Abstract

Academic procrastination is a common self-regulatory problem among university students that may impede the timely and effective completion of academic tasks. This study examined the association between academic grit and academic procrastination among university students in Indonesia, hypothesizing that higher academic grit would be associated with lower academic procrastination. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted among 386 university students recruited through convenience sampling (305 women and 81 men; age range = 17–24 years, M = 19.37, SD = 1.39). Participants completed the Indonesian versions of the 10-item Academic Grit Scale (AGS) and the five-item Academic Procrastination Scale–Short Form (APS-S) through an online questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were performed using robust maximum likelihood estimation (MLR). The structural model demonstrated acceptable fit, χ²(89) = 215.132, p < .001, RMSEA = .061, 90% CI [.050, .071], CFI = .923, TLI = .909, and SRMR = .047. Academic grit was significantly and inversely associated with academic procrastination, β = −.319, SE = .066, z = −4.800, p < .001, 95% CI [−.449, −.189]. The model explained 10.2% of the variance in academic procrastination (R² = .102), indicating a modest association between the two constructs. These findings suggest that academic grit may represent a relevant personal resource associated with lower levels of academic procrastination. Nevertheless, because the variables were assessed concurrently using self-report measures, temporal ordering and causal direction cannot be established. Longitudinal and multi-method research is needed to clarify the direction and robustness of this association.
