Abstract

This research endeavors to explore the efficacy of online English learning at SMA Negeri 3 Palu. Its primary objective was to contribute to the ongoing discussion in this field by (1) investigating the effectiveness of online English language learning at SMAN 3 Palu and (2) identifying factors contributing to the challenges faced by both teachers and students in the context of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, this study involved five English teachers and ten representatives from SMAN 3 students, with two students selected from each class taught by the teachers through purposive sampling. Data collection involved in-depth individual interviews with the informants. Thematic analysis techniques were applied, involving four stages: transcription, coding, categorization, and drawing conclusions from the coded data. The findings revealed that online English learning was ineffective for students at SMAN 3 Palu due to issues such as internet connectivity, the availability of students' smartphones, and the fact that the majority of students reside in remote areas of Sigi regency, which posed challenges for implementing online English learning.

Abstract

The Implementation of Genre-Based Approach in Writing Narrative Text aims to examine the effectiveness of the Genre-Based Approach (GBA) in enhancing narrative text writing skills among eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 19 Palu. The research method employed is quasi-experimental with two groups: an experimental group applying GBA and a control group that did not receive this treatment. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test assessments to measure students' writing skill improvements. The findings indicate that the average score of the experimental group increased from 54.55 to 73.62, while the control group improved from 40.07 to 64.15. In addition to score improvements, the quality of students' writing also showed enhancement in aspects of content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. This study provides evidence that the Genre-Based Approach can significantly improve students' writing skills.

Vocabulary can be defined as the list of words in a language that are understood and memorized, playing an important role in communication and learning processes, while reading comprehension is the ability to understand, interpret, and evaluate the meaning of written texts. This study aims to investigate the correlation between vocabulary and reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 3 Palu. The method used was correlational research, employing vocabulary tests and reading comprehension tests as data collection instruments. The sample consisted of 36 students selected through purposive sampling. The collected data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment correlation technique. The results showed a significant positive correlation between vocabulary and reading comprehension ability at SMA Negeri 3 Palu. These findings indicate that an increase in vocabulary can improve reading comprehension.

Abstract

Listening is an essential skill in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning; however, many students experience listening anxiety that may affect their academic performance. Previous studies have reported inconsistent findings regarding the correlation between listening anxiety and listening achievement, indicating the need for further investigation in different educational contexts, particularly in Indonesian higher education. This study aimed to examine the correlation between students' listening anxiety and listening achievement among fourth-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Tadulako University. A quantitative correlational design involving 35 students was employed. Data were collected using a validated listening anxiety questionnaire and students' final listening examination scores and analyzed using the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation test. The findings revealed a very weak negative correlation between listening anxiety and listening achievement (r = −0.063, p = .720), indicating no statistically significant relationship between the two variables. The study concludes that listening anxiety was not a determining factor of students' listening achievement in this context. These findings contribute to the growing body of EFL listening research by providing empirical evidence from an Indonesian university setting and suggest that factors beyond anxiety, such as listening strategies, language proficiency, and learner motivation, may play a more substantial role in determining listening achievement.

Abstract

African American Vernacular English (AAVE) is a rule-governed variety of English that remains marginalized in many EFL classrooms, where Standard English dominates instruction. In Indonesia, students are increasingly exposed to AAVE through digital media, yet little is known about their perceptions of this variety. This study explored students’ perceptions of AAVE in English learning contexts at Tadulako University. A descriptive qualitative design was employed, with data collected through semi-structured interviews involving three eighth-semester English Education students. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed three major themes: students’ initial impressions and emotional responses to AAVE, their views on its legitimacy and role in English education, and the influence of digital media on their perceptions and language use. Overall, the participants perceived AAVE as a legitimate and culturally meaningful variety of English while recognizing Standard English as more appropriate for formal academic settings. Although the findings provide in-depth insights into students’ perceptions, the small sample size limits the transferability of the results to broader EFL contexts. Nevertheless, this study highlights the importance of introducing diverse English varieties in EFL classrooms to promote linguistic awareness, cultural understanding, and inclusive language education.
