Abstract

This research aims to describe and analyze the function of Batak Toba sacred songs in the Charismatic worship of GBI Mawar Saron, Simalingkar B, and in the worship of HKBP Pardomuan, Simalingkar B, Medan. It also seeks to identify and compare the meanings contained in Batak Toba sacred songs within Charismatic and HKBP traditional worship, as well as to examine how the functions and meanings of these songs transform when used in different worship contexts. The researcher employs a qualitative-descriptive approach using observation, interviews, and documentation conducted directly at the selected research sites. The theoretical framework applied in this study includes Alan P. Merriam’s theory of the functions of music and Jean-Jacques Nattiez’s musical meaning analysis. The findings indicate that there are significant changes in musical style, song presentation, and worship structure, revealing differences in the liturgical and expressive functions between the two churches. Nevertheless, Batak Toba sacred songs continue to serve as a medium of spiritual unity and cultural identity among the congregations. Through this study, the researcher hopes to contribute to the field of ethnomusicology and enhance cross-traditional understanding within the practice of Christianity in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study explores the ritual of making and the playing techniques of the Lobat Pakpak in Sukaramai Village, Kerajaan District, Pakpak Bharat Regency. The background of the research lies in the significance of the Lobat, which functions not only as a musical instrument but also as a medium of spirituality and cultural identity for the Pakpak community. The objectives are to describe the ritual process of crafting the Lobat, explain its playing techniques, and analyze the musical structure of its repertoire. The fieldwork was conducted over a one-week period starting on June 12 until completion, involving six key informants, including instrument makers, traditional players, and cultural leaders. The data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, audio-visual recordings, and musical transcription. A qualitative method with an ethnographic approach was applied. Dhavamony’s theory was employed to examine ritual aspects, Kashima Susumu’s theory for organological study, and Malm and Prier’s theories for musical analysis. The findings reveal that the making of the Lobat combines technical craftsmanship with sacred rituals, while its performance emphasizes breath control, simple fingering, and pentatonic melodic patterns. Thus, the Lobat represents an intangible cultural heritage reflecting spirituality, local wisdom, and the identity of the Pakpak people.

Abstract

This Research is Entitled Analysis of the Meaning of Populer Batak Toba Songs During the Handover of Ulos Hela at Batak Toba Wedding Ceremonines in Medan City.” These three songs are always chosen to be sung before the Ulos Hela is presented to the bride and groom. To analyze the textual meaning in this study, the author uses Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic theory, focusing on denotative and connotative meanings. In addition, the songs Burju Marsimatua, Gabe Maho Boru, and Borhat Ma Dainang contain advice and prayers with connotative meanings that reflect the social values of the Batak Toba community. The research techniques used are fieldwork and desk work as introduced by Bruno Nettl. The author applies a qualitative method through observation, interviews, and audio-video recording. The findings of this study indicate that the Ulos Hela ceremony is a crucial highlight of the Batak Toba wedding tradition, symbolizing parental love, blessings, and the transfer of responsibility from the bride’s parents to the groom’s family.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of faith and culture in the celebration of the Stations of the Cross and Good Friday at GKPA Sibadoar, Sipirok District, South Tapanuli Regency. Good Friday is an important day for Christians to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. This research aims to describe the manifestation of faith and culture in the Good Friday worship and the Stations of the Cross performance at GKPA Sibadoar. The study uses a qualitative approach with Koentjaraningrat’s Religious Ceremony Theory to analyze the worship, and Milton Singer’s Theory to describe the cultural performance. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and audio-video documentation. The results show that the Good Friday service at GKPA Sibadoar is conducted solemnly and simply, emphasizing Scripture readings, prayers, and reflections on Christ’s suffering, thus strengthening the congregation’s solidarity. The theatrical performance of the Stations of the Cross involving church youth serves as a medium for transmitting faith and expressing local culture. Furthermore, the hymns sung during worship feature strophic melodic patterns, predominantly stepwise intervals, and hanging contours that support the contemplative atmosphere. This study reveals a harmonious integration between religious and cultural values in the celebration of the Stations of the Cross and Good Friday at GKPA Sibadoar, which strengthens the congregation’s faith while preserving local culture
