delod Berawah Beach). Around 250 litres of seawater was filtered by a plankton net measuring 35 mm. The filtered samples collected in a 100 ml collecting bottle were then transferred to a 120 ml sample bottle and preserved in 4% formalin. The samples obtained were taken to the laboratory for observation under a microscope. This research shows that 66 types of phytoplankton were found to belong to 5 classes in the waters of Jembrana, Bali. The Bacillariophyceae class were found with the highest number of species (44 species), followed by the Dinophyceae (19 species), Chlorophyceae (1 species), Cryptophyceae (1 species), and Cyanophyceae (1 species). Based on the results of calculating phytoplankton abundance, various abundance values were obtained at each observation station. Station 2 has the highest abundance of phytoplankton with 297 individuals/l followed by Station 1 (221 individuals/l), Station 4 (130 individuals/l), Station 3 (127 individuals/l), and Station 5 (36 individuals/l). The species Diversity Index (H') ranges from 2.61 - 2.83, the Dominance Index (C) ranges from 0.07 - 0.13, and the Evenness Index (e) ranges from 0.72 - 0.95. The ecological index value shows that the phytoplankton community in Jembrana coastal waters included in the moderate diversity category is not dominant and evenly distributed. The ecological index value shows that the water quality is categorized as moderately polluted.

Abstract

KMN. Bukit Safa is a fleet that uses pelagic purse seine fishing gear with one ship. One of its main catches is the shortfin scad (Decapterus macrosoma). To maintain the quality of the caught fish and prevent damage that could lower its market value, it is important to implement proper handling methods on board the ship. This research was conducted with the aim of describing the physical condition of the fish after being brought on board and determining the freshness quality of the fish after the handling process on the ship. The research was conducted from February 23 to April 5, 2024, on the KMN. Bukit Safa, which is based at the Kendari Oceanic Fishing Port. The data collection method in this study used observation, interviews, and documentation techniques. To assess the freshness of the fish, it refers to the organoleptic evaluation SNI 2729:2021 on fresh fish. The data were analyzed quantitatively with reference to SNI 2346:2015 on sensory testing guidelines for fishery products and then analyzed descriptively. The physical condition of the fish brought onto the ship during the study was intact, lightly damaged, and heavily damaged. Based on the data analysis for the quality assessment results of the flying fish, there were several fish that experienced a decline in quality but were still in a fresh condition. The freshness of the fish is influenced by the quantity of the catch, the handling techniques used on the ship, the amount of ice used during handling, and the duration of the freshness assessment after the fish handling process on the ship.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the persistence of lemuru management in the waters of the Bali Strait from social and economic perspectives. The methodology involves observations and interviews. Data utilized are based on direct observations and interviews with fishermen in the Pengambengan village. Fishermen interviewed were randomly selected and considered to represent the total lemuru catch using purse seines. Data were analyzed using Monte Carlo analysis with the RAPFISH method to determine which behaviors impact each social and economic factor. RAPFISH ordination results in the economic domain showed an index of 48,36, while in the social dimension, it had an index value of 44,48. These index results indicate that lemuru fisheries management for both economic and social dimensions is deemed less sustainable. Key words: lemuru, fisheries management, PPN Pengambengan

Abstract

Abstract

The purse seine is one of the primary fishing gears used to land pelagic species at the Nusantara Fishing Port, Prigi. The adoption of environmentally responsible fishing practices is critical to minimizing bycatch, preventing habitat degradation, and preserving pelagic fish stocks. This study assessed the operational performance of small pelagic purse seines and catch-handling practices in relation to the CCRF. Fieldwork was conducted from February to May 2025 using purposive sampling, supported by observations and interviews with purse seine fishermen, including the stages of onboard and landing-site handling. A scoring system was applied to evaluate each indicator, and gap analysis was used to identify deficiencies in the handling system on KM. Sinar Mutiara. A total of 25 fishermen and 25 community respondents were surveyed, yielding an average score (X̅) of 28.78, indicating limited compliance with sustainable fisheries resource management principles. Variation in adherence to CCRF handling standards further reinforces this finding. While post-harvest handling at the auction site showed relatively better alignment with CCRF provisions, notable gaps remain in onboard and landing-site operations. These results underscore the need for targeted improvements to enhance compliance and support the transition toward more sustainable purse seine fisheries in Prigi.
