Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out as well as identify the acronym and abbreviations in IJAL Journal, Vol. 7 no. 3 and Vol 8 no. 1. This research used qualitative research design. The data in this research were 50 articles taken from IJAL Journal Vol. 7 No. 3 and Vol. 8 No. 1. It was found 35 of acronyms and 131 abbreviations. The findings of the acronyms did not happen any other types but the abbreviations did. There are 109 initialism abbreviations and 26 shortening abbreviations. It was considered that an acronym and abbreviation are similar but also has differences. Abbreviations are not pronounced like a word, yet they are spelled like pronouncing a letter. The function of acronym and abbreviation used in article are to minimize the space which was provided to explain the paper to the readers, also, for the same sentences are not allowed to be repeated in writing an article. Therefore, at the end of this research, it is suggested to the English learners, they should pay attention about the kinds of acronym and abbreviations, especially for them who want to learn about word formation.

Abstract

Abstract. With skyrocketing development of online learning due to the Covid-19 outbreak, pronunciation classroom is one of the evidences that was quite affected by this pandemic situation. The controversial mindset, that this lesson needs literally face-to-face practices since they relate to organ speech's output, leads the authors into this investigation. This paper was aimed at finding out students' response toward the implementation of blended learning in pronunciation classrooms. The research design was descriptive quantitative with the population of 176 fourth semester students of English Education Department of Universitas PGRI Semarang in the academic year of 2019/2020, and 28 students coming from 4A to 4D were taken as the sample. The data were collected online through Google Form using a perception questionnaire and confirmed by phone call interview preceded by classroom observation. The data from the questionnaire were then analyzed quantitatively to determine the level of students' perception supported by descriptive data from the interviews. The results indicated that students' perception toward blended learning in the Pronunciation classroom was in the level of intermediate. Additionally, the interview revealed that the students were satisfied with blended learning implementation in Pronunciation classroom. They preferred online classes which were balanced in terms of assignment-giving and learning material. Too many assignments with fewer materials only burden the students. Therefore, the lecturers were suggested to consider their ability in handling the class, which also interests students in engaging the online classes more.Keywords: blended learning; pronunciation, higher education, students' perceptionAbstrak. Pesatnya perkembangan pembelajaran online akibat dari wabah Covid, kelas pronunciation sebagai salah satu bukti yang cukup terpengaruh oleh situasi pandemi ini. Pola pikir kontroversi, bahwa pelajaran pronunciation benar-benar membutuhkan praktik tatap muka karena berkaitan dengan luaran speech organs, sehingga mengarahkan peneliti ke permasalahan ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui respons mahasiswa terhadap penerapan blended learning di kelas pronunciation. Desain penelitian adalah deskriptif kuantitatif dengan populasi 176 mahasiswa semester IV Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas PGRI Semarang tahun ajaran 2019/2020 dan diambil sampel 28 mahasiswa dari 4A sampai 4D. Pengumpulan data dilakukan secara online melalui google form menggunakan kuesioner persepsi dan dikonfirmasi dengan wawancara melalui telepon yang didahului dengan observasi kelas. Data dari kuesioner dianalisis secara kuantitatf didukung oleh data interview yang dianalisis secara deskriptif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa persepsi mahasiswa terhadap blended learning di kelas pronunciation berada pada level intermediate. Selain itu, hasil wawancara menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa merasa puas dengan penerapan blended learning di kelas pronunciation. Mereka lebih menyukai kelas online yang seimbang dalam hal pemberian tugas dan materi pembelajaran. Terlalu banyak tugas dengan materi yang lebih sedikit hanya akan membebani mahasiswa. Oleh karena itu, para dosen disarankan untuk mempertimbangkan kemampuannya dalam menangani perkuliahan yang juga menarik minat mahasiswa untuk lebih banyak terlibat dalam kelas online.   Kata kunci: blended learning; pronunciation, pendidikan tinggi, persepsi mahasiswa

