Abstract

The submission of dowry in the form of land (Sompa Tanah), as practiced by the Bugis community in Bone, reflects the flexibility of local mechanisms in addressing real-world challenges based on the ideal values of tradition. This study is important in the broader discourse on dowry, which often highlights cultural legitimacy in perpetuating violence and the subordination of women. The provision of Sompa Tanah in Bugis society serves as a cultural, legal, and religious mechanism to establish legal certainty regarding rights and obligations in marital relations. This descriptive qualitative research draws on observation and interview data, which are then analyzed contextually to understand their relevance to social management within the community. The findings indicate that Sompa Tanah functions as a legal mechanism that not only regulates rights and obligations in marriage but also provides legal certainty within the marital bond. The legal security afforded to women serves as a safeguard for their rights as wives and mothers within a patriarchal society. As a legal mechanism, Sompa Tanah ensures social order and gains customary and cultural legitimacy, which strengthens the position of women in the Bugis social structure. Additionally, marriage, as a social bond, carries the risk of divorce, which is also legally acknowledged. Consequently, this paper recommends further comparative studies to explore the practice of Sompa Tanah across different regions to gain more comprehensive and in-depth knowledge.

Abstract

The presidential election in Indonesia in 2024 has raised controversy in the process and implementation of democracy. However, this context has not been comprehensively discussed in previous studies. In addition to answering the shortcomings of previous studies, this research also focuses on the question of how the forms, factors, and implications of democratic controversy on the legitimacy of presidential election results in Indonesia 2024. This research reveals three important findings related to democratic controversy in the 2024 presidential election in Indonesia. First, politicians’ and election organisers’ feeble commitment to complying with the rules of democratic elections. Second, the massive intervention of politicians and election organisers in the electoral process. Third, the controversy of democracy in the 2024 presidential election in Indonesia has long implications for citizens’ attitudes towards the legitimacy of election results. From these three contexts, it can be reflected that the democratic controversy in the 2024 Presidential Election in Indonesia not only caused democratic controversy in the electoral process and implementation, but also formed negative attitudes and perceptions of citizens towards the legitimacy of election results.

Abstract

The phenomenon of K-Pop fandom activism, which has been considered as a mere fanaticism movement, has experienced a developmental orientation towards the fulfillment of common interests. K-Pop fandom activism is able to become a movement in social media that has an impact and brings public attention in voicing social changes. This paper focuses on analyzing the trends, forms, and real implications of social movements initiated by K-Pop fandoms with a high number of masses and militants. Using qualitative research utilizing online sources, this study found that K-Pop fandom activism has enlivened issues that are not only related to their community but have referred to global issues such as social, cultural, environmental and political. This activism is able to become a catalyst on social media in the form of real action rather than slacktivism. Real action is carried out by giving donations, filling out petitions to make demonstration efforts. This activism phenomenon has implications for changes not only in the issues raised but also has implications for changes in the stigma of society towards K-Pop fandom which tends to be more positive as a driver of social change. However, this paper is limited to the use of text data as the main source which cannot provide empirical conclusions. Therefore, future research should integrate the views and experiences of those directly involved in K-Pop fandom activism so that it is possible to formulate more comprehensive conclusions.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and evaluate studies that have addressed issues of democratic failure in the last two decades, 2004-2024. In addition to using bibliometric analysis, this study also uses VOSviewer application-based software in exploring and evaluating entity patterns, themes, and developments of studies that focus on discussing democratic failure in the last two decades, 2004-2024. From exploring 1063 total documents, this study found that the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Russian Federation are the most active in publishing studies focusing on democratic failure in Democratization Journal, Journal of Democracy, Political Quarterly, and Third World Quarterly. However, these studies have not been able to intervene and respond to the structural, cultural, and even spiritual challenges that underlie the difficulty of implementing a democratic political system in the era of globalization. This study also recommends the importance of future studies to analyze the factors and implications of the failure of democracy in concept and practice on the welfare of the people in a country.

