Abstract

The concept of religious terms are significant for the sake of teaching and learning Islam and pertains to expressions derived predominantly from one or more religious books. This study seeks to delve into the religious terms and expressions present in the book "Islam: A Short History," aiming to scrutinize their types, meanings, and provide examples. Employing a qualitative research approach, the author elaborates on the various religious terms encountered in the book. While previous research has identified and discussed 14 religious terms, it is acknowledged that these terms fall short of encompassing the entire array of religious expressions found in the book. Following a thorough examination of "Islam: A Short History," the author introduces a new term, "owner of the religion," as a necessary addition to address certain religious expressions. This new term emerges from a deliberate departure from the previous term, "supernatural being," due to a perceived misalignment between the type and the provided examples. Furthermore, the research underscores the influence of Arabic on religious terms. Analyzing religious terms in teaching Islam provides significant contributions by fostering understanding, enriching cultural knowledge, and encouraging critical discourse.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to develop a religious text translation model based on rechecking semantic-communicative analysis to improve translation quality. The model supports semantic accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and moderation in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Theoretical framework: This research integrates semantic and communicative translation theory, cognitive-communicative approaches, functional translation principles, and hermeneutic interpretation. These frameworks collectively support a holistic and ethically grounded approach to religious translation. Literature review: Previous studies on religious translation focus mainly on isolated linguistic or cultural strategies, with limited integration of systematic rechecking and SDGs perspectives. This study addresses the gap by proposing an integrated semantic-communicative and contextual model. Methods: This study employs a qualitative approach using data from Islam: A Short History and focus group discussions with Qur’an translation teachers. Semantic-communicative analysis, rechecking procedures, and hermeneutic interpretation are applied to ensure accuracy and contextual relevance. Results: The findings indicate that religious text translation faces challenges related to semantic non-equivalence and cultural context. Integrating semantic-communicative analysis improves readability and meaning accuracy. Rechecking procedures effectively reduces the distortion of key religious terms. Implications: The study highlights the need for translator training that integrates linguistic and religious knowledge. It also supports the use of contextualized glossaries and cautious machine translation with rechecking mechanisms in line with the SDGs. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in its holistic and replicable translation model integrating semantic-communicative analysis, expert-based rechecking, and hermeneutic interpretation. This approach advances translation studies by linking linguistic accuracy with ethical and sustainable knowledge transmission.

Abstract

Purpose: The study aims to identify the type of speech acts found in positive comments on the TikTok trend "30 Days English speaking Challenge" and to explore the contextual function of these speech acts in the comments section. Methodology: This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The data in this study were collected using purposive sampling by selecting positive English comments from the video trends in TikTok account @alelcipta uploaded from July to August 2025. The comments were chosen based on relevance to the content of the challenge videos and their suitability for the research focus in terms of speech acts. The data were analyzed using qualitative analysis techniques as proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994) which consist of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The technique used included documentation by taking screenshots of comments and analyzed according to Searle's (1979) classification of speech acts-assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. Then the data analyzed in greater depth to represent the functions or meanings behind the types of speech acts. Results: This study shows there are five types of speech acts identified, except for declarative speech acts. A total of 145 positive comments were found, with the details : assertive (30), directive (37), commissive (7), and expressive (71). Applications/Originality/Value: This study has the potential to highlight the role of positive feedback in building self-confidence and motivation to learn, especially for English learners in online communities, as well as enriching the creation of a supportive and constructive environment on social media.