Abstract

As the fast development of technology in this globalization era, people become more attracted to social media. In using social media itself, we still need politeness just like the oral communication. This study aimed at analyzing the politeness strategies used in Ber-english Ria ‘Line’ group chat. The study described the politeness strategies used in Ber-english Ria line grup chat and the application among those strategies. The study was analyzed descriptively based on related politeness strategies classification of Brown and Levinson citied in Athenia Barouni (2013). The data were analyzed and grouped into the classification. The result showed that the group chat members mostly used positive politeness followed by negative politeness, off record strategy, and the least used is bald on record strategy. It showed that the group chat members’ politeness was in the middle of very polite and straightforward. In the end, the most applicable politeness strategy used in Ber-english Ria ‘Line’ group chat was positive politeness strategy. The result of this study showed how important the politeness even in written communication. It can be used in using social media to lessen the misunderstanding.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the effectiveness of Content-Based Instruction method in teaching reading for second grade of SMAN 1 Donorojo Jepara and to find out the reading comprehension ability of the second grade of SMAN 1 Donorojo Jepara. The population of this study was from the second grade MIPA which consists of 143 students from 4 classes. The samples of this study were class XI MIPA 2 as control group and class XI MIPA 4 as experimental group. The samples were selected by random sampling technique. The instruments used in this study were reading pre-test and post-test. The data were collected from observation and reading comprehension tests. The data were analyzed statistically in the form of t-test. To find out the significant improvement, the researchers conducted t-test using Paired Sample t-test, it showed that the sig. (2-tailed) of experiment is 0.00 and control group is 0.02. 0.000 < 0.05 and 0.02 < 0.05. There is a significance difference in the result of students' learning scores between the experiment and control group. The students' ability in reading comprehension in second grade of senior high school in SMA Negeri 1 Donorojo Jepara in comprehending English text is poor, after taught using CBI method, the frequency of post-test increased from poor to very good.Teachers may use the CBI method as an effective and innovative teaching method to improve students' reading skill. CBI method is also recommended to be applied in the hybrid classrooms.

Abstract

The results of the survey conducted by a team of Universitas PGRI Semarang in January 2018 showed that Kelurahan JabunganSemarang has abundant local potential that is (1) designated as empon-empon thematic village, (2) has a tourist attraction of Bukit Panji Laras, (3) ) has the potential of processed food products, but the problem of this village is the less awareness of the local government and the society. They do not realize the potential of their village needs to be known by the public. Therefore, the team Universitas PGRI Semarang provides solutions through community service programs, especially those related to online-based marketing and social media by applying methods of problem identification, training program, mentoring program, and monitoring and evaluation program. The keynote speaker of this program is Mr. Andi Priyolistiyono, S. Kom, M.Kom, an online marketing expert who collaborates with the team who are also expert and successful business men. The focus of this program is on-line marketing and social media for food products that are made by the local society in Kelurahan Jabungan. The team facilitates this training with producers who have market shares, one of which is Madhang.id. The training results show that the participants are able to master the training materials very well. It is evident by their products have been display at Madhang.id.

Abstract

ABSTRACTProsperous family is the desire for every individual, but many influential factors to achieve the condition. One is how to implement 8 family functions. Many citizens who do not understand and do not even know about the 8 functions of the family itself. This is evidenced by the many problems that people complain about family problems. Whereas if the community can implement these functions, the existence of family problems can be minimized. This condition is known when the devotees conduct the counseling process in the "Pojok Konseling". Therefore, in community service activities conducted by the Team KKN PPM Kampung KB University of PGRI Semarang in the district Muktiharjo Kidul, Pedurungan, Semarang given counseling about the family function in an effort to foster a prosperous family. This activity was attended by 31 participants of the resident Muktiharjo Kidul Semarang through lecture and discussion methods. The results of the analysis through observation and feedback from the participants showed that the participants pleasured to gain knowledge and understanding to achieve prosperous family through the implementation of 8 family functions.Keywords: prosperous family, 8 family functions.ABSTRAKKeluarga sejahtera adalah dambaan bagi setiap individu, akan tetapi banyak faktor yang berpengaruh untuk dapat mencapai kondisi tersebut. Salah satunya adalah bagaimana menerapkan 8 fungsi keluarga. Banyak warga masyarakat yang belum memahami dan bahkan belum mengetahui tentang 8 fungsi keluarga tersebut. Hal ini terbukti dengan banyaknya masalah yang dikeluhkan masyarakat berkaitan dengan permasalahan keluarga. Padahal jika masyarakat dapat menerapkan fungsi-fungsi tersebut, adanya permasalahan keluarga dapat diminimalkan. Kondisi ini diketahui ketika pengabdi melakukan proses konseling di “Pojok Konseling”. Oleh karena itu, dalam kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang dilakukan oleh Tim KKN PPM Kampung KB Universitas PGRI Semarang di Muktiharjo Kidul Kecamatan Pedurungan Semarang diberikan penyuluhan tentang fungsi keluarga dalam upaya membina keluarga sejahtera. Kegiatan ini diikuti oleh 31 peserta warga Muktiharjo Kidul Semarang melalui metode ceramah dan diskusi. Hasil analisis melalui observasi dan umpan balik dari peserta, menunjukkan bahwa peserta menunjukan rasa senang mendapatkan pengetahuan dan pemahaman untuk mencapai keluarga sejahtera melalui penerapan 8 fungsi keluarga.Kata kunci: keluarga sejahtera, 8 fungsi keluarga.

