Abstract

This study explores informatics students' perceptions of the implementation of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) using a quantitative approach. Survey results presented in multiple tables highlight the critical importance of English language proficiency in the informatics field. Respondents consistently view English as essential for accessing global information and securing career opportunities in Information Technology (IT). Many students recognize that strong English proficiency enhances the promising career prospects in the informatics field. They rely on English for accessing technical literature and materials crucial to their studies, recognizing its broader role in facilitating research and international collaboration. Despite this recognition, practical engagement with English outside of formal classes is limited, although most find the existing English materials sufficient. Career readiness in terms of English proficiency varies among respondents, emphasizing the need for improved preparation for related exams and practical applications. In academic settings, English is pivotal for comprehending technical content and fostering interactions with peers and educators. However, challenges persist in understanding complex technical texts and adapting to academic writing standards in English. Recommendations from respondents include integrating more English-focused resources into curricula to better prepare students for the global demands of the IT industry. Overall, the surveys reveal a consensus on the necessity of enhancing English language skills for effective communication, academic success, and career advancement. English lecturers are encouraged to design ESP materials that are more aligned with the specific needs of informatics students.

Abstract

This study is to explore and analyse the semiotic meanings and religious dimensions embedded within Indonesian halal labels. This study employs a library research method. The semiotic interpretation of the halal logo using Roland Barthes’ model reveals the deeper cultural, religious, and ideological meanings behind its visual elements. This involves analyzing the signifier, signified, symbolic meaning, and cultural code embedded in its visual elements. More than just a regulatory mark, the halal logo serves as a powerful symbol that conveys spiritual and social significance to both Muslim and non-Muslim audiences. Even when presented as a small sticker, the halal label still functions as a meaningful signifier—it becomes a portable emblem of Islamic values, purity, and legitimacy that consumers actively seek and trust in various commercial settings. The semiotic analysis aims to uncover the deeper religious, cultural, and symbolic dimensions behind the visual elements of the halal logo. The signifiers—such as Arabic calligraphy, gunungan (mountain-like shapes) inspired by wayang, the use of purple color, and geometric balance—reflect Islamic values and national cultural identity. These elements convey signified meanings like religious legitimacy, spiritual dignity, and consumer trust. Together, they create a symbolic system representing purity, faith, and ethical consumption. The logo also reflects broader cultural codes, including Islamic law, national pride, consumer protection, and branding strategy, making it a powerful tool of communication. Moreover, halal labels hold strong religious significance—they guide Muslim consumers toward sharia-compliant products, support moral values, and act as instruments of religious identity and da’wah in everyday life and global markets. Understanding the semiotic and religious dimensions of halal labels is crucial because they not only inform purchasing decisions but also reflect deeper beliefs and cultural narratives embedded in modern society. Besides, the religious dimensions of Indonesian halal labels reflect deep-rooted Islamic values that extend beyond product certification. They ensure sharia compliance, foster consumer trust, and promote spiritual and ethical consumption. Halal labels serve as religious symbols that guide behavior, reinforce Muslim identity, and act as tools of governance and da’wah. Seen as a form of worship, halal consumption nurtures moral discipline and communal protection. These labels offer spiritual reassurance, symbolize divine blessing (barakah), and strengthen religious legitimacy. As identity markers, they help Islamize public spaces and encourage both Muslim solidarity and interfaith engagement. Ultimately, halal labels connect faith with modern commerce and support the spread of a halal lifestyle in global and local contexts.

Abstract

QuillBot is an online application to paraphrase writing, avoid plagiarism, summarize long sentences and improve grammar to be more precise and look professional. The objective of this research is to review the QuillBot as an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool system for students’ in paraphrasing and rewriting English writing both in the free and premium versions. This research applies descriptive qualitative. The data used is an English abstract article. The results show that QuillBot paraphrasing tools use several ways to paraphrase the text: 1) paraphrasing by using equations or synonyms, 2) paraphrasing by changing the form of the word, 3) paraphrasing by using active or passive sentences, and 4) paraphrasing by changing the order of words in sentences. This paraphrasing uses Standard Mode, which serves to balance changes to the text when users input them but still keeps them from changing the actual (original) meaning of the text, also making the result look more original. QuillBot is one of the paraphrasings and summarizing tools that can be used by students for rewriting any content based on a state-of-the-art AI system. This tool can be the students’ alternative which provides a solution by helping paraphrase when students do not have the idea to paraphrase English writing manually. However, a good knowledge of vocabulary and understanding of English grammar, of course, will help students or other users (s) both in using online or manual paraphrasing to be better or the best quality.

