Abstract

This study aims to investigate the relationship between students’ WTC and teacher immediacy behaviors, to reveal what kind of immediacy behaviors are used in English classrooms, and to understand how students perceive teacher immediacy that affects students’ WTC. The researcher employed a QUAL-quan model or exploratory mixed methods design. The data was collected through observation, questionnaire, and interview to achieve the research objective. The sample of this study was 30 students in second grade in MAN Pangkep. The questionnaire analysis using Pearson Product Moment found that students’ WTC and TI have a positive correlation of 0.7013. And observation results showed that the teacher used various immediacy, including verbal and non-verbal behaviors. And students have a positive viewpoint on teacher immediacy affects their willingness to communicate.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the perceptions of the teachers about the use of code-mixing in teaching English. The researchers used a mixed-method triangulation research design (quantitative-qualitative). To achieve the research objectives, the data collected is the result of observation, interview, and questionnaire. The sample in this research was the teacher who taught in a third-year English class in SMP 4 Bantimurung. The results of data analysis showed that the perceptions of teachers had positive perceptions about the use of code-mixing in teaching English as evidenced by the results of observations and interviews which showed positive responses to the use of code-mixing and also supported by accurate data from a questionnaire where there was mean score 68 for teacher. The reason why a teacher had a positive perception of code mixing in teaching English is that the teacher considers that code-mixing can help teachers to make students more actively participate in taking English lessons. The use of L1 or Indonesian by the teacher can help students understand teacher instructions, subject matter, assignments, and even exams. In addition, students can also improve their vocabulary and how to pronounce new vocabulary acquired during the teaching-learning process.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to improve reading comprehension of English recount texts through predictive strategies in learning English. This study used a quantitative descriptive method. The data from this study were collected from the results of the pre-test and post-test. The subjects of this study were second grade students at the final secondary level consisting of 23 students selected using random sampling with the help of the teacher. The results of the data showed that there was an increase in post-test scores after the Prediction approach was used. This increases with an average score of understanding (32.2%) of the average score in the pre-test, which is 56.9 and the post-test is 84. This shows that the post-test understanding score is higher than the pre-test. The conclusion is predictive strategies are effective for increasing the reading comprehension of class XI students at SMA Negeri 9 Wajo. Therefore, predictive strategies to improve students' reading comprehension skills are very important and useful in the process of teaching and learning English.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out how teachers and students in one of high school in Indonesia feel about the usefulness of virtual learning system. The researcher applies a descriptive mixed methods (quantitative-qualitative) explanatory research design. To achieve the research objectives, the data collected were in the form of Likert questionnaire and interviews. The teachers and students in this study were from the third year of high school in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The questionnaire sample consisted of two teachers and sixty students, while the interview sample consisted of two teachers and eight students and was gathered using a simple random sampling procedure. Teachers' and students' perceptions of the effectiveness of online learning strategies on students' English learning accomplishment were poor, with an average score of 57 percent for teachers' perspective and 75,5 percent for students' opinion. The survey results as supporting data revealed that teacher and student perceptions on the usefulness of online learning practices on students' English learning achievement at one of high school in South Sulawesi, Indonesia were unfavorable.

Abstract

Media pembelajaran adalah komponen yang memiliki peran penting dalam menunjang keberhasilan pembelajaran. Berdasarkan observasi dan wawancara yang dilakukan tim pengabdi, guru dan siswa MA Darul Fath Bontolangkasa belum terbiasa dengan penggunaan aplikasi berbasis desain seperti Canva. Kebutuhan akan skill desain saat ini sangat penting sebab skill ini bisa mereka aplikasikan dimanapun dan untuk kebutuhan apapun. Kemudahan untuk memperbaharui atau pun mengedit desain melalui aplikasi hanya dengan menggunakan smartphone dimana saja tentunya merupakan hal yang sangat menjanjikan dan memberi kemudahan agar menjadi lebih efektif. PkM ini dilaksanakan dalam 4 tahap mulai dari tahap penyusunan materi, penyuluhan, pelatihan dan demonstrasi. Mitra baik guru dan siswa memperoleh pengetahuan mengenai penggunaan aplikasi Canva serta menunjukkan partisipasi aktif dalam pelaksanaan kegiatan ini.

