Abstract

This research describes the phonological comparison between Indonesian and English, both the similarities and differences, as well as the implications for language teaching and learning. This research uses contrastive analysis. The result analysis shows that both Indonesian and English exhibit notable similarities and differences in their phonology, influencing language acquisition and communication for learners. While they both utilize the Latin alphabet and share identical letters, aiding in written comprehension, their phoneme systems differ. Indonesian has a simpler system with fewer vowel phonemes, whereas English presents a wider range, including long and short phonemes. Pronunciation patterns in English are more intricate, often varying based on word position, while Indonesian maintains a more straightforward approach. Additionally, English has more exceptions to spelling rules, contributing to its complexity compared to Indonesian. Differences in accent, intonation, and word stress patterns further distinguish the two languages. English speakers may exhibit distinct accents and intonation, impacting pronunciation. The differences in language structure between Indonesian and English also contribute to their phonological differences. Indonesian has a simpler structure than English, which also influences the arrangement and pronunciation of sounds in the language. Understanding these disparities is crucial for learners to navigate the nuances of each language effectively. Despite these differences, the shared phonological foundations offer significant advantages for learners, facilitating proficiency in both Indonesian and English phonology. Effective teaching of English phonology for Indonesian students involves addressing both similarities and differences between the two languages. Teachers should raise awareness of shared phonological features like the Latin alphabet and common consonants/vowels, while also focusing on unique English concepts such as long and short vowels and complex spelling patterns. Specific exercises, a structural approach, contextual learning, technology integration, drills, and relevant materials enhance phonological skills development.

Abstract

Sign language is communication using non-verbal words which are delivered without words but with body movements/body language or facial expressions. Sign language has evolved into a practical mode of communication that forms the basis of deaf communities. It is a visual-spatial language based on positional and visual elements including the shape of digits and hands, position, orientation, limb, and gestures. This signal can be seen in a small box at the corners of television newscasts. This research reviews the use of sign language as media in delivering information (news) in TV broadcasts. This research was library research. The analysis showed that news programs broadcast by television stations become one of the providers of information. The existence of sign language facilities in news programs at this time at least minimizes gaps in the right to access information among persons with deaf disabilities. Several previous studies show that sign language is media information read by the news anchor to the TV audience (viewers) with the intermediary of a sign language interpreter. Sign language plays an active role for deaf people based on three effects of mass communication which provide direct cognitive, affective, and conative effects for deaf people. There is a relationship between the influence of the use of sign language in news programs on deaf people such as attracting the attention of deaf audiences with an easy visualization. A presentation of the news is enough to meet the information needs of the deaf person by continuing to prioritize the latest information.

Abstract

Waste management in villages is becoming an increasingly important challenge to pay attention to. Communities often face problems in sorting and managing waste, which has an impact on the environment and health. To overcome this problem, community service activities through the Waste Bank concept were introduced. This activity aims to increase public awareness, especially among housewives, about the importance of waste management through waste banks and provide economic opportunities for well-managed waste. This activity was held on Saturday, 21 September 2024 in Pondok Serang Mulur Sukoharjo and involved representatives of the residents as future managers of the Waste Bank. The activity began with lectures and demonstrations regarding waste management, its impact on the environment, and the importance of waste banks so that residents were more motivated to participate. Furthermore, direct practice was carried out on how to sort waste based on type such as non-organic waste including plastic, glass, cardboard, mineral water bottles, plastic bags, and food packaging. Paper, iron, and electronic goods provide a concrete experience so that residents can apply this technique at home before taking the waste to the waste bank. After sorting, residents weigh each type of waste collected and record the price per kilo according to type, so that they understand the economic value of waste and are motivated to collect more. All types of waste are then collected into large plastic bags at the waste bank location to wait to be transported by waste vans, ensuring that management is carried out efficiently. At the end of the activity, discussions and evaluations were held to formulate follow-up plans, including regular meetings to monitor progress, so that the waste management program could be sustainable and effective. Thus, it is hoped that this activity can create a more structured waste management system, increase community participation, and provide environmental and economic benefits for the community. The response from participants in community service activities regarding waste management through waste banks was generally enthusiastic and positive. The resident felt enthusiastic about the new knowledge regarding the importance of sorting and managing waste, as well as being aware of its impact on the environment. They appreciated the hands-on practice that allowed them to learn how to sort organic and non-organic waste, and many committed to being more disciplined in waste management at home. Participants also hope that similar activities can be held regularly to continue to increase knowledge and share experiences. Several inputs were submitted regarding improving waste bank facilities and the need for further outreach regarding the economic value of waste. Overall, participants felt this activity was useful and wanted to contribute more to waste management in their community.

Abstract

This research describes the teachers' and students' perception of using Interactive Whiteboards (IWB) and explain the opportunities and challenges of using IWB in English classrooms. This research uses library research. IWBs are large interactive displays used as input devices for computers. They can be used in educational institutions combining traditional presentation benefits with cutting-edge technology. IWB technology consists of a digital board, computer, and projector, which can be linked to a personal computer for easy use. It offers various tools including graphics, word processing, database, and multimedia tools. Using IWB as an educational tool increase new knowledge, provide innovations to students, improve the quality of students’ learning, facilitate interaction between teaching teams and students, improve teaching efficiency, and reduce paper usage. IWB has been found to significantly improve students' English skills, vocabulary proficiency, engagement, and attitude. However, implementing IWBs in schools presents challenges including large costs, insufficient technical support, technical issues, lack of adequate e-materials, limited time for lesson preparation, negative attitudes, lack of consensus among decision-makers, inadequate proficiency, and inadequate teacher training. Teachers need to master this technology so they can use it effectively in teaching. It is proposed that teachers receive training on utilizing IWBs more efficiently in various classroom settings. Teaching using proper operation of IWBs is a major factor in the teachers' ability to implement it successfully in the classroom. The trained teachers possessed a comprehension of the most efficient methods for utilizing the IWBs.
