Abstract

Aceh, a province recognized for its high disaster risk potential, is frequently subjected to various natural calamities. The inhabitants of this region often face anxiety, uncertainty, and an overload of information during such events, necessitating a selective approach to information acquisition. This study explores this phenomenon, specifically the selective acquisition of health information amid disaster scenarios. The focus is on understanding how individuals prioritize information that they perceive as relevant and valuable, while disregarding what is deemed unimportant or unreliable. Addressing a notable gap in existing literature on health communication during disasters, this research emphasizes its critical role in enhancing disaster preparedness. Data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGD) involving 30 participants across three hazard-prone areas in Aceh: Central Aceh (landslides), North Aceh (floods), and West Aceh (earthquakes). Findings reveal that participants typically engage in passive information seeking, selectively assimilating health information that conforms to their pre-established subjective beliefs, values, and emotional states from trusted sources. The study offers insights into how individuals manage health information in crisis situations and suggests that stakeholders in disaster management devise targeted communication strategies to effectively disseminate vital health information during disasters.

Abstract

Abstract

Peukan Bada, situated near the North Sea in Aceh, was severely affected by the 2004 Aceh tsunami incident. This is the basis for the construction of the evacuation building shelter and first tsunami research center in Aceh, the Tsunami, Disaster, and Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) in Peukan Bada, 2006. Peukan Bada, one of the areas affected by the tsunami incident, is also a destination for socialization sessions about disaster orientation and mitigation for local citizens. The intended socialization has been carried out in SD Negeri 1 Peukan Bada by Syiah Kuala University students majoring in Communication Studies. The method is carried out through a participatory method that focuses on reciprocal interaction between presenters and participants. Result: This dedication demonstrates that primary students' understanding of disaster and mitigation prior to socialization remains relatively common. The students were given knowledge about disaster and fire disaster mitigation tips and also earthquakes; messages and knowledge materials were delivered in an interesting way and communicative because it was accompanied by children’s games that train students’ concentration and courage to speak. This activity is organized using the participative method, so hopefully it can be a medium of disaster introduction and mitigation tips for students in SD Negeri 1 Peukan Bada.

Abstract

In an endeavor to assist the Banda Aceh City Government in effective waste management, a group of lecturers and students from Syiah Kuala University (USK) has introduced an innovative waste management solution in the form of a digital-based waste collection and disposal application named e-tikbroh.yak. This application is designed to pick up pre-sorted waste from users, including individuals and communities, and then distribute the segregated waste to collectors and partners who have ordered or purchased it for various productive purposes. The distribution of this application to the community is considered essential as it streamlines the waste management process by promoting waste sorting and implementing the 3 R (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle) waste management concept, thereby fostering a conscious approach to waste management. Furthermore, e-tikbroh.yak creates new employment opportunities within the community, both as application couriers and by generating additional income through the collection of sorted waste. To expand its reach and accessibility, the e-tikbroh.yak application will soon be made available on the Play Store and web browsers for non-Android smartphone users in Banda Aceh City. Following its public introduction, a Users Acceptance Test (UAT) was conducted to ensure the effective and optimal functioning of the application system. This paper aims to elucidate two key aspects: 1) introducing e-tikbroh.yak to the community and partners, and 2) assessing the application's performance through the User Acceptance Test (UAT) procedure. The outcome of the UAT demonstrated that the people of Banda Aceh City found the application's operation to be smooth and user-friendly.

Abstract

Inclusive education is an implementation of the international consensus of providing education for all. Every child is given the rights as a citizen, including the right to access adequate and quality education. Inclusive education rejects dichotomies and discrimination because children are seen as having equal dignity and worth. Likewise with children with special needs such as autism, down syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and other physical, mental and neurological obstacles. Differences in treatment encourage the presence of accompanying teachers for children with special needs at every school level. This qualitative study uses a narrative descriptive approach to explore the importance of accompanying teachers in supporting learning assistance for children with special needs. Data was obtained through field observations, interviews and documentation of 4 accompanying teachers with social work laboratory backgrounds and 2 class teachers at the school. The findings were obtained in conjunction with the data analysis process by the author as the main research instrument, seeing that accompanying teachers reflect each child's profile to accommodate needs, support learning and improve children's self-development skills activities.

Abstract

Humanistic principal leadership is essential for fostering inclusive Early Childhood Education (ECE), yet remains underexplored in IndonesiaÔÇÖs inclusive schools. This study examined how principals practice humanistic leadership in two inclusive kindergartens in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, to support diverse learning environments. Using a descriptive qualitative design, data were gathered through observation, in-depth interviews with two principals, eight teachers, four parents, and document analysis at Pelita Hati and Bina Sejahtera Kindergartens. Thematic analysis followed Miles and HubermanÔÇÖs framework. Results show humanistic leadership is reflected in embracing diversity, building supportive environments, and facilitating collaboration. Principals lead through participatory decision-making, empathy, care, and promoting each childÔÇÖs potential, shaping an inclusive, humanistic school culture. The study offers insights into how humanistic leadership operates in inclusive ECE, providing a practical reference for principals and policymakers to strengthen inclusive, child-centered education.┬á

Abstract

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is widely recognized as an evidence-based intervention for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, limited research has examined how ABA practices are implemented and adapted within local cultural and educational contexts in developing countries. This study investigates the implementation of ABA-based educational treatment for children with ASD at a therapy center in Banjarmasin, Indonesia, with particular attention to its potential relevance for inclusive school practices. A qualitative descriptive design was employed. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis involving therapists, parents, and children with ASD. The analysis focused on identifying key therapeutic practices and examining how core ABA principles are operationalized within daily intervention routines. The findings indicate that therapists consistently apply several fundamental ABA principles, including structured instruction, behavioral shaping, repetition, reinforcement, and consistency. These practices contribute to improvements in children’s self-help abilities, emotional regulation, and social interaction skills. Furthermore, the therapeutic strategies demonstrate potential for adaptation in inclusive educational settings, where teachers can incorporate simplified ABA-based techniques to support behavioral and learning development among autistic students. This study contributes to the literature by providing empirical evidence on the culturally contextualized implementation of ABA in therapy services in Indonesia. The findings highlight the importance of therapist–parent collaboration and suggest that culturally adapted ABA practices can support the inclusion of children with ASD in mainstream educational environments.
