Abstract

Speaking is one of language skills that are able to used by students in teaching learning process. The teacher also used fishbowl strategy in teaching speaking explanation in which students are able to share their idea and opinion in this strategy. The purpose of the research was to describe the implementation of fishbowl strategy in teaching speaking explanation to the eleventh grade students at English course and to describe students’ responses in teaching speaking by using fishbowl strategy. The research was descriptive qualitative with the data collected from filed note observation, check list observation, questionnaire, and interview. The finding of the implementation of fishbowl strategy in teaching speaking explanation to eleventh grade students at English course was the teacher gave warming up, explained explanation text, made two groups, asked students to turn and talk their opinion and idea, got discussion started, told others students to listen carefully. When the small group finished, asked students to make comment on discussion in the first meeting and the second meeting. In students’ responses by using fishbowl strategy, the percentage showed the answer YES 92,7% and NO 7,3%. It was inferred that fishbowl strategy was able to help the students more active, communicative, and confident in speaking English. The students should be critical thinking in speaking explanation text, and the teacher should remind students to be more enthusiastic.

Abstract

Abstrack The conversation analysis contained in the Talk Show Kick Andy video contains four topics, including the topic of conversation, the structure of the conversation, the transfer of conversation, and the coherence of conversational discourse. On the topic of conversation, three topics were found, namely general topics, ongoing topics and real topics. Furthermore, in the conversation structure, the topic of conversation is found at the beginning of the conversation, the core of the conversation, and the end of the conversation. The conversational speech transfer contains two types of conversational speech transfer. The first is speech switching with an arranged turn, the second is a speech transfer with an automatic turn. The last conversation analysis is the coherence of conversational discourse. Cohesion is shown in the cohesion and coherence in the content of the conversation. Abstract

This study intended to analyze the deixis category, the dominance of deixis usage and analyzed reference meaning  from deixis which was used in a song lyrics of Shape of You by Ed Sheeran. The research question of this research were as follows: the kinds of deixis were employed in this song lyrics, the most frequently types of deixis were applicated in this song lyrics, and the reference meaning related of the deixis used in this song lyrics. This research used the deixis theory from George Yule. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The song lyrics Shape of You by Ed Sheeran were the data of this research. The data were collected by listening, reading the script of the song lyrics, and taking notes of the song lyrics Shape of You’s by Ed Sheeran. The results of the study shows that the type of deixis used in the song's lyrics were deixis of person, temporal,  and spatial. Person deixis was dominant in this research which consisted of 23 or 64% deixis. The reference meaning of this research refers to the author, mentioning location or relative position in the song, and the time of the story in the song. Keywords:  Pragmatics; Deixis; Song Lyrics

Abstract

Deixis become an important function in oral communication. They can resolve confusion, ambiguity, and misunderstanding on meaning of utterances. Among the many formal communication forms, the speech of President Joko Widodo in G20 Summit closing event can become interesting to research in term of deixis study. This article investigates the type of deixis and what deixis is the most dominantly used in the speech of Joko Widodo at the G20 Summit closing. The data were described qualitatively by referring to Levinson. Using Miles and Huberman's interactive mode, the finding shows that among 47 of deixis used, person deixis was 25, temporal deixis 3, social deixis 14, and discourse deixis 5. Person deixis “I” was found to be the most dominant in the speech, which indeed conclude that President Joko Widodo showed himself the the holder of the mandate for holding the G20 Summit in Indonesia. Abstract

Autonomous learning is extremely important because it helps students promote independency, self-awareness, determination, and adaptability in technology employment in learning. The aim of this study is to describe the learning strategies of each autonomous learning level among members of the English Conversation club and to inquire about their outcomes in the form of speaking fluency. Therefore, this study case study research design to find patterns and connections, and inquire phenomena in depth. The results show that the advanced and intermediated level participants employ a metacognitive strategy which helped them to plan, monitor, and evaluate their learning, additionally, they displayed a high level of speaking fluency as the outcome of the strategy they employed. The beginner level employed a social mediation learning strategy and showed less autonomous learning activity but still had high speaking fluency, probably due the language aptitude. Whereas the emerging level participant employ a social mediation learning strategy and showed less autonomous activity, he displayed a low level of fluency. Participants with advanced, intermediated, and beginner level possess intrinsic motivation which helps them with their consistency and improvement. This study helps to understand the relationship between autonomous learning strategies, autonomous level, and speaking fluency outside of the classroom. It provides evidence that metacognitive strategy can lead to speaking fluency improvement and intrinsic motivation. Educators should develop teaching methods that promote the development of independent learning skills and intrinsic motivation in students.

