Abstract

Hyperglycemia is one of the complications of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Continuation of this situation in T2DM will lead to more serious complications such as morbidity and death. There are improvements and advances in the management of T2DM at present, but they are accompanied by an increase in medical costs. To solve these problems, an organized approach is needed to control hyperglycemia through peer support interventions which are considered to be able to reduce treatment costs. Peer support may take advantage of the ability of diabetes patients to support each other in managing their daily lives, which is very useful as a step to promote the type of daily behavioral efforts needed to prevent disease progression. This study aimed to identify the effect of peer support intervention in improving glycemic control in patients with T2DM. This study was a literature review using seven databases including PubMed, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, Clinical Key, Cochrane, Ebsco, and DOAJ. Inclusion criteria were: articles published in the last 10 years, in full text and in English version. Five studies were reviewed that met the inclusion criteria. The results of this review showed the effectiveness of peer support in improving glycemic control in diabetes patients. Peer support significantly lowered HbA1c and also led to a significant reduction in fasting blood sugar. Peer support may reduce glycosylated blood hemoglobin levels, increase knowledge regarding insulin use and increase diabetes self-management skills, especially in patients who do not have literacy skills. In conclusion, peer support can be used as a non-pharmacological therapy to improve glycemic control in patients with T2DM.

Abstract

The number of elderly people is increasing. Healthy elderly will have an impact on the success of health development. On the other hand, many elderly people suffer from hypertension and cause problems both in their health and there is an increase in dependence on productive age. This study aims to identify the determinant factors in the elderly with hypertension so that they can be indicators of hypertension prevention. This study used a quantitative descriptive research design with a cross sectional approach. The number of samples is the total elderly population in STIKes BK Palu who suffer from hypertension as many as 50 respondents. The results of this study were tested using Kendall's tau-b test. The results showed that the determinant factors that correlated with the degree of hypertension were age, occupation, marital status and level of depression. Of the four, the level of depression is the strongest correlation factor. This is closely related to adherence in taking antihypertensive drugs. Thus, there needs to be a role and contribution from both health workers and the community to improve health education and health literacy about hypertension in order to prevent an increase in blood pressure in people with hypertension.

Abstract

Background: Physiologically, DM patients' blood sugar control is affected by stress, but it can also interfere with their ability to regulate themselves in carrying out daily care. Objective: This study aims to identify and analyze available scientific evidence about the effect of Health Coaching (HC) in controlling blood sugar in type 2 DM patients. Method: This systematic review is based on the PRISMA checklist. Literature search via PuBMED, Science direct, google scholar, cochrane, and wiley. Structured research questions used the PICO electronic method (patient, intervention, comparison and outcome). Results: The number of respondents who suffered from type 2 DM was 6,169 with the longest treatment time of 3 years. There are 4 interventions found in controlling blood sugar in type 2 DM patients, namely HC using web-based coaching techniques, HC using a telephone, face-to-face HC using a smartphone, and HC using an application. cell phone called MDMA (diabetes management mobile app). Conclusion: Interventions that were found as HC techniques to control blood sugar in type 2 DM patients were Health coaching with web-based coaching techniques, HC conducted using the telephone, HC conducted face to face using a smartphone, and HC using a cellular mobile application called MDMA (application cellular diabetes management). However, several things that became the main limitations of this review of this study were the absence of a standard in determining the duration of HC interventions, so the duration of HC in each study varied and the longest duration was up to 3 years. Recommendation: Therefore, further research is needed regarding the standard of HC intervention in controlling blood sugar in diabetes mellitus patients.

Abstract

Background: The high rate of early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and teenage mothers increases the prevalence of emotional and mental disorders, depression, parenting stress, and child stunting. Parenting coaching is among the effective ways to overcome parenting stress and improve parents’ knowledge, skills, and behaviors, thereby avoiding child stunting. However, studies on parenting coaching are not widely conducted, particularly in Indonesia. Objective: This study aimed to present the current status of parenting stress among teenage mothers and assess whether parenting coaching effectively reduces parenting stress among teenage mothers. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used. The participants were randomly selected into two groups: the intervention group receiving parenting coaching intervention and the control group receiving standard education using a leaflet. Data were collected in June 2021 in Takalar Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Statistical Program for Social Science version 21 (Armonk, NY, USA) was employed for all statistical analyses. Results: The parenting coaching intervention had a significant effect on parenting stress (p <0.001), with significant positive changes in knowledge, attitude (p <0.001), behavior (p <0.001), self-efficacy (p <0.001), and maternal function (p <0.001). Additionally, a significant difference in the achievement of z-score values was observed between the intervention and control groups based on Body Weight/Age (BW/A) (p <0.001) and Body Length/Age (BL/A) (p <0.001). However, Body Weight/Body Length (BW/BL) did not show a significant difference in the achievement of z-score (p = 0.34) in the third month. Conclusion: Parenting coaching can reduce parenting stress among teenage mothers and improve their knowledge, attitudes, behavior, self-efficacy, and maternal function; hence, this intervention can be used as a reference in the nursing process to reduce parenting stress and prevent child stunting.