The aim of this study is to find out what are the psychological barriers faced by students of SMP Negeri 8 Palopo when listening to English lessons in the online learning process. Qualitative design with analytical description was the method used by the researcher. The population was the third-grade students at SMP Negeri 8 Palopo in academic year 2022/2023. This research used simple random sampling technique. In this case, the researcher chose two classes to distribute the questionnaire and eight people were selected from the questionnaire results to be interviewed. Instrument of this research were a questionnaire and an interview. The results of data analysis shows that students' psychological barriers when listening to English lessons in the online learning process are; students' perspective on English lessons, students feel anxious, less-interest in English, lack of concentration and lack of vocabulary and conversation skills. The research results that trigger the presence of psychological barriers to learning are learning methods and local support.Keywords— Psychological Barriers, Students, Listening to English Lessons

Abstract

Young students should start receiving English instruction at a young age. Parental involvement in their children's English education is crucial. By using a variety of learning approaches, parents can help their kids learn English from a young age. This study attempts to examine the methods employed by parents to start and expose their young learners to the language. Research tools in the form of interviews with 7 parents served as the data gathering strategy for this qualitative study. Several parenting strategies for teaching their kids English are categorized in this study. By using research tools in the form of interviews with 7 parents as a method of data collecting, research was carried out qualitatively. Several parenting strategies for teaching their kids English are categorized in this study. The findings indicated that parents exposed their kids to English in a variety of ways, including vocabulary introduction, the use of a vocabulary memorizing system, engaging learning techniques, and the use of learning resourcesKeywords: English fo Young Learners; Parents’Technique.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of hybrid learning in ELT in the new normal era. The researcher applies a qualitative method. To achieve the research objectives, the researcher used an instrument namely interviews. The class of 2021 English Education students from Universitas Negeri Makassar's Faculty of Languages and Literature make up the research's population.The class of 2021 English Education students from Universitas Negeri Makassar's Faculty of Languages and Literature make up the research's population.The sample of this interview was 20 students from class E (class SL). The researcher interviewed 13 students via online and 7 students through face-to-face interviews using taken semi-structured interview technique. According to the data analysis results, most students had a positive opinion of hybrid learning in ELT. The respondents' positive statements about the approach were based on their own experiences learning through it. The result of hybrid learning was very flexible to use, efficient for learning, helpful to learn and increasing their skill technology and motivation. Negative opinions about the students' struggles with hybrid learning were also discovered, as a result of their lack of internet access and inability to comprehend the subject matter. Keywords— Students’ perception, Hybrid Learning, English Learning Teaching

Abstract

This study sought to determine how podcasts affected students’ listening comprehension in English-related classes. The study used a quantitative approach using a one-group pre-experimental pre-test-post-test design. Twenty seventh graders from SMPN 49 Makassar were included in the population and sample during the 2023–2024 academic year. This study tool uses questions to gauge students’ comprehension of spoken English. According to the data analysis for this study, the pre-test’s average score was 29.00, which was considered “poor,” and the post-test’s average score, which was 73.35 points, was still considered “poor.” Similarly, the significance of pvalue .000 is less than α (.05). According to the study, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, students at SMPN 49 Makassar in seventh grade showed improved listening comprehension after receiving repeated treatments, even though it was barely significant. It comes on the surface, the mean’s classification is still “poor”, but there is still significant difference which the mean was increased from 29 to 73 with 47.35 units gain. Students show increased enthusiasm during lessons using podcasts, progressively enhancing their listening comprehension through repeated treatments.  AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana podcast mempengaruhi pemahaman mendengarkan siswa di kelas yang berhubungan dengan bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan menggunakan desain one-group pre-experimental pre-test-post-test design. Dua puluh siswa kelas tujuh SMPN 49 Makassar dimasukkan dalam populasi dan sampel pada tahun ajaran 2023–2024. Alat belajar ini menggunakan pertanyaan untuk mengukur pemahaman siswa terhadap bahasa Inggris lisan. Berdasarkan analisis data penelitian ini, nilai rata-rata pre-test adalah 29,00 yang dianggap “buruk”, dan nilai rata-rata post-test adalah 73,35 poin, yang masih dianggap “buruk”. Demikian pula, nilai p (signifikansi) sebesar 0,000 lebih kecil dari α (0,05). Berdasarkan penelitian, hipotesis alternatif (Ha) diterima, dan hipotesis nol (H0) ditolak, siswa kelas tujuh di SMPN 49 Makassar menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman mendengarkan setelah menerima perlakuan berulang, meskipun tidak signifikan. Terlihat bahwa klasifikasi mean masih berada pada “buruk”, namun masih terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan sehingga mean meningkat dari 29 menjadi 73 dengan perolehan 47,35 satuan. Siswa mendapatkan antusiasme di kelas saat belajar melalui podcast dan mereka mulai meningkatkan pemahaman mendengarkan mereka hari demi hari dalam perawatan.
