Abstract

The implementation of island-based learning at SMP Negeri 1 Ambon aims to improve the quality of education in accordance with the local geographical and cultural characteristics. This community service develops a contextual Geography learning strategy by utilizing technology to enhance student engagement and understanding. The methods include planning, development, implementation, and evaluation through collaborative action research involving lecturers, students, teachers, and pupils. The ICARE learning model is applied alongside information and communication technology and the integration of local culture. As a result, island-based learning improves students’ understanding of the material, motivation, and engagement, while strengthening their connection with the surrounding environment. ICT-based media such as interactive digital maps and geospatial applications effectively facilitate local geographic concepts, while game-based learning adds enjoyment and student activity. However, challenges related to technological infrastructure and teacher training need to be addressed to ensure the program’s sustainability. Overall, this community service significantly contributes to strengthening the quality and relevance of Geography learning at SMP Negeri 1 Ambon in accordance with island conditions

Abstract

This community service program was implemented in the coastal area of Ambon City, which is highly vulnerable to tsunamis and coastal abrasion. It was motivated by the low level of geographical literacy and disaster awareness among high school students. The aim was to enhance spatial understanding and disaster preparedness through a participatory approach combining local mapping, simple geospatial technology, and local wisdom. The method employed a Participatory Action Research model consisting of problem identification, teacher-student training, participatory mapping, mitigation simulation, and impact evaluation. The results indicated a significant improvement in students’ ability to interpret risk maps and evacuation routes, as well as the creation of locally contextualized mitigation learning modules. This program contributes both conceptually and practically to strengthening disaster education in coastal schools and encourages replication in other regions with supportive policies and simple technologies

Abstract

The alignment of geography concepts in disaster education is an important strategy to build an Ambon City that has high preparedness in facing disaster risks. The integration of geography concepts enables a deeper understanding of geographical factors that influence risk, such as location and topography. This research uses a descriptive Qualitative Method by conducting a literature study. The results show that through disaster education that incorporates aspects of geography, communities can plan appropriate mitigation actions and design disaster-resistant infrastructure. Cross-sector collaboration between the government, private sector, community organizations, and educational institutions is the foundation in dealing with disaster risks in a holistic way. This integrated disaster education builds high awareness of risks and the environment, provides mental and physical preparedness in the face of crisis, and forms a solid foundation for a safer and more resilient future. In the face of disaster threats, integrating geography in disaster education is an important milestone in making Ambon City a city that is ready and resilient in the face of various natural challenges and crises.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between the school environment as a learning resource and students’ academic achievement in geography at SMP Negeri 15 Ambon. The empirical gap in utilizing real environments as educational media highlights the need for an ecopedagogical approach contextualized within island-based education. The purpose of this study is to identify the contribution of the learning environment to students’ academic improvement and to assess the effectiveness of experiential-based learning practices. Employing a quantitative correlational design, data were collected from 30 students and analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment test with SPSS version 22. The findings reveal a positive and significant correlation between the school environment and students’ learning outcomes (r = 0.674, p < 0.05). Empirical evidence indicates that students engaged in direct environmental interactions demonstrate enhanced conceptual understanding, motivation, and analytical competence. This study extends experiential learning and ecopedagogy theories into the Indonesian island education context.

Abstract

Current educational challenges lie not only in academic aspects but also in character development, particularly in student discipline and environmental-social awareness. This study aims to analyze the role of geography teachers in improving student discipline and awareness at SMPN 10 Kayu Putih. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, using data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, documentation, and field notes. The findings reveal that geography teachers play a vital role in shaping student behavior through contextual learning and direct experiences integrated with values of natural and social order. These integrated values encourage students to internalize discipline as a necessity, not a mere obligation. This research highlights the broader dimension of geography learning in character formation. The implication is that teachers need to be empowered through contextual and reflective training.

Abstract

This study originates from the rapid growth of modern retail in rural areas, affecting the sustainability of small kiosks in Piru Village, West Seram District, West Seram Regency. The purpose of this research is to analyze the impact of minimarket presence on kiosk income and identify local traders’ adaptation strategies. Using a quantitative descriptive approach through observation, interviews, and documentation involving 12 kiosks and 40 consumers, the results indicate a 61.9% decline in kiosk income and a shift in consumer behavior toward weekly shopping at minimarkets. Traders adapt by diversifying products and extending operational hours, though with limited effect. The study highlights the importance of local economic protection through partnerships between small enterprises and modern retail. Local governments are encouraged to establish fair retail zoning and community-based market integration to sustain socio-economic balance.