Abstract

Interjection was an important part of language used to express feelings or emotions under any circumstances. In Digital communication, interjections were often used to express feelings quickly and efficiently. The purpose of this research was to describe the expression of interjections in digital communication. This research used qualitative research. The method used in this research was the descriptive method. Digital communication, WhatsApp user was the subject of this investigation in WhatsApp Group. The object of the research was the text used in conversations within the WhatsApp group.The findings contained 6 type interjections from 12 data. There were Interjection of Annoyance, Interjection Admiration or Satisfaction, Interjection of Gratitude, Interjection of Hope, Interjection of Surprise, and Interjection of Call which were found as a consequence of the research. Annoyance was the most frequently used interjection.

Abstract

Jennie, a popular star with millions of fans, used fictional language in an exclusive interview with ELLE magazine. She used figurative language to attract attention, bring personal stories to life, and create profound impressions. Jennie's unique speaking style blended fictional meaning and authentic self-expression, solidifying her position as a modern pop icon. This study used qualitative-descriptive research to accurately describe the object and explain the data in a systematic and thorough manner. The data for this study came from Jennie from Blackpink's YouTube channel, Elle. The documentary technique was used to collect data, which was applied to written or visual materials in order to identify certain qualities of the material, such as textbooks, speeches, ads, or any of these. Based on data taken by researchers, they found that there were 25 sentences, 5 of which contained figurative language and 20 of which did not contain it. In 5 sentences containing figurative language, there were 1 sentences using hyperbole, 3 with metaphors and 1 with repetitions. Jennie effectively used metaphors, personification, idioms, and repetitions to convey her emotions and reality in an interview, creating captivating images and a concise message.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the violating of maxims on the conversation in the webtoon Just Friends by CL Nuna and determine which flouting of the maxims is the most dominant. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method because it explains a lot about violations of maxims. There are 8 data from 1 to 8 episodes that have been analyzed. The process of analyzing uses the theory of Grice which suggests four cooperative principles. Namely manner, relations, quantity and quality. Hasil analisis researchers found many violating from maxims of quantity with a frequency of 3 data and a percentage of 37%. 1 violation of maxims in data quality with 13%. 2 data in violation of maxims relations and 2 data in violation of maxims manner which amounted to 25% percentages.

Abstract

More and more studies on language education are currently considering the use of technology in writing training. Furthermore, the importance of using visual media in EFL lessons has been highlighted by the current study, which aims to help students improve their writing skills. The current study aims to investigate the impact of Canva on students' writing skills. This was accomplished by randomly assigning forty-four Indonesian EFL students—known as the experimental and control groups—to two writing classes. Prior to starting treatment, both groups completed a pre-test. Throughout the sessions, the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach was used to instruct both classes. To help them explore their writing ideas, students in the experimental group were instructed to utilize Canva as a writing medium. After the treatment, a post-test was administered to both groups. The results of the pre-test and post-test were then processed using SPSS with the t test. The results of this test showed that the experimental group that was given treatment got better scores than the control group. After that, interviews were carried out to obtain qualitative data. As a result, each student had positive and negative perceptions.

Abstract

In order to address the education crisis, the government implemented Kurikulum Merdeka. Teachers must be able to adapt to changes in the curriculum in order for curriculum implementation to work smoothly. This study was conducted to get a knowledge of teacher readiness in implementing new curriculum, particularly in kindergarten schools. This research includes a type of descriptive research with a qualitative approach. To identify readiness, interviews were conducted towards teachers in TK Cendekia 2 Sidoarjo. According to the findings of the interviews, teachers are ready to implement kurikulum merdeka. Yet, there is still lack of awareness of the curriculum structure, and there is still a need of training about lesson plans preparation and teaching modules creation. They still don't have a clear concept of why it should be implemented. They also claimed requirements in trainings and times to understand how to integrate advanced technology into learning process.
