Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: Knowledge is the result of human curiosity, and in dental education, students are required to understand the fundamentals of dental radiology. Panoramic radiography, as one of the most frequently used imaging modalities, plays an important role in supporting diagnosis; however, a limited understanding of basic dental radiology concepts often complicates the interpretation process. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between the level of dental radiology knowledge and the ability to interpret panoramic radiographs among preclinical dental students. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design using a questionnaire. A total sampling technique was applied, involving 146 students from the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Mulawarman. Bivariate analysis was conducted using Spearman’s rho correlation test. The variables assessed were dental radiology knowledge and panoramic radiograph interpretation ability. Results: The findings indicated that 49.3% of students had good dental radiology knowledge, 41.8% had good ability in interpreting panoramic radiographs, and 39.0% were good in both variables. Correlation analysis showed a statistically significant correlation between dental radiology knowledge and the interpretation of panoramic radiographs (Sig. [2-tailed] = 0.001). Conclusions: There is a significant correlation between dental radiology knowledge and the ability to interpret panoramic radiographs among dental students at Universitas Mulawarman.KEY WORDS: knowledge, dental radiology, interpretation, panoramic radiograph, studentsKorelasi pengetahuan dental radiologi dengan kemampuan interpretasi radiograf panoramik pada mahasiswa kedokteran gigi: Studi cross-sectionalABSTRAK Pendahuluan: Pengetahuan merupakan hasil dari rasa ingin tahu manusia dan dalam pendidikan kedokteran gigi mahasiswa diharuskan memahami dasar dental radiologi.

Abstract

Objectives: This research aims to evaluate some aspects of the knowledge level in dental medicine students at Mulawarman University regarding the use of lateral cephalometric radiography in orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: This research uses a quantitative methodology with a descriptive cross- sectional approach conducted at the medical faculty of the Mulawarman University dentistry study program located in Samarinda Ulu District. The research sample was taken by a total sampling method and consisted of 90 Mulawarman University dentistry students. Research data were obtained through primary data collection in the form of questionnaires that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The results showed that more respondents had a good level of knowledge, with as many as 41 students (45.56%). The class of 2022 dental students had a more dominant level of good knowledge, with as many as 13 students (68.42%) of the total class of 2022 students, and the class of 2021 dental students also had a good level of knowledge, with as many as 13 students (59.09%) of the total class of 2021. The results also show that the factor of high interest in learning is owned by the class of 2022, as many as 18 students (94.74%), and high interest also affects knowledge, so that with high interest, you can get a good level of knowledge (97.56%). In addition, the factor of how to study by non-cramming learning method is dominantly owned by the class of 2022, as many as 15 students (78.95%), and the factor of how to study can affect one's knowledge, so that by learning not overnight, the speed system can get a good level of knowledge (78.05%). Conclusion: In general, dental medicine students are knowledgeable about lateral cephalometric radiography. This level of knowledge is good, and in this study, the results showed that the class of 2022 most dominantly exhibited a non-cramming method and a high level of learning interest.

Abstract

Objectives: This case report is aimed to report radiographic features of complex odontoma with mandibular third molar agenesis an incidental rare case. Case Report: A 22-year-old female presented to the Dental Hospital Mulawarman University with a complaint of pain accompanied by tooth sensitivity in the maxillary molar. Extraoral clinical examination revealed no abnormal findings. Intraoral clinical examination showed a dental restoration on tooth 16. Radiographic findings revealed a radiopaque area suggestive of a restorative material, accompanied by a radiolucent lesion extending from the disto-occlusal region to the pulp chamber of tooth 16. Incidentally, an irregular, well-defined, corticated lesion was observed in the mandible region, associated with the absence of tooth 38. These findings were consistent with a complex odontoma occurring in conjunction with agenesis of the mandible third molar. Conclusion: In this case, unilateral irregular round radiopaque well–defined corticated and the absence of third molar teeth in the mandible were found as the radiographic features that led to the suspect radiodiagnosis of a complex odontoma with agenesis of the third molar.
