Abstract

Comparative studies and surveys to several medicinal plant gardens in Bogor area and national park areas adjacent to the Bogor have been done in 2006-2009. From these activitis a number of endangered medicinal plants at  Bogor were recorded. At least 12 endangered medicinal plants species found in the area of national parks and some of them have been developed in the medicinal plant gardens. Some species have multi-use such as Oroxylllum indicum, Symplocos odoratissima, and Alstonia scholaris. While it has not found a medicinal plant garden or nursery business in Bogor area to handle the cultivation of the species of endangered  medicinal plants Keywords: surveys, medicinal plant, endangered, Bogor

Abstract

Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP) has a fairly high biodiversity, including plant species which are categorized as threatened, protected and endemic plants in Sumatra. Information regarding the existence of these plant species is not yet widely available. The purpose of this study was to reveal the existence of threatened, protected and endemic plant species in BBSNP. The research was conducted by exploration methods in three BBSNP areas, namely Kubu Prahu (West Lampung Regency), Sukaraja Atas (Tanggamus Regency) and Rata Agung (Pesisir Barat Regency). A number of target species have been obtained, including 13 threatened plant species, 6 protected plant species, and 7 endemic Sumatran plant species. In addition, three plant species have been included in CITES Appendix 2. The results of the study can be used as a reference for future flora conservation efforts. Keywords: BBSNP, endemic plant, protected, threatened

Abstract

Reproduction Habits (Flowering, Fruitting and germination) of Phaleria spp. at Bogor Botanical Garden, One Step Towards Its Conservation. Phaleria is potensial genus for ornamental and medicinal plant. This genus consist of 38 species in the world, of which distributed in Indonesia particularly in Sulawesi and Papua, three of them are conserved at Bogor Botanical Garden. In some countries, the plants have been used for medical treatments, craft, food sources, and ornamental plant. As a preliminary research for the next conservation effort, an evaluating of flowering/fruitting season and generation growth of Phaleria collection was studied. The reason of the research, there is no many seed on the garden grow as a seedling. So the germination studied on the nuresry. The result show tahat January to March as a peak season for flowering/fruitting of Phaleria. The germination rate is very fantastic, 10% of seed have been germinated one day after planted. The result also shows that the fallen seed have germinated higher than picked seed. A thick manure on the land and low sunlight penetration might be the problems on the garden for growing seedling of Phaleria. Keywords: Phaleria, flowering/fruitting season, germination, and conservation.

Abstract

Plant collection in Bogor Botanical Garden (BBG) has various potentials, one of which is as a food source. However, not all food produced from plants can be claimed as functional foods. This study analyses the potential of plants kept in the collections of BBG as functional foods and medicine sources with nutritional and health values. Literature studies have been carried out related to nutrition value and active substances owned by these plants, while data related to health claim was based on the results of ethnobotany studies, especially the use of medicinal plants by 28 ethnics in Indonesia. The results suggest 168 species of the BBG collection which can be claimed as a source of functional food which can be categorized into seven main categories. Among these plants are species classified as threatened or endangered such as Mangifera casturi, Vanilla planifolia, Pterocarpus indicus, Borassus flabellifer, Cycas rumphii, Dillenia philippinensis, and Litchi chinensis. Key words: BBG, functional food, threatened species

Abstract

Bogor Botanical Gardens (Kebun Raya Bogor/KRB) has a long history of medicinal plants conservation.    In order to improve the quality of the medicinal plant collections and its uses, KRB need to manage relevant on public and visitor expectation and key aspects of medicinal plant conservation. This study aims to establish the KRB management strategy for the medicinal plants collection. A set of questionnaires used in this study. The data were processed using the Likert scale, scoring, and the AHP (analytic hierarchy process). The study suggested a total of 60 species that need more attention. Of the 60 species assessed 9 species were prioritised including Anaxagorea javanica, Coscinium fenestratum, Eusideroxylon zwageri, Heritiera littoralis, Kadsura scandens, Santalum album, Lunasia amara, Scorodocarpus borneensis, and Terminalia bellirica.  Three basic conservation aspects  (tri-stimulus amar)  and the key KRB functions need to be strengthened and established and yet to be in line with the public expectation in order to achieve an integrated medicinal plant ex situ conservation.  Key words: public expectation, integrated conservation, Bogor Botanical Gardens

Abstract

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to determine the variability of temperature and its relation to regional processes in the Senunu Bay. The result showed clear vertical stratifications i.e., mixed layer thickness about 39-119 m with isotherm of 27°C, thermocline layer thickness about 83-204 m with isotherm of 14–26°C, and  the deeper layer from the thermocline lower limit to the sea bottom with isotherm <13°C. Temperature and the thickness of each layers varied with season in which during the Northwest Monsoon the temperature was warmer and the mixed layer was thicker than those during Southeast Monsoon. During Southeast Monsoon, the thermocline layer rose  about 24 m. The 2001, 2006, and 2009 (weak La Nina years),  the Indonesia Throughflow (ITF) carried warmer water, deepening thermocline depth and reducing upwelling strength.  In 2003 and 2008 thickening of mixed layer occurred in transition season  was believed  associated with the  arrival of Kelvin Wave from the west. In 2002 and 2004 (weak El Nino period,) ITF carries colder water shallowing thermocline depth and enhancing upwelling strength. In 2007 was believed to be related with positive IODM where the sea surface temperature were decreasing due to intensification of southeast wind which induced strong upwelling. The temperature spectral density of mixed layer and thermocline was influenced by annual, semi-annual, intra-annual and inter-annual period fluctuations. The cross-correlation between wind and temperature showed significant value in the annual period.  Keywords: temperature, thermocline, variability, ENSO, IODM.

Abstract

Alas Purwo National Park is one of representative tropical low rain forests at eastern Java. There are many natural attractive sites and historical legend, which lead to, famous for ecotourisme activities. There are also rich of flora and fauna that some of them endemic and endangered species. Medicinal plant is one important material on the forest, which still unexplored more. Ten sampling transects were established in some sector of Alas Purwo for inventory of wild medicinal plants. The result shows that at least 5 species have been categorized as an endangered plant. Meanwhile, the structure and composition of endangered medicinal plants is not better than common medicinal plants.
