Abstract

Japanese Caligraphy – Shodo, is a work of art that expresses the beauty of kanji characters on paper by writing using brushstrokes. The art of calligraphy is popular in Japan from elementary school children to the elderly and already widespread in the world. The tools used during shodo include shitajiki, bunchin, suzuri, sumi, and fude. At the beginning of  shodo, one must pay attention to his posture and hand to get good results. It is strongly advised so that the result can be as good as it is written with Japanese brush/fude. There are some various kinds of Japanese shodo, such as kaishou, gyousho, shousho. Usually shodo can be seen in some Japanese traditional events, such as Japanese wedding ceremony, Japanese tea ceremony room, in houses during new year, etc.

Abstract

From July to September 2024, a community service team from the Agrotechnology Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Palangka Raya, together with partners, conducted training on utilizing oyster mushroom baglog waste into multi-function fertilizer for mushroom farmers in Palangka Raya. The first partner is the Indonesian Phytopathology Association Central Kalimantan Regional Commissariat (PFI Komda Kalteng) and the second is mushroom farmers in Palangka Raya. The methods used include preparation, counseling, mentoring, and demonstrations, as well as training in Trichoderma propagation, making Trichocompost, compost packaging, and using compost as a planting media. Additionally, demonstration plots are made using Trichocompost. The mushroom farmers have succeeded in mastering the technique of making Trichocompost from oyster mushroom baglog waste. This innovation not only reduces environmental waste but also makes oyster mushroom cultivation more sustainable. Waste that is usually thrown away or only used as direct fertilizer is now processed into a multifunction fertilizer that can stimulate plant growth and increase plant resistance to disease that proven by a demonstration plot of chili cultivation using Trichokompos. This processing process not only increases the efficiency of natural resource use but also provides added value to waste and increases mushroom farmers' income.

Abstract

The DMAIC (Define, Measurement Analyze, Improve, Control) methodology of Six Sigma has been widely recognized as a breakthrough process improvement strategy for application among human resources that offers an impressive reduction in defects or errors in many business processes. Even though Six Sigma's DMAIC was predominantly applied in the manufacturing industry, recent studies have revealed that it has been implemented effectively in the service industry as well. This article aims to explore the benefits and the fundamental challenges of DMAIC implementation as a student's course project in five Indonesian service companies. An exploratory study was conducted to provide a clear understanding of DMAIC method implementation in service companies. A similar challenge, the lack of openness of the company, was found across cases. Several enhancements in company performance were identified, including improved customer satisfaction, reduction in delivery errors, and shorter waiting time. This research also highlighted the usage of some non-statistical tools and techniques that effectively contribute to each phase of the DMAIC method. Lastly, all five companies reported that these improvement projects offer positive benefits, including increased revenue and cost reduction.

Abstract

Improving environmental quality in architectural design is crucial in energy efficiency, health, and comfort, directly impacting occupant productivity. In tropical regions, high exposure to solar radiation significantly contributes to increased energy consumption in the building sector, accounting for 36% of total global energy usage. Shading devices are employed as a passive strategy to minimize solar heat gain, maintain thermal comfort, and evenly distribute natural light, reducing reliance on artificial lighting. This study analyzes the impact of different louver types on daylight optimization in shading devices, designed with the same module across various scenarios (louvers at ∠90°, ∠45°, and ∠150°). The research methodology involves computational simulations based on BIM, using Autodesk Revit for prototype modeling, parameter determination, scenario setup, and the Insight Plugin for simulating daylight illuminance (lux) and daylight factor (DF). The results show that the shading device with a 90° louver angle performs optimally in meeting the daylight illuminance standard (300–3000 lux) across various representative dates, achieving a daylight factor (DF) of 3.2%, in line with global standards. The louver angle significantly influences the overall distribution of natural light. This study's limitation is its focus on a single location (Surabaya) and its restriction to three shading device scenarios.

Abstract

Cayenne pepper cultivation training to household needs is a collaboration between the Agrotechnology study program, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Palangka Raya with the Indonesian Phytopathology Association, Regional of Central Kalimantan, which has been carried out from April to December 2024 in the city of Palangka Raya and Bukit Bamba Village. The training was in counseling and also cultivation guidance through field visits for people who received chili seeds. Eighty percent of the plants distributed grew well, where 40% of the fruit could be consumed for household needs, and the cause of the failure of the chili harvest was that the plants were stolen, there were pest and disease attacks, and lack of patience or lack of interest in caring for the plants. The average successful chili harvest production per harvest per tree per week was 39 grams. This activity not only includes the distribution of cayenne pepper seeds, but also has a positive impact on the community. From the data obtained, as many as 82.14% of chili plants grew well, while 17.86% were lost, either due to theft or pest and disease attacks. The first harvest showed that 78.26% of the harvested chilies had been used for household needs, while the remaining 21.74% were still waiting for the harvest period. In terms of production, the average harvest per tree reached 39 grams, with the lowest yield of 18 grams and the highest of 66 grams. This achievement shows the great potential of cayenne pepper cultivation in increasing food security.

Abstract

Hanjalutung Lake in Palangka Raya City holds significant potential for capture fisheries that support food security and the local economy. The diversity of native fish such as baung (Hemibagrus nemurus), lais (Kryptopterus spp.), saluang (Rasbora spp.), and sepat (Trichogaster spp.) provides the main source of income for traditional fishers. The study indicates that resource utilization remains within a safe limit (fMSY ± 274 fishing days/year), although a declining trend in Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) suggests increasing pressure on fish stocks and the lake ecosystem. From the socio-economic perspective, fishers face limited access to capital, weak institutional support, and low diversification of livelihoods, coupled with inadequate post-harvest infrastructure. Nevertheless, there are significant opportunities for development through product diversification, particularly high-value fish-based products such as shredded baung, saluang chips, and smoked lais. These products have broad market potential and could strengthen the culinary identity of the region. The recommended management strategies include strengthening ecological data as the basis for policy, enhancing fisher capacity, improving post-harvest infrastructure, and integrating fisheries with ecotourism through fish harvest festivals and traditional fishing attractions. With inclusive and evidence-based governance, Hanjalutung Lake has the potential to be developed as a sustainable hub for creative economy and ecotourism in Palangka Raya City.