Abstract

This research explores how YouTube can be used as a source of authentic economic discourse for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) learners, particularly in the field of economics. The official BBC News website could be accessed at https://www.bbc.com/news, which provided additional economic news articles and related video content for reference. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach to examine how BBC News economic videos on YouTube can serve as authentic materials for ESP in economics. Authentic materials, such as news reports, company documents, and interviews, present language in its natural form and expose learners to real professional discourse, vocabulary, and cultural nuances often absent in textbooks. Data were collected from BBC News economic content available on its YouTube channel and official website, providing credible, up-to-date coverage of topics like inflation, trade, and cryptocurrency. Findings indicate that integrating these videos into ESP instruction bridges classroom learning with workplace communication, enabling learners to develop both language proficiency and subject knowledge. A structured pre-viewing, while-viewing, and post-viewing framework supports comprehension and application through vocabulary preparation, active listening, and interactive follow-up tasks. The analysis identified six benefits: (1) rich vocabulary in context, (2) multimodal learning through narration, visuals, and data, (3) real-world relevance, (4) enhanced listening and critical thinking, (5) cultural and professional discourse awareness, and (6) integration of language and content following CLIL principles. The diversity of economic topics ensures exposure to various professional communication styles, making BBC News economic videos a valuable tool for developing vocabulary, comprehension, analytical skills, and professional communication abilities in economics-focused ESP learners.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to describe the representation of motherly love (love a mother as the main character (Devki) to her stepdaughter (Arya) in the film Mom (2017). The author uses descriptive research which is described through the storyline in terms of dialogue and action. The analysis shows that Mother's love is represented in the form of a mother's struggle for her stepdaughter who gets sexual violence and injustice in the law. Devki, a mother wants to avenge all the criminals who have been involved in the abuse of Arya. Arya is not Devki's biological child, but she loves her very much. Devki the mother is willing to play “dirty” and hires a private detective to complete his noble mission, but Devki is not aware of another danger that threatens him. She did various ways to avenge the suffering her daughter experienced from the perpetrators. As a child, we must have often heard stories about her life suffered because of the torture of her stepmother. In this film, we see a woman as a mother with sincere affection. This film proves that not all stepchildren will end up suffering. Devki proves that she is Arya's stepmother, but her love for her daughter is not about blood relations. Although Devki did do wrong, we may have to admit it. A mother's instinct does not know the meaning of her child, adopted child, or stepchild. A person who plays the title of mother sometimes acts out of sanity for the sake of a child, but she proves that a mother will go through all her limitations to give justice and happiness to her child. Devki is willing to risk his life to give a new life to Arya. She tries to return Arya's life and smiles. Devki is an image of the strength of a mother who is full of love from a stepmother towards her stepdaughter.
Linguistic Strategies of Religious Framing in Islamic Crowdfunding Platforms Fitria, Tira Nur

Abstract

This research aims to explore how religious language and discourse strategies are employed in Indonesian Islamic crowdfunding platforms to construct persuasive religious framing. The primary focus is on how Quranic expressions, Islamic moral appeals, and religious vocabulary are integrated into online campaign content—such as websites and social media—to influence donor perceptions, build institutional trust, and inspire charitable behavior. Through this study, the goal is to gain deeper insight into how religious discourse serves as both a legitimizing force and a persuasive tool within the digital Islamic economy, particularly in shaping the Islamic identity and credibility of philanthropic platforms like Dompet Dhuafa. The qualitative analysis of Dompet Dhuafa’s crowdfunding campaign texts identifies several linguistic techniques used to frame charity as a spiritually significant and socially impactful act. These strategies include religious lexical choices rooted in Islamic jurisprudence, eschatological appeals to afterlife rewards, emotionally resonant language to foster a sense of community, and clear calls to action supported by credibility claims. Campaigns are also contextualized within the Islamic calendar to enhance relevance and urgency, while moral appeals tie giving to broader ethical goals like promoting justice and preventing social harm. These discourse patterns collectively position sedekah as not merely a donation but an expression of faith, communal solidarity, and ethical responsibility. In addition, the campaigns make effective use of Qur’anic and prophetic references to deepen their spiritual appeal and strengthen religious framing. Thematic elements such as reward multiplication, spiritual purification, and paradoxical religious logic—where giving leads to increase—are drawn from Islamic scripture and Hadith. These messages not only motivate giving through fear and hope related to the afterlife but also encourage sincere, humble, and intentional acts of charity. By incorporating prophetic authority and embedding sedekah within both personal piety and ethical commerce, Dompet Dhuafa’s linguistic strategies succeed in constructing a powerful religious narrative that connects divine accountability, social justice, and digital philanthropy in a uniquely Islamic way. The language used in Dompet Dhuafa’s crowdfunding campaign strategically blends emotional appeal, religious motivation, and institutional trust to encourage donations. It employs Islamic terms, Quranic verses, and hadiths to emphasize the spiritual benefits of charity. Through inclusive calls-to-action, moral persuasion, and cultural framing, the campaign positions giving as both a personal act of worship and a communal responsibility, reinforcing its credibility and aligning with Islamic values.
