Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the types figurative language found in English Slogan beverage advertisements, especially about the types and meanings of figurative language that contained in English Slogan. The problem discussed in this study are (1) what types of figurative language found in English Slogan of beverage advertisements, and (2) how the meaning of the figurative language that contained in English sloganof beverage advertisements. Thus, in analyzes the data the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method by using theory proposed by Kennedy (1983) and Leech (1981). As the result of this analysis the researcher found that are 4 types of figurative language in English slogan of beverage advertisements. They are: comparative 14 data or 48,28%, contradictive 9 data or 31,03%, and correlative 6 data or 20,69%. Comparative figurative language consists of Personification, Metaphor and Simile. Contradictive figurative language consists of Hyperbole, Litotes, Paradox and Irony. Correlative language consists of Metonymy, Synechdoche, Symbol, Allusion and Elipsis. For the meaning of the figurative language contained in English slogan of beverage advertisements the researcher found 2 types of meaning, such as; conceptual meaning 1 data or 20% and the connotative meaning 4 data or 80%. Abstract

Abstract Language is an important aspect of communication that is used to interact, speak, and express feelings. Expressive speech acts are typically the facets of speech acts commonly employed in communication. This study examines the significance of expressive illocutionary acts in human communication, focusing specifically on the Night School movie. This study applies a qualitative descriptive approach. In this study, the concept of expressive illocutionary acts proposed by Searle (1979) is used as a theoretical framework that guides the investigations carried out. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the various expressive illocutionary acts performed by the characters in the Night School movie. The findings reveal six types of expressive illocutionary acts: thanking, apologizing, congratulating, wishing, attitude, and greeting. Through the application of pragmatics, the study offers insights into the interpretation and understanding of the communicative events within the film, highlighting the importance of expressive illocutionary acts in conveying emotions and shaping interpersonal dynamics. This research contributes to the broader field of pragmatics and provides a framework for analyzing expressive illocutionary acts in film. Abstract

Politeness has always been one of the primary linguistics issues. The objectives of this research were centered on identifying the varieties of politeness maxims utilized by characters in the 2022 adaptation of the film "Lady Chatterley's Lover." The primary focus of this inquiry was to examine the employed politeness maxims exclusively within the dialogues among the characters. The researcher detailed and assessed both the quantity and prevalence of distinct politeness maxims within the film. For analysis, a qualitative approach was employed, drawing on Leech's (1983) theory that delineates six categories of politeness maxims. The data were gathered through observational means from the British romantic movie titled "Lady Chatterley's Lover" released in 2022. The findings of this investigation exhibit the presence of six distinct classes of applied politeness maxims throughout the movie. The study's outcomes reveal a total of 48 instances categorized as follows: 12 instances of tact maxim, 10 instances of generosity maxim, 8 instances of approbation maxim, 5 instances of modesty maxim, 7 instances of agreement maxim, and 6 instances of sympathy maxim. The highest frequency was observed in the tact maxim category, with 12 instances, signifying its predominant utilization among the characters in the movie.

Abstract

Directive speech act refers to a verbal action that aims to convince other social actors to take certain actions. This study analyzed the directive speech act especially the types and meanings that found in Disney’s movie entitled Encanto. Qualitative method was applied in conducting this research. Moreover, two theories that proposed by Yule (1996) and Leech (1981) were used in identifying the types and analyzing the meanings of directive speech act in Encanto movie. This study presented the findings regarding to the types of directive speech act such as request, orders, command, and suggestion. On the other hand, the meanings of directive speech act were consisted of social, denotative, thematic, and connotative meanings. In addition, this research also used Halliday and Hassan’s theory (1985) as supporting theory in analyzing the context of situation. The research data were collected through observation method and presented both formally and informally.

Abstract

Abstract This study examines assertive actions in digital communication on BTS's Instagram captions, exploring how these linguistic actions shape communication with fans in the dissemination of information. Assertive illocutionary acts are defined as utterances in which the speaker commits to the truth of a proposition, serving to convey facts, provide information, or describe events. This research uses Yule's (1996) and Searle's (1985) theory for a deeper analysis of the function of assertives. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods for data presentation. A total of 114 assertive actions were identified and analysed from 80 Instagram posts. The findings indicate that informing is the most dominant assertive function, with 64 instances (56.14%) identified. Descriptions accounted for 48 instances (42.10%), while 'stating' 2 instances (1.76%). This result highlights that 'Informing' is the main assertive strategy for efficiently conveying important information and updates to the global ARMY or fans of BTS through the official BTS Instagram platform. Tindakan ilokusi asertif didefinisikan sebagai ungkapan di mana pembicara berkomitmen pada kebenaran sebuah proposisi, yang berfungsi untuk menyampaikan fakta, memberikan informasi, atau menggambarkan peristiwa. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori Yule (1996) dan Searle (1985) untuk analisis yang lebih mendalam tentang fungsi asertif. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif untuk penyajian data. Sebanyak 114 tindakan asertif diidentifikasi dan dianalisis dari 80 postingan Instagram. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa fungsi asertif yang paling dominan adalah memberi informasi, dengan 64 contoh (56,14%) yang teridentifikasi. Deskripsi menyumbang 48 contoh (42,10%), sementara tipe ‘stating’ ditemukan 2 contoh (1,76%). Hasil ini menyoroti bahwa tipe ‘informing' adalah strategi asertif utama untuk menyampaikan informasi penting dan pembaruan secara efisien kepada penggemar global atau ARMY melalui platform Instagram resmi BTS.
