Abstract

This study aims to examine the concept of the word "sea" in the Qur'an using a semantic approach according to Toshihiko Izutsu. Izutsu's profound semantic theory is applied to analyze this concept in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the meaning contained in "the sea." This research employs a qualitative approach involving the analysis of the content of the Qur'an. Although the Arabic word "البحر" (al-bahr) literally means "sea," its meaning is expanded to encompass spiritual, philosophical, and symbolic aspects. In several surahs, the word "البحر" is mentioned sixty times. This study demonstrates that the sea not only plays an important role in human life but also serves as a symbol of goodness, mercy, and divine power in creating and managing the universe. The sea also represents values such as tawakkul (trust in God), gratitude, and perseverance in the face of life's trials and tribulations. The study finds that the concept of "the sea" in the Qur'an is both complex and encompasses many metaphysical and physical meanings. Toshihiko Izutsu's exegesis reveals the truth of the Qur'an and its impact on knowledge, particularly in the field of oceanography; his semantic approach aids in understanding the depth of the word's meaning and provides deeper insights to readers regarding this phenomenon.

Abstract

This study aims to find out Muhammad Asad's interpretation in The Message of the Qur'an, to verses related to human deeds. Muhammad Asad in his commentary, prioritizes the understanding that human beings are given the freedom to choose their actions (free will), but he is still responsible for these choices before Allah. Asad emphasized that the Qur'an not only provides moral and ethical guidance, but also provides space for man to develop in his awareness of his duty in the world and the world. In general, Asad focuses on the following understanding: Asad interprets verses that mention man's freedom to choose his actions as a gift from God, where man is given the freedom to choose his way of life. In this case, man is fully responsible for the actions he chooses. Second, in his interpretation, Asad refers to the concept of man as the caliph (representative) of Allah on earth. Therefore, humans must shoulder moral and social responsibilities in living life in the world. Third, Asad highlighted that every deed done by man will be rewarded according to his intentions and deeds. Good or bad deeds always have great spiritual consequences. Fourth, Asad also emphasized that in understanding human actions, every human action that has an impact on society must also be carried out with awareness of the values of goodness and justice outlined in the Qur'an.

Abstract

This paper talks about the semantic meaning of the word Shaffa in the Qur'an. The author uses a semantic approach, which is an analytical study of the key terms of a language with a view that finally arrives at a conceptual meaning or worldview. This study uses a qualitative research motto with a descriptive discussion motto of analysis with the type of literature research. This research was conducted to find the meaning of the word Shaffa. Shaffa is based on the weltanschauung (worldview) of the Qur'an. The author uses Toshihiko Izutsu's semantic approach in finding the meaning of the word saffa because Izutsu offers the concept of letting the Qur'an explain and talk about itself' as it has been known in the science of tafsir called tafsir bi al ma'sur or tafsir of verses with verses'. The meaning of "shaffa" or "line" in the Islamic thought tradition, specifically the one discussed by Toshihiko Izutsu, offers a deeper understanding of the relationship between humans, God, and the universe. In Izutsu's studies, the shaffa is not only seen as a physical structure in religious rituals such as prayers, but also as a symbol of unity and harmony created in the diversity of the people. Izutsu interprets the concept of shaffa as a representation of the metaphysical principles that govern the spiritual world, in which each individual, despite having a separate identity, functions in a greater unity in worship of God. This thought leads to the understanding that shaffa reflects the cosmic order that connects the entire creation, affirming the values of togetherness, discipline, and order in society, ultimately serving as a medium for achieving spiritual closeness to God. Thus, according to Izutsu, the shaffa became an important symbol in explaining the spiritual and social order in Islam that was not only ritualistic, but also philosophical and metaphysical.

Abstract

The Bay’at Ar-Ridwan is an important event in Islamic history that illustrates the commitment and loyalty of the Muslims to the Prophet Muhammad, which took place under a tree in Hudaybiyyah. This event not only became a symbol of unity and determination but also a moment when Allah granted a great reward to the Muslims, as explained in Surah Al-Fatḥ. The purpose of this research is to analyze how the bay’at Ar-Ridwan and Allah's response to the Muslims are explained in the interpretation of Surah Al-Fatḥ, particularly in the context of verses related to the promise of victory and divine assistance. This research uses classical and contemporary exegesis approaches to explore the historical and spiritual context of the bay’at Ar-Ridwan event and the implications of Allah's response in the lives of Muslims. The research results show that Surah Al-Fatḥ verses 18 to 19, illustrate how the loyalty of Muslims in the bay’at Ridwan brings about Allah's pleasure and assistance, which is evident in their future victories, including the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah that paved the way for the spread of Islam.

