Abstract

Abstract. Melia S, Aritonang SN, Juliyarsi I, Kurnia YF, Rusdimansyah, Hernita VO. 2022. The screening of probiotic lactic acid bacteria from honey of stingless bee from West Sumatra, Indonesia and using as starter culture. Biodiversitas 23: 6379-6385. This study aimed to isolate probiotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from stingless bee honey (Galo-galo) and apply it as a starter culture. This research used stingless bee honey (Galo-galo) from west Sumatra, Indonesia. There are 6 types of honey bees, namely Tetragonula sarawakensis (TS), Tetragonula testaceitarsis (TT), Tetragonula minangkabau (MK), Tetrigona binghami (TB), Geniotrigona thoracica (TR) and Heterotrigona itama (IT). The screening of probiotics was evaluated as the LAB isolates' ability to resist acid (pH 3), bile salts (0xgall 0.5%), and antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria. Based on the probiotic selection, the TB1 isolate from Tetrigona binghami honey had an acid tolerance of 82.75%, bile salt tolerance of 94.44%, and the highest antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria with more excellent resistance than antibiotics. The identification with 16S rRNA showed that the TB1 bacterial isolate had 100% similarity with Lactobacillus plantarum SN13TFurthermore, starter culture inoculated with 6% L.plantarum SN13T met the starter culture parameters, with a pH of 4.7, titratable acidity of 1.46%, and lactic acid bacteria counts of 9.0 x 109 CFU/mL. L.plantarum SN13T is a candidate probiotic bacteria isolated from the stingless bee honey (Tetrigona binghami). This bacteria has the potential to be developed as a starter for fermented milk processing in the food industry.

Abstract

Abstract. Rusdimansyah R, Khasrad K, Jaswandi J, Rusfidra R, Aulia D. 2024. Heterotrigona itama workers bees homing ability as the basis for colony placement. Biodiversitas 25: 2478-2483. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of Heterotrigona itama worker bees to return to the nest from various test distances. This research is an observational study using the translocation method. There were 550 individuals of H. itama worker bees from 5 colonies reared for over two years. Each worker bee sample was identified with a mark in the form of water-based paint before being released at a testing distance every 100 meters until a distance where no more worker bees returned. The camera with a macro lens is installed at the entrance to the beehive to record worker bees returning to the hive. The video recording process was carried out over 90 minutes. The parameters observed included environmental temperature and humidity, the number of worker bees returning, and the time required for worker bees to return from each test distance. The data obtained were analyzed using Chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U-test. The research showed that the maximum distance that H. itama worker bees can travel to return to the nest was 1000 meters. However, the most effective return distance was more than 500 meters because although some worker bees can return from greater distances, the number of returns significantly decreases after passing 500 meters. Therefore, the ideal distance for placing a colony of H. itama is less than 500 meters from the source of bee food plants. The minimum distance to move a colony from the initial location to a new location is around 1100 meters.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to enhance the capacity of beekeepers in colony management and methods for propagating galo-galo bee colonies within the Bangun Sejahtera Indonesia (BSI) honey bee cultivation group. The background to this activity is the high rate of extinction of partner galo-galo colonies. The high rate of colony collapse has a significant impact on the economy of beekeepers, a decline in their honey production, as well as ecological consequences in the surrounding area, including a decline in pollinators. The activity was carried out through training, which began with an information session on factors that support colony survival, such as sufficient plant vegetation, anticipation of predator attacks, and optimal colony maintenance management. The main achievement of this activity was that approximately 60% of the ten trap boxes installed during training were successfully colonized by new galo-galo colonies within four weeks. This result demonstrates that the training improved beekeepers’ knowledge and skills in caring for colonies and installing trap boxes, which directly increased the number of colonies owned by beekeepers. Additionally, the success of colony acquisition through trap boxes can reduce the felling of trees where galo-galo nest in the wild, one tree for one colony.
