Abstract

This paper investigates the prospects of Indonesian Salafi movements transforming into formal political parties by applying Lucardie’s (2000) framework of political project, resource mobilization, and political opportunity structures. While Salafi political participation in contexts such as Egypt, Tunisia, and Malaysia has been widely studied, systematic application of this framework to Indonesia remains limited. This study addresses that gap by employing a qualitative design based on seven elite interviews conducted in 2018 and extensive secondary literature. The analysis identifies two main factions: Traditional Salafis and Salafi Reformers. Findings show that Traditional Salafis articulate a clearer political project, primarily defensive and oriented toward protecting da‘wa spaces, yet lack the institutional resources and cultural legitimacy required for effective party formation. By contrast, Reformist-oriented groups such as Muhammadiyah, Persis, and Al-Irsyad possess robust organizational infrastructures and nationwide networks but consistently reject transformation into political parties, preferring to channel influence indirectly through education, civic engagement, and individual cadres. A paradox therefore emerges: factions with stronger political ambitions lack the capacity to mobilize, while those with resources deliberately avoid party politics. Although digital platforms and hijrah youth networks have expanded Salafi symbolic capital, these remain insufficient to overcome entrenched barriers in Indonesia’s political culture, which is dominated by moderate Islam and stigmatizes Salafi labels. Theoretically, this study contributes by extending Lucardie’s framework through the inclusion of digital mobilization and cultural legitimacy as decisive factors. Practically, it suggests that inclusive democratic spaces for non-violent Islamist actors may mitigate radicalization risks while strengthening pluralism.

Abstract

This study examines how Salafi religiosity is transformed and negotiated among university students at Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI), South Sumatra, within a pluralistic academic environment and an expanding digital ecosystem. Employing a qualitative ethnographic approach combined with digital observation, the research explores how students interpret manhaj salaf and enact piety in everyday campus life. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews with students, lecturers, and alumni, as well as analysis of Islamic content circulated on Instagram and Telegram. The findings reveal that Salafi piety at UNSRI functions both as a moral discipline and a social boundary, manifested through selective knowledge practices, modest dress, and gender segregation. Digital platforms play a central role in mediating religious authority, enabling students to reproduce scriptural norms through visual and networked forms of da’wah. At the same time, digital engagement tends to reinforce ideological homogeneity and promote Arabized aesthetics as markers of religious authenticity. Although Salafi students generally maintain apolitical orientations, their presence subtly shapes moral norms and everyday conduct on campus. The study contributes to discussions on digital religion and mediated orthodoxy by demonstrating how Salafi communities adapt purist ideals to modern institutional and technological contexts. Practically, the findings highlight the need for inclusive university policies that accommodate conservative piety while sustaining civic pluralism.

Abstract

Abstract:  This community service programme aims to produce a blueprint for a culture- and environment-based digital madrasah model as a strategic guideline for the development of sustainable digital education at MAN 4 Tanah Datar. The community service method uses a participatory qualitative approach with an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) framework, which emphasises the exploration and optimisation of local assets and potential as the basis for the madrasah's digital transformation. This approach was chosen to ensure that the development process did not start from a perspective of deficiency, but rather from the social, cultural, and environmental strengths that the madrasah community already possessed. The ABCD stages include defining, discovering, dreaming, asset mapping, linking and mobilising assets, and monitoring, which were carried out collaboratively with teachers, madrasah leaders, students, and community leaders. Data collection is carried out through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), and documentation studies to gain a comprehensive understanding of the conditions, potential, and challenges of madrasah digitalisation. The entire process is reinforced by the Logical Framework Approach (LFA) to develop systematic, measurable, and sustainable programme planning. The combination of ABCD and LFA enables the development of a contextual, participatory blueprint for digital madrasahs that is in line with cultural values and environmental concerns.

Abstract

Abstract

The digital transformation of madrasahs has become imperative in the current digital era to address the evolving challenges of educational relevance. The digitalization process in madrasahs, particularly at MAN 3 Tanah Datar, encounters several obstacles, including limitations in infrastructure and human resources. Through the Science and Technology Literacy initiative spearheaded by the Faculty of Science and Technology at UIN Imam Bonjol Padang, this community service activity aims to strengthen technology literacy among teachers at MAN 3 Tanah Datar. The initiative includes training on the use of digital media creation and assessment applications, such as Canva, Quizizz, and Wordwall. The methodology employed encompasses three phases: pre-implementation, implementation, and post-implementation. The outcomes indicate that the training successfully enhanced teachers' technological skills, which in turn contributed to creativity and innovation in teaching and learning processes. Monitoring and evaluation activities showed that the use of Canva, Wordwall, and Quizizz at MAN 3 Tanah Datar increased student engagement and motivation, but there is still a need for media adaptation to accommodate a variety of learning styles. Continued efforts in digitalization are necessary to realize the full potential of a digital madrasah. Technology-based training programs like these are expected to bolster the madrasah's human resources, equipping them to meet global challenges in the digital age.