Abstract

This study explores the relevance of the halal and tayyib principles in the Qur'an and Hadith to modern food safety issues. A qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical design was employed to analyze Qur'anic texts, Hadiths, and relevant secondary literature. Data were collected through document analysis and analyzed using deductive-inductive methods to identify the relationship between Islamic teachings and contemporary food safety practices. The findings reveal that the principles of halal and tayyib encompass legality, quality, cleanliness, and food safety dimensions. Verses such as Surah Al-Baqarah (2:172) and Surah Al-Maidah (5:88) emphasize the importance of consuming food that is halalan thayyiban. The Hadiths on cleanliness and covering food containers align with modern food safety practices, such as contamination prevention. Additionally, literature indicates that consumers associate the halal label with high-quality and safe food standards. This study concludes that Islamic principles like halalan thayyiban can serve as theoretical and practical guidelines to address current food safety challenges. The research contributes to Islamic knowledge by offering a framework to integrate religious values into modern food safety systems. The findings open opportunities for future research, including field studies, cross-cultural collaboration, and the application of technology in halal certification.

Abstract

The prank phenomenon has become a rampant trend among the millennial generation, especially in the realm of social media. Pranks are often thought of as a form of entertainment and humor, but in some cases, the practice can have a negative impact, including harming the other party both physically and psychologically. In Islam, there are limits to joking that emphasize honesty, ethics, and not harming others. This research aims to criticize various academic studies that discuss the phenomenon of prank in the perspective of the Qur'an. Pranks as a social phenomenon that develops in the digital era are often studied from various perspectives, including Qur'anic interpretation, hadith, psychology, and Islamic law. Using the library research method, this study evaluates the weaknesses and advantages of previous studies related to prank, especially in terms of methods, sources of interpretation used, and the relevance of the study in the modern social context. The results of the analysis show that most of the previous research is still limited to certain interpretations, lacks consideration of psychological and sociological aspects, and is minimal in discussing legal regulations related to pranks on social media. This study is expected to provide new insights in examining the phenomenon of pranks more comprehensively, taking into account a broader perspective in Islamic studies and social sciences.

Abstract

The development of digital communication technology has created a new lifestyle that significantly influences how Muslim women express themselves in public spaces, particularly through sosial media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. This phenomenon has led to the rise of tabarruj (a practice of excessive beautification and self-exposure intended to attract male attention) which is clearly prohibited in Islamic teachings. This study aims to explore the transformation of the concept of tabarruj within the Qur’anic perspective, through the interpretations of both classical and contemporary Islamic scholars. It also investigates how tabarruj manifests in various forms on sosial media today. The study employs a literature review and ethnographic content analysis. Five major Qur’anic exegeses are examined: Tafsir Al-Jami’ li Ahkam al-Qur’an (Imam Al-Qurthubi), Tafsir Al-Thabari, Tafsir Al-Munir (Wahbah az-Zuhaili), Tafsir Al-Azhar (Buya Hamka), and Tafsir Al-Mishbah (Quraish Shihab). Findings show a unanimous agreement among scholars that tabarruj is forbidden, though their interpretations vary based on historical and cultural contexts. In the digital age, tabarruj transcends physical presence and is often displayed in online content such as dancing videos, tight or extravagant clothing, excessive makeup, fashion content (OOTD, GRWM), and even the overuse of the niqab (face veil) not as a sign of piety, but as a tool for gaining popularity or aesthetic appeal. This research highlights how sosial media has become a powerful space for tabarruj, potentially undermining the ethical values and dignity of Muslim women in modern society.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped multiple aspects of social and religious life, including the practice of Islamic da'wah. Restrictions on physical gatherings and the temporary closure of public religious spaces rendered conventional preaching activities—such as mosque-based sermons, village outreach, and intercity da'wah travel—largely impracticable. In response to these constraints, Islamic preachers increasingly adopted digital platforms, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and YouTube, to sustain religious communication. This study employs a content analysis approach to examine online mass-media materials produced by PCIM Turkey (Pimpinan Cabang Istimewa Muhammadiyah Turki) during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on virtual da'wah efforts. The research aims to identify the forms and extent of transformation in da'wah practices implemented by PCIM Turkey as an adaptive response to pandemic-related limitations. Guided by a sociological transformation framework, the findings demonstrate that PCIM Turkey successfully shifted from conventional face-to-face preaching to fully virtual modes of da'wah. This transition enabled the continuity, accessibility, and sustainability of da'wah activities throughout the pandemic period.
