Abstract

The prominence of integrated textbooks in English Language Teaching (ELT) has significantly increased, as many textbooks now include not only a primary book (Pupil’s book) but also supplementary materials such as Teacher’s Handbook, Students’ Workbook, Cassette, etc. Despite this, the utilization of the pupil's book along with its additional resources remains relatively low. This raises the question of whether there is still potential for teachers and students to effectively employ the pupil's book without relying on its supplementary materials. Utilizing a case study research design, this study examined key aspects of the textbook that are considered advantageous in the materials development process. The findings indicate that elements such as the aims and approach, content, methodology, exercises, and activities in the pupil's book exhibit strong coherence with its supplementary materials. Notwithstanding this circumstance, educators possess the capacity to formulate both individual and group activities exclusively through the utilization of the pupil's book as a foundational resource, without dependence on supplementary materials.

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges encountered by public and private elementary school teachers in urban and rural areas when applying the Asesmen Kompetensi Minumum (AKM). This study employed a qualitative phenomenological method, interviewing four teachers from various circumstances. The findings reveal a number of challenges, including an increased workload, pressure to achieve high AKM scores, limited access to professional development, contradicting holistic education values, feelings of isolation, and policy ambiguity. These variables have a direct effect on teacher emotional well-being, motivation, and instructional efficacy. Teachers are expected to overcome these obstacles with more support from schools and the government, such as continuous training, collaboration rooms, and emotional support.

Abstract

AbstractThe presence of diagrams or infographics in English textbooks is believed to support Indonesia’s curriculum goal of communication using multimodal resources. However, the functions of infographics in language learning have not been well understood. This study examines how infographics accompanied by verbal texts can convey visual metalanguage. The images from an English textbook designed for X grades were used as the basis for this study. Drawing on the theories of Visual Design Grammar (Kress & Leeuwen, 2006) and Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004, 2013), this study explores the images and instructions in infographics. The systemic functional approach to multimodal discourse analysis (SF-MDA) was employed. The results of this study reveal the functions of the images in the textbook and how metalanguage competencies can support the teaching of multimodal texts in a representative and compositional manner. The study also provides several pedagogical implications for teachers in teaching diagrammatic images.

Abstract

On Instagram, code-switching has become an intriguing subject of study because users often employ more than one language or even a mix of languages and visual elements (such as emojis) in their posts. The purpose of this research is to identify the types of code-switching commonly occurring in Instagram content and to explore the reasons influencers engage in code-switching. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive design to describe and analyze language use practices in Instagram posts. The findings reveal three types of code-switching: inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching, and emblematic switching. Furthermore, six reasons for code-switching were identified: discussing a specific topic, emphasizing a point, using interjections, repeating for clarification, clarifying speech content for the audience, and expressing group identity.

Abstract

Corpus analysis plays pivotal role in investigating language use within EMI contexts. However, there is still a lack of research on identifying specialized vocabulary with its lexical density along with the multimodal analysis in the science education context. This research aims to identify frequently used specialized vocabulary, measure lexical density, and investigate multimodality in the students’ writing. Quantitative and qualitative methods using AntConc and Compleat Lexical Tutor and Kress and Leeweun multimodal analysis framework were employed. The data, totaling 12.587 words, were collected from mindmap assignments, submitted by 62 students at the International Program in Science Education, specifically in the Biotechnology subject, over a span of four consecutive years. The findings showed 20 specialized vocabularies in Biotechnology based on the frequency. The lexical density of the data ranges from 61% to 97%, or by average 78%, indicating that the majority of these words are disciplinary-related content words. This study also revealed the interconnection of the visual and verbal elements in the meaning-making of the disciplinary concepts. This study confirms that the specialized vocabulary, lexical density, and multimodality are interrelated components of communication in specialized domains, which should be considered for pedagogical purposes.

Abstract

This study examines the roles of translanguaging practices in the linguistic landscape in a rural tourism area and their contribution to showcasing cultural identity from the perspective of activity theory. Translanguaging emerges as a significant tool in rural tourism, serving as a cultural hub where diverse linguistic and cultural expressions intersect to attract visitors with their unique nature, heritage, and traditions. Through an analysis of activity theory, this study explores the translanguaging practices of signage containing verbal and other multimodal semiotic resources at Alamendah in constructing and promoting tourism activities and its local cultural identity. The data were gathered from photographs of signage, observation, and interviews with the tourism manager, staff, and the local elder to see how translanguaging practices enable the community to showcase the local heritage and engage with local and global audiences. The findings revealed that translanguaging practices as the mediating tool seen from the 182 signage where 51 (29%) were written in monolingual, which is Indonesian that represents the official language, 71 % were written in bilingual or multilingual, combining Indonesian, English, Sundanese, and Sundanese old scripts. The use of Indonesian and Sundanese dominated the signage, indicating the strong local cultural representation and identity. The prevalent use of Sundanese exemplifies the heightened community awareness of the Sundanese heritage identity with the expectation that visitors would learn more about the language and culture through tourism activities. The community and other stakeholders` contribution to the public signage signifies distributive and creative power relations and division of labor.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze themes as elements of teachers’ questioning strategies as a scaffold for learners to understand and construct knowledge and their contribution to presenting knowledge in writing. This study followed a qualitative case research design involving two teachers who differed in their experience profiles in the teaching of hortatory exposition to 11th-grade EFL students in the Indonesian context. The data included teachers' questions and students' texts analyzed by deploying the conception of a Theme system in Systemic Functional Linguistics to identify how themes present a topic, contribute to the management of interaction, and structure ideas. The findings show that both teachers emphasized more on topical themes that function to familiarize the learners with the topics than themes that function to hedge and confirm the topics. These thematic features contribute to constructing emerging and distinctive features of the students’ hortatory exposition writing. It was found that the novice teacher posed more frequent questions on all themes that indicated more varied questioning strategies. Moreover, the quality of the students’ hortatory exposition essays relied on the presentation and sequence of themes and arguments attributed to the teachers’ questions. Overall, the study indicates the significance of teachers' questioning strategies for eliciting the students’ presentation and construction of knowledge in their argumentative style.

Abstract

The textbook used for fifth grade elementary students in an elementary school in Kuningan, West Java claims to offer Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) questions on the cover of the textbook and some questions have been labeled as HOTS questions. This research investigated the validity of this claim, analyzing the levels of cognitive domain of each question to determine whether the labeled questions are truly HOTS questions or Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) questions. This study conducted qualitative research with document analysis of HOTS labeled questions in the textbook entitled “Modul Pembelajaran Bina Prestasi Bahasa Inggris Kelas 5 Untuk SD/MI'' published by CV Larassukma which were analyzed using a revised Bloom’s taxonomy framework. Additionally, an interview with a fifth grade English teacher was conducted to explore the teacher's perspective regarding the HOTS questions in the textbook. The results revealed that most labeled HOTS questions are in fact LOTS questions (90.9%), with a majority covering Remembering (C1), followed by Understanding (C2), and Applying (C3). Only two questions were qualified as HOTS, particularly Creating (C6) questions (9.1%). The teacher's perspective mirrored these findings, indicating the inconsistency between the textbook's claims with its actual content, also discussing the textbook’s effectiveness and the teacher’s approach for implementing HOTS in the classroom. This study provides valuable insights for teachers, curriculum designers, textbook creators, and publishers, emphasizing the need for accurate representation of HOTS in educational materials to enhance the quality of future education.
