Abstract

The conventional composting technique of oil palm empty bunches takes several months or even a year to reach maturity because it has a high C / N ratio (64.46) and lignin polymer bond (27.60-32.50%) which hard to degrade. Using Merang Mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) as pretreatment before composting is expected to decrease lignin level and accelerate degradation of empty palm bunches. Merang Mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) is one of white rot fungus which able producing enzymes to degrade the lignin structure became simpler. The purpose of this study is determine the profil temperature in composting process of spent mushroom media by addition Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME).This study was conducted by varying the comparison of TKSJ: POME (1: 0, 2: 1, 1: 1 and 1: 2 w / w) with in vessel composting model. The results showed the temperature in this process reachs standard SNI 19-7030-2004 (28-29 oC). Keywords: Merang Mushroom, POME, C/N and Composting

Abstract

Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) is highly polluting wastewater with high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in which can caused severe pollution to the environment, typically pollution to water resources. On the other hand, POME was identified as potential source to generate renewable bioenergy through anaerobic digestion. Anaerobic processes need seeding and acclimatization so the microorganism could be adapted. The acclimatization process used circulating batch reactor with worked volume 25 L and glucose and sequential waste ratio of wastewater 50:50 and 0:100 (% V/V). This research observed degradation of soluble COD and growth of VSS. Experiment results showed microbial consortium has been able to adapt to the new environment and degrade organic matter along with increasing waste volume ratio and decreasing glucose volume ratio. Keywords: Acclimatization, circulating batch reactor, Palm Oil Mill Effluent, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Volatile Suspended Solids

Abstract

POME has high pollutants. POME is thick brown. The color of POME is associated with complex compounds derived from polymerization between the degraded products lignin and tannins, and POME has a high chemical composition and concentration of simple organic compounds. POME is a major source of water pollution because it is difficult to decompose and is dangerous for the environment. This research aims to investigate the characteristics of POME by analysis using ozonation. The results showed an decrease in COD from 58.144 mg/L to 56.181 mg/L. Keywords: POME, ozonation

Abstract

The empty fruit bunch (EFB) is a solid waste from palm oil processing with the highest percentage of 23% per ton of the fresh fruit bunch (TBS), which has not been optimally utilized from the palm oil industry. EFB have 15-30% lignin components and complex chemical composition which is difficult to be degraded. To be easily converted into a simpler element, the bunches have to be firstly degraded. The utilization of the empty bunches as a medium to the growth of paddy straw mushroom (Volvariella volvaccea) is expected to degrade the content of lignin. The mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) produces extracellular enzymes in the form of LiP and MnP in degrading lignin. This study aims to study the effect of environmental conditions on the growth of straw mushrooms (Volvariella volvacea) on lignin degradation. This study has variation of seed mushroom weight of which 250 gr, 350 gr and control. The best results show that the highest percentage of lignin declining was found in the increasing weight of 250 gr paddy straw mushroom seeds which was 61%, with the achievement of optimum environmental conditions such as temperatures in the range 27.2-30.6 0C, pH 7.0-7.36 and water content of 42-85.2%. The conclusion of this study is that the optimum environmental conditions during the growth of the mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) become an important factor in the process of lignin degradation in the waste of EFB. Keywords : EFB, Lignin, pH, Temperature, Moisture content, Degradation
