Abstract

This study examines the barriers encountered by English teachers in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum at UPT SMPN 1 Sabbang Selatan. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through observations, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that teachers face significant challenges in curriculum comprehension, resource availability, and assessment adaptation. Specifically, teachers struggle with understanding differentiated instruction, utilizing digital tools, and developing student-centered learning strategies. Additionally, limited access to teaching resources and inadequate training hinders effective curriculum execution. Classroom observations indicate that while some teachers attempt to implement innovative strategies, traditional methods remain dominant due to insufficient support. Assessment practices also vary, with some teachers effectively using structured rubrics, while others lack proper evaluation techniques. The study concludes that addressing these barriers requires targeted professional development programs, enhanced resource allocation, and institutional support to improve curriculum implementation. Future research should explore intervention strategies to overcome these barriers and optimize English language teaching under the Merdeka Curriculum framework.

Abstract

This study aims to dig deeper into how the values of local wisdom in Tana Luwu are implemented into economic activities in the Tana Luwu community. Taking place in Wotu District, East Luwu Regency, the local wisdom in the economic field studied is in the community who work as fishermen and traders there. This research uses ethnographic methods by going directly into the field and describing in real terms the economic activities that occur. The results showed that the noble values of local wisdom such as warani (brave), This is illustrated by the process of fishermen installing rompong, or coconut fronds (cicciri); Adele (fair), illustrated by the process of distribution of panjalae or fishermen, this fair nature is also held by traders without discriminating consumers; Sinunu (cooperating), seeing in the process of going to sea requires teamwork and cooperation; Malabo (generous), seen in the distribution of seafood that attaches importance to the distribution to the entire crew, this is still going on even though the distribution remains proportional; and Sisitappari (mutual trust), This is also illustrated by the process of fishermen installing rompong, or coconut fronds (cicciri). The values of local wisdom are still maintained from generation to generation and are reflected in the economic activities of the people in Tana Luwu, especially in fishermen and traders. In addition, there are also rituals such as the calculation of the moon in determining good and bad days in starting a business and carrying out economic activities. Some of the challenges found in this study are first, the high influence of changing times that enter areas that erode the values of existing local wisdom. Starting from lifestyle, technology, internet and other globalization activities. Second, the lack of desire and enthusiasm of the younger generation to learn and want to inherit economic activities that contain noble values of local wisdom. Among them is because some informants say it is no longer suitable for the needs of the times and is very traditional. Third, there is still a lack of activities to maintain the values of local wisdom by the local government. This is illustrated by the lack of activities that are able to socialize the values of local wisdom.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and evaluate Scoutlink, a barcode-based digital English book designed to support English vocabulary learning for Indonesian Scout members. The research was conducted due to the limited availability of contextual English learning resources that accommodate the needs of Scout members who increasingly participate in national and international scouting activities. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The participants were 25 active Scout members from 15 regions in Indonesia, selected through random sampling. Data were collected through needs analysis questionnaires, expert validation instruments, and product effectiveness tests. The results of the needs analysis indicate that 100% of respondents stated that the development of Scoutlink is highly necessary to support English vocabulary mastery related to scouting activities. In addition, 96% of respondents agreed that barcode-based access facilitates flexible and practical learning, while 92% expected the product to reflect scouting identity through its design. Expert validation results demonstrate that Scoutlink achieved a very high level of validity in material, design, curriculum, and language aspects. Furthermore, the effectiveness test shows that the use of Scoutlink improves users’ understanding of English vocabulary in scouting contexts, categorizing the product as highly effective. Therefore, Scoutlink is considered a valid, practical, and effective digital learning medium to support English vocabulary learning in non-formal education settings.

Abstract

This study investigates code-switching practices in an Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom through a qualitative classroom discourse analysis. Drawing on audio- and video-recorded classroom interaction, the study examines how teachers and students employ code-switching, the pedagogical functions it serves, and its implications for effective EFL teaching. The findings reveal that code-switching is systematic and predominantly teacher-initiated, occurring most frequently during instructional clarification, classroom management, and affective support. Student-initiated code-switching, although less frequent, functions primarily as an interactional repair strategy to maintain participation and negotiate meaning. Importantly, strategically timed code-switching mediates key learning processes, including comprehension facilitation, engagement regulation, and participation expansion. The study contributes empirical discourse-based evidence to ongoing debates on L1 use in EFL classrooms, challenging deficit-oriented perspectives and highlighting code-switching as a context-sensitive pedagogical resource. Implications are discussed for EFL pedagogy and teacher education in multilingual instructional settings.
