Abstract

Abstract The novel Samira and Samir by Siba Shakib presents a vivid portrayal of gender oppression and identity struggles in a patriarchal Afghan society. Through the lens of Samira, a girl forced to live as a boy named Samir to protect her family's honor, the novel explores how rigid gender norms suppress women's identities and limit their freedoms. Samira’s experience illustrates the social construction of gender roles, where men hold power and women are subjugated. The novel also highlights the emotional and psychological conflicts women face as they navigate these oppressive structures. This paper analyzes how the socio-cultural and patriarchal systems depicted in the novel shape gender identity and the resistance of Afghan women against social injustice. By examining the interplay between social expectations and personal identity, the novel sheds light on the ongoing struggle for gender equality in traditional societies. Abstract

Abstract This study aims to explore color symbolism and the concept of the American Dream in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Using an in-depth analytical approach, this study reveals the symbolic meanings of colors such as green, white, yellow, red, blue, and grey used by Fitzgerald to reinforce the novel's main themes, including hope, luxury, moral emptiness, and the destruction of dreams. In addition, this study also highlights how the term American Dream reflects the ambition, love, and moral downfall of the Jazz Age. Symbolism in the novel, such as the green light, Valley of Ashes, and Dr. T.J. Eckleburg's eyes, show how Fitzgerald utilizes narrative elements to convey social criticism of the post-World War I society. This research is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the relationship between color symbolism and the theme of the American Dream in the social and cultural context of its time. Keywords: F. Scott Fitsgerald, Symbolism, American Dream, Symbolic Meaning, Colors. The Great Gatsby karya F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Arabic literature experienced a significant thematic transformation from the Umayyad to the Abbasid period. In the Umayyad era, poetry was still rooted in classical qasidah, focusing on praise, tribal pride, and romantic ideals. However, the Abbasid era brought a wave of literary renewal, influenced by sociopolitical and cultural shifts. This study explores how these contexts shaped literary themes and styles, using a descriptive qualitative approach through library research and textual analysis. It focuses on works by Al-Farazdaq, Al-Akhtal, Jarir, Abu Nawas, Abu al-Atahiyah, Dibil al-Khuza’i, and Al-Jahiz. The findings reveal that poetry in the Abbasid era became a tool for social criticism, spiritual reflection, and personal expression. Meanwhile, Al-Jahiz significantly advanced Arabic prose, making it more intellectual and educational. This study concludes that Arabic literature evolved not only in form and content, but also in function, reflecting the intellectual and cultural dynamism of Islamic civilization.
