Abstract

Changes in land use are linked to climate change, resulting in the loss of carbon reserves due to decrease in vegetated land. Forests play crucial role in carbon storage. This research aims to determine carbon storage in the Toari Watershed, Southeast Sulawesi, in response to land use changes. The method uses GIS analysis to track changes in land use from 1991 to 2023, employing the SRTM Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for delineation. Carbon storage is calculated by multiplying the area of each land use by its respective carbon content value. The results of this research show that there have been significant land changes occurring from 1991 to 2023. Forest land is the land use with the most extensive changes, experiencing decrease in area of 7,181.20 hectares. This was also followed by increased mixed dryland farming use by 5,579.23 hectares, plantations by 1,994.28 hectares, residential land by 353.13 hectares, and open land by 640.85 hectares. From 1991 to 2023, land use changes had big impact on carbon stocks in the Toari Watershed. The largest decrease occurred in secondary dryland forests, leading to reduction of 741,530.7 tons C. Conversely, mixed agricultural land and plantations saw increases of 167,376.90 tons C and 125,639.60 tons C, respectively. Open land and residential areas also registered increases in carbon stocks. These findings highlight the influence of land use on carbon stock changes. The carbon stocks in the Toari Watershed decreased from 1,142,112.3 tons C in 1991 to 728,627.9 tons C in 2023 due to changes in land use.

Abstract

The water system or hydrological indicators determine the good and bad of a watershed’s carrying capacity. The hydrological indicators include discharge fluctuations, annual flow coefficient, sediment load, flood frequency, and water use index. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the carrying capacity of the Wanggu watershed based on hydrological indicators. The method used is the score and weight method for all hydrological indicator data in accordance with the watershed evaluation guidelines for hydrological indicators. The research data is sourced from primary data and secondary data. Primary data comes from direct observation, while secondary data comes from agencies related to this research. Data analysis using Microsoft Excel in monthly and annual data analysis by producing tables and figures. The results of this study indicate that fluctuations in discharge or the regime coefficient of the Wanggu River Basin are 96.45 which are classified as high, as well as erosion and surface runoff, namely sediment load conditions of 19.73 which are also included in the high category. While the value of the annual flow coefficient is 0.32, the average frequency of flooding every year occurs once in two years and the water use index is 0.69. The three parameters are categorized as being in the middle class. From the accumulated weights and scores of all water system indicator parameters, a value of 111.25 is included in the bad class category. So the Wanggu watershed has a poor carrying capacity value from the water management indicator.

Abstract

Based on the study, it was found that the land in the Wanggu Watershed is highly dynamic due to community activities such as agriculture, plantations, forestry, and settlement development. This can affect the performance and carrying capacity of the land in the watershed. The purpose of study was to evaluate the performance of watershed management and analyze the land-carrying capacity based on indicators of land. The parameters analyzed were the percentage of critical land area, the percentage of vegetation cover, and the erosion index. To obtain the data needed for the study, both primary and secondary data were used. Primary data was obtained through the overlay of the base map to obtain a map of critical land, making land cover maps, and calculating erosion prediction and carrying capacity analysis of the Wanggu Watershed. Secondary data was obtained from related agencies in the form of critical land data, land cover data, literature, policy documents, and study reports that are relevant to watershed management performance. The results of the study showed that the percentage of critical and somewhat critical land area in the Wanggu Watershed is 16.07 percent, which means that this value still qualifies as high category critical land recovery. The percentage of vegetation cover, especially forest cover, is 27.10 percent, which is still in bad condition. The average erosion index value is 2.00, which is high. Based on these three parameters of land condition indicators in the Wanggu Watershed, the performance of watershed management has a poor land carrying capacity category with a value of 50. Overall, the study highlights the need for better management and conservation of the land in the Wanggu Watershed to improve its performance and carrying capacity.