Abstract

The transformation of da'wah from offline to online is an important issue that needs to be studied in the context of the development of digital technology and changing patterns of social interaction in the modern era. While some previous studies have discussed the impact of digitalisation on religious practice, there is a gap in understanding how social media platforms such as Facebook change the dynamics of da'wah, especially in the context of recitations led by scholars such as Gus Ulil. The focus of this study is to examine how the digitalisation of da'wah affects the spiritual interactions between ulama and their followers, and how these changes affect the meaning and experience of religiosity in the digital era. This study is qualitative in nature with a focus on online recitations on Facebook, where data was collected through participatory observation, content analysis, and in-depth interviews. The data analysis process was conducted through the stages of coding, categorisation, and interpretation to understand the patterns of interaction and the impact of online dakwah. The key findings of this study show that digitalisation not only expands the reach of da'wah, but also changes the structure of religious communities to become more private and exclusive. Recommendations from this study include the development of more inclusive policies to support the sustainability of digital da'wah, as well as methodological approaches that can be used to improve the sustainability of digital da'wah.

Abstract

Abortion by children is not only an impulsive act but also a rational choice, which is crucial to explain and evaluate. However, this phenomenon has been overlooked in previous scholarly discussions. In addition, responding to the gaps in previous studies, this study aims to explain the forms, factors, and implications of abortion by children in urban areas as a rational choice. Using a qualitative descriptive approach based on case studies, this study reveals three important findings. First, the practice of abortion by children in urban areas is carried out in various ways, both medical and non-medical. Second, abortions performed by children in urban areas are often influenced by social pressures such as their partners, parents, and the community. Third, abortion among children in urban areas has long-lasting implications for their physical, mental, and social well-being. Based on these findings, this study also recommends the importance of future studies that conduct intensive interviews to reveal the motives and modes of children in having more reflective abortions.

Abstract

Preferences for 2024 leaders can be seen from the electability of leaders in the 2019 general election. This preference indicates that the prospective leaders who will emerge in the 2024 general election are a continuation of political activity in 2019. This study aims to explain the preferences of prospective leaders in the 2024 general election. Because so far there are still few studies that pay special attention to the preferences of prospective leaders in the context of futuristic elections. This research is descriptive qualitative in nature. Data collection was conducted through a process of reading 1,000 online news articles using the search keywords "2019 and 2024 general elections in Indonesia" on the Google search engine. The analysis in this study was conducted by reducing, describing, and interpreting the data thematically inductively. The findings in this study show that the preferences of prospective leaders in the 2024 general election are not much different in terms of profession or social status. This study also recommends the importance of research that analyzes the preferences of prospective leaders in the 2024 elections with a more empirical approach.

Abstract

Abstract This study presents a bibliometric analysis of political research published in Interdisciplinary Political Studies from 2017 to 2024, as indexed by Scopus. Using VOSviewer software, it maps key themes, research trends, and scholarly clusters within the journal's publications. The findings highlight the journal’s contributions to the broader field of political studies while identifying gaps in its coverage of contemporary issues. Notably, the study observes a limited focus on evolving citizen political attitudes and preferences in the context of new media. By providing a baseline assessment, this study enables Interdisciplinary Political Studies to strategically address these gaps, strengthening its position as a leading platform for innovative and impactful political research, particularly in response to the challenges and opportunities of the digital age.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and evaluate research on traditional music in Asia over the past 20 years based on a Scopus database search. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach using bibliometric analysis with VOSviewer software to examine and assess patterns, trends, and developments in studies on traditional music through Scopus-indexed publications. From an analysis of 1,872 documents in the Scopus database, the Asian-European Music Research Journal emerged as the most consistent source publishing studies on traditional music. The subject area of Social Sciences appeared most frequently and was the most commonly used category in studies on traditional music in Asia over the past two decades. However, these studies have remained to fully interpret and respond to the aesthetic and ethical transformations of traditional music in the era of globalization, which still has the potential to raise various issues related to culture, musical instruments, performance styles, and social functions. This study is significant for future research on traditional music, serving as a foundation for scholarly discussions in addressing the factors and implications of aesthetic and ethical transformations in traditional music in the globalized era.
