Abstract

This study aims to identify the economic resilience strategies of visually impaired families in rural Grobogan Regency, Indonesia, who face the challenges of social exclusion and limited accessibility. The method used is a qualitative approach of a case study wi th a purposive sample consisting of 10 visually impaired families who are actively involved in daily economic activities. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation. The results of the study show that social stigma against people with disabilities is the main obstacle to their participation in economic and social activities. Discrimination in employment opportunities and limited access to education and public services also exacerbate their economic resilience. Nonetheless, rural blind families show resilience through adaptation strategies, such as working in the informal sector, opening home businesses, and leveraging social support from extended families and communities. This research provides new insights into the importance of creating an inclusive social environment and policies that support accessibility for people with disabilities, in order to improve their economic resilience. These findings can also serve as a reference for the government and the community in designing more inclusive empowerment policies.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance the professional competence of SIKK teachers through VAKE-based training that integrates moral and knowledge dimensions in the teaching process. The training was attended by 32 teachers and implemented through collaborative learning. Pre-test, post-test, and ethical dilemma creation were used as analysis techniques. These data were analyzed descriptively to calculate mean scores, percentage increases, and N-gain values to determine improvements in participants’ understanding of the VAKE approach. The results showed an increase in teachers’ understanding of the integration of values and knowledge in learning, with an average score of 88.6, indicating an improvement of 8.6 points (43.5%) compared to the pre-test results. This finding suggests that participants’ understanding improved significantly after receiving the training materials through the community service program. Participants also successfully designed ethical dilemmas as learning media to promote students’ critical thinking. Overall, this community service program contributed to improving teachers’ pedagogical competence, strengthening students’ character, and supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4.

Abstract

Amidst rapid urbanization and the large-scale migration of young people from rural areas to cities and abroad, a group of rural residents continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to staying in their villages and actively contributing to local development. This study aims to: 1) describe the various contributions of rural youth who assume leadership roles in mobilizing communities to improve collective welfare; 2) analyze youth behavior in building community networks that support sustainable livelihoods; 3) identify key factors influencing rural youth leadership in village development. The research employed a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to capture the lived experiences of rural youth leaders. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, supported by observation and documentation. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman interactive model, including data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings reveal that rural youth function as agents of community-based initiatives and the strengthening of social competitiveness. Youth leadership revitalizes mutual cooperation, social solidarity, and local independence, enabling communities to respond adaptively to socio-economic challenges. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on youth-led collective leadership as a sustainable alternative to rural out-migration, linking grassroots youth agency with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Practically, the findings offer a replicable strategy for policymakers and rural development practitioners to empower youth as key drivers of inclusive and sustainable village development.

Abstract

Sexuality education constitutes an important aspect in supporting adolescent development; however, its implementation within community contexts is often influenced by strong social and cultural norms. This condition causes adolescents’ learning experiences to remain insufficiently understood, particularly from their subjective perspectives. This study aims to explore adolescents’ experiences and meaning-making regarding community-based sexuality education. The study employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. The research was conducted within a youth organization in Wedi Village, Gedangan District, involving 15 informants consisting of 10 adolescents as primary informants and 5 supporting informants, including the neighborhood head, youth organization administrators, and community leaders. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis based on Braun and Clarke’s framework, supported by triangulation and member checking to ensure data validity. The findings reveal that adolescents tend to interpret sexuality in normative ways, experience conflicts between social values and personal curiosity, and engage in community learning spaces that are not yet fully open and inclusive. These findings indicate that community-based sexuality education is not merely a process of information delivery, but also a social experience shaped by norms, interactions, and adolescents’ subjective meaning-making processes. This study contributes to emphasizing the importance of developing sexuality education approaches that are more dialogical, participatory, and contextual within community environments.

Abstract

Non-formal education serves as a strategic pathway for adult learners who require flexibility and life-relevant learning. However, qualitative studies examining the role of Self-Directed Learning (SDL) in shaping authentic self-competence and consistent self-control remain limited. This study aims to explore the experiences of learning citizens in implementing SDL and its impact on self-competence and the stability of self-control. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design conducted in several Community Learning Centers (PKBM) in Malang Regency and Malang City. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document analysis, and analyzed using an inductive thematic approach. The findings indicate that SDL fosters more authentic self-competence through personal goal setting, contextual learning strategies, and experiential self-evaluation. In addition, SDL strengthens consistent self-control through emotional regulation, time management, perseverance, and reflective decision-making. SDL is not merely a single skill but a pedagogical process influenced by tutor support, learning flexibility, and social-collaborative interaction. The implications highlight the importance of non-formal learning designs that provide structured autonomy, reflective practices, and self-regulatory support to enhance authentic competencies and self-control among learning citizens.

Abstract

Cultural heritage plays a strategic role in shaping local identity and strengthening learners’ character. The Ethno-Project-Based Learning model is a project-based instructional approach that integrates local cultural values as sources of learning, innovation, and skill development. This study aims to examine the implementation of this model within a learning community that collaborates with cultural figures and the local society, focusing on the transmission of Topeng Malangan culture as part of the local wisdom of the Greater Malang region. This research adopts a qualitative case study approach. Participants include cultural practitioners, community members, and learners from various age groups. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The findings indicate that: (a) Ethno-Project-Based Learning is implemented through culturally grounded projects such as mask-making, traditional dance, and folklore storytelling, enabling contextual and experience-based learning; (b) learner engagement emerges through intergenerational collaboration, where cultural figures, facilitators, and youth interact as co-learners; and (c) the internalization of cultural values, such as responsibility, solidarity, and cultural ethics—is reflected in learners’ participation, attitudes, and creative outputs during the learning process. These findings suggest that the model contributes to the transmission of cultural heritage by fostering active participation, meaningful engagement, and the internalization of value within the learning community. In this context, Topeng Malangan serves not only as a subject of study but also as a medium for character formation through the appreciation of embedded moral and cultural values. Keywords: ethno-project-based learning, community education, cultural heritage, cultural preservation

Abstract

Abstract: The realisation of the ‘Golden Generation of 2045’ and high-quality education must be underpinned by equipping young children with 21st-century skills. The implementation of current learning models has, in fact, shown limitations in integrating critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration, whilst also instilling character and spiritual values. The aim of this study is to analyse the implementation of the SMART (Speak, Motivate, Act, Reflect, Thrive) learning model in developing the 4C skills in early childhood. A qualitative research approach was adopted, with interviews as the primary data collection technique, supported by observation and documentation. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns in the application of the SMART model and its contribution to the development of children’s 4C skills. The results of the study indicate that the SMART model is capable of integrating  the development of 4C skills into all stages of learning. The ‘Speak’ stage: children demonstrate increased confidence in speaking and the ability to lead activities through the use of microphones; ‘Motivate’ and ‘Act’: encourage active participation, responsibility and the ability to collaborate in group activities; ‘Reflect’ and ‘Thrive’ help children develop reflective skills, self-confidence and readiness to face more complex learning challenges. Consequently, this model serves as an effective learning alternative for the holistic development of the 4C skills in early years education.