Abstract

Kelurahan Bubakan is located in District Mijen in Semarang city. The potential of this village is very huge. There are Posdaya and 2 (two) farmer groups with various fields of business; chicken farms, goat farmers, tapioca starch factories. However, the survey found 74 families of pre-prosperous and 86 prosperous families level 1 out of 245 families who joined Posdaya. The condition and local potential that maximized by the team through KKN-PPM by doing catfish cultivation program in the yard by using tarpaulins as an economic means to achieve maximum target. The superior skills of the program is through; (a) cultivation of catfish, (b) making processed catfish derived products, (c) packing processed products based on catfish, (d) marketing of processed products derived from catfish. The implementation of KKN-PPM 2016 program has been implemented well and in accordance with the target that has been designed is 20 (twenty) tarpaulin ponds with the size 4x6m2 and 1000 seedlings / ponds have been distributed on August 17, 2016. Therefore, most of the residents have felt the results of KKN-PPM catfish program. Assistance from University of PGRI Semarang remains to realize the program of dedication and community empowerment as a sustainable program.Keywords: Increased income, Posdaya, Catfish farming, Home yard.ABSTRAKKelurahan Bubakan terletak di Kecamatan Mijen Kota Semarang. Potensi kelurahan ini sangat besar. Terdapat posdaya dan 2 (dua) kelompok tani dengan bermacam bidang usaha, ada peternakan ayam, peterternakan kambing, pabrik tepung tapioka. Namun masih ditemukan 74 keluarga prasejahtera dan 86 keluarga sejahtera 1 dari 245 kepala keluarga yang tergabung dalam posdaya. Kondisi masyarakat serta potensi lokal yang ada tersebut dimaksimalkan oleh tim melalui program KKN-PPM budidaya lele di pekarangan rumah dengan menggunakan terpal sebagai sarana yang ekonomis guna mencapai target yang maksimal. Adapun keterampilan unggulan program adalah melalui; (a) budidaya ikan lele, (b) membuat produk olahan turunan ikan lele, (c) packing produk olahan berbahan dasar ikan lele, (d) pemasaran produk olahan turunan ikan lele. Pelaksanaan program KKN-PPM 2016 telah terlaksana dengan baik dan sesuai  dengan target yang telah dirancang yaitu 20 (dua puluh) kolam terpal dengan ukuran 4x6m2 dan 1000 bibit lele/kolam telah disebarkan pada tanggal 17 Agustus 2016 sehingga saat ini sebagian besar dari warga telah merasakan hasil panen lele hasil program KKN-PPM tersebut. Pendampingan dari pihak Universitas PGRI Semarang serta Kecamatan dan Kelurahan Bubakan terus dilakukan untuk mewujudkan program pengabdian dan pemberdayaan masyarakat secara berkelanjutan (sustainable).Kata Kunci: Peningkatan penghasilan, Posdaya, Budidaya ikan lele, Pekarangan rumah.

Abstract

This study focused on analyzing the figurative language contained in the album “Detourn”by The S.I.G.I.T as non-native speakers. The aim of this research is; 1) to find out the typeof figurative language used in the album “Detourn” by The S.I.G.I.T. 2) to find out thedominant type of figurative language used in The S.I.G.I.T album “Detourn”. Researchersconducted qualitative research using song lyrics data. The result showed that; 1) there are 8types of figurative language used in the album “Detourn” namely Hyperbole (1), Irony (1),Personification (2), Synecdoche (2), Simile (3), Metonymy (11), Repetition (13), andMetaphor (18). 2) Metaphor is the most dominant type of figurative language with a total of18 expressions. There are 9 songs that have metaphors with an average of 2 expressions ineach song. The first song and the seventh song have 1 expression. The second, third, ninth,tenth and eleventh songs with 2 expressions. The fifth and sixth songs with 3 expressions.

Abstract

Abstract. The aim of the research is to investigate the implementation of Discovery Listening. This study focused on the use of the Discovery Listening technique as well as the perception of the students after using Discovery Listening technique. To a great extent, this study wanted to give an account of the study conducted by Ardini, et al. (2020) who applied Wilson’s theory. It was achieved using explanatory sequential mixed-methods research design within 30 students of the 1st semester of Universitas PGRI Semarang. Tests and questionnaire were employed to collect the data which then analyzed using SPSS version 27 and supported by descriptive qualitative data. The result shows the mean score of pre-test was 55.17 and post-test was 72.20. The findings of this study indicated that the implementation of the Discovery Listening technique has improved students’ performance by showing 74% of the students’ score was upgraded and 2 respondents got outstanding achievement from Low to High. Additionally, it can alter the environment of educational activities, transforming a passive class into an active one. The group work also helped the students to overcome their listening problem. Those indicated that it gave positive perceptions from the students, most importantly, the students can learn a new thing. The results of this study can support the previous study from Ardini, et al. (2020) that Discovery Listening is very effective to be applied in higher education as well as increasing students’ critical thinking.Keywords: effectiveness; Discovery Listening technique; higher education; listening competenceAbstrak. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki implementasi Discovery Listening. Studi ini berfokus pada penggunaan teknik Discovery Listening serta persepsi siswa setelah menggunakan teknik Discovery Listening. Secara garis besar, penelitian ini ingin memberikan penjelasan tentang penelitian yang dilakukan oleh Ardini, dkk. (2020) yang menerapkan teori Wilson. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan desain penelitian metode campuran sekuensial melalui 30 siswa semester 1 Universitas PGRI Semarang. Tes dan kuesioner digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data yang kemudian dianalisis menggunakan SPSS versi 27 dan didukung oleh data kualitatif deskriptif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan nilai rata-rata pre-test adalah 55,17 dan post-test adalah 72,20. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penerapan teknik Discovery Listening telah meningkatkan kinerja siswa sebanyak 74% nilai siswa meningkat dan 2 siswa berhasil melompat dari kriteria rendah ke tinggi. Selain itu, dapat mengubah lingkungan kegiatan pendidikan, mengubah kelas pasif menjadi kelas aktif. Kerja kelompok juga membantu siswa untuk mengatasi masalah mendengarkan mereka. Hasil tersebut mengindikasikan adanya persepsi positif dari siswa, yang paling penting, para siswa dapat mempelajari hal baru. Hasil penelitian ini dapat mendukung penelitian sebelumnya dari Ardini, dkk. (2020), bahwa Discovery Listening sangat efektif diterapkan di perguruan tinggi serta meningkatkan berpikir kritis mahasiswa. Oleh karena itu, disarankan kepada peneliti selanjutnya untuk menerapkan Discovery Listening pada jenjang pendidikan yang lebih rendah seperti SMA atau bahkan SD.Kata kunci: efektivitas; keterampilan mendengarkan; pendidikan tinggi; teknik Discovery Listening

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the teachers' opinion about self-reflection which improves their teaching performance. This research was done at SMA Islam Sultan Agung 1 Semarang with a total number of population was four English teachers. An open-ended questionnaire was used to collect data in this research. The questionnaire was distributed to respondents through google form on May 2023. After the data were collected, they were analyzed thematically. The data were extracted and discussed into the following six themes, namely (a) important form of evaluation, (b) perfect timing, (c) personal or collaborative self-Reflection, (d) documentation, (e) the benefit, (f) challenging, (g) boredom, and (h)teaching performances. Based on the results and discussion from the previous section, it can be concluded that teachers acquire self-awareness, identify areas for improvement, adjust their methods, respond to student needs, and strive for continual professional progress through self-flection.
