Abstract

Brown tick, Rhicephalus sanguineus generally known as a very adaptive tick, is widely spread on tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions, and infested dogs living on not only rural but urban areas. Synthetic acaricides are the most widely control measures. However, with the development of tick resistance, plant-derived components are highly investigated. The present study aims to investigate the activity of Crecentia cujete Linn. leaves extract on R. sanguineus. Fifty adult R. sanguineus were collected from local dogs and used in this study. Ticks are divided into the control and treatment groups. Aquadest and deltamethrin were sprayed to ticks in the negative and positive control groups, respectively. The three treatment groups were given maja leaves extract of 2.5%, 5%, and 10%. The tick mortality was observed for 12 hours of exposure to the extracts. All extracts exhibited similar lethal effects on R. sanguineus with total mortality (100%) after 4 hours exposure, compared to the standard therapy. The highest extract concentration (10%) reduces ticks faster compare to other concentrations. Thus, this study suggests that strong acaricidal activity and mortality rate was dose-dependent. This finding needs further scientific investigation to prove.

Abstract

Chromolaena odorata, a member of Asteraceae, is a tropical shrub that grows throughout the year and can dominate pastures. The tropical weed is known as a medicinal plant and has the potential as a natural insecticide. For local people in NTT, the crude extract of the leaves is used to treat myasis on the livestock. C. odorata is also used as silage or food alternative for livestock. This study aims to determine the content of bioactive compounds in C. odorata leaves and determine the extract yield value, as scientific validation of local wisdom in NTT. This research began with the collection of fresh C. odorata leaves, extraction by maceration using 70% ethanol as solvent, solvent evaporation, and phytochemical screening. Phytochemical screening showed that the leaf extract of C. odorata from Kupang City contained high amounts of flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, triterpenes and steroids and were tested negative for saponins. The extract yield value is 6.09%, means that the extract contains bioactive compunds in high concentration. Further research needs to be done to find out in more detail the content of secondary metabolites from C. odorata leaves and its activity in promote wound healing on livestock in NTT.

Abstract

Abstract

Nowadays, there is an increasing demand for medicines to treat many types of diseases. Lunasia amara is one of the medicinal plants used by Indonesian people for a long time. This study aimed to identify the secondary metabolites of L. amara stem bark using phytochemical analysis and then assess its antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Metabolite extraction will be carried out with an ethanol solvent, and antioxidant activity will be determined using the α, α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays. Antibacterial experiments were conducted against two types of bacteria: Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. From the results of the phytochemical investigation, the predominant compound group is alkaloid. The ethanol extract metabolites have antioxidant activity and belong to the strong antioxidant group with an IC50 value of 77.96 ppm. Antibacterial activity was weak at concentrations as high as 20%. Based on these findings, further assays can be conducted, such as cytotoxic activity against various cancer cells.

Abstract

Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease and is still a threat to public health, especially in areas with high populations of disease-carrying animals. In 2024, there was a case of rabies in Sillu village, one of the villages in Kupang Regency. This village area is adjacent to Camplong II village, which is the locus of the Undana Veterinary Study Program KKN. Camplong II village is a strategic location for implementing rabies socialization and education programs. This activity aimed to increase public knowledge and awareness, especially among school children, regarding the dangers of rabies, prevention, and initial handling of bites from rabies-transmitting animals (HPR). The methods used were pre-test, socialization and education, distribution of pamphlets, interactive discussions, and post-tests. The evaluation results showed an 82% increase in children's understanding of rabies after the activity took place. This program shows that the right socialization and education approach can increase public awareness in efforts to prevent rabies.

Abstract

Rabies remains a critical public health concern, particularly in areas with limited resources and insufficient preventive efforts. Early education plays a vital role in raising awareness and promoting preventive behavior. This community service activity aimed to educate elementary school children about rabies through a creative and enjoyable method—coloring activities. The program was conducted at SD Inpres Nenonaheun, located in Nunhila Village, Mollo Barat Sub-district, Timor Tengah Selatan Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It involved interactive coloring sessions using rabies-themed educational materials specifically designed for children aged 7 to 12. This activity combined visual learning and storytelling to convey essential information about rabies transmission, symptoms, and prevention. Evaluation through pre- and post-activity questionnaires revealed a significant improvement in the children's understanding of rabies. The use of coloring activities as an educational tool proved to be an effective strategy for raising awareness among elementary school students, indicating its potential for broader application in similar rural settings.

Abstract

Chromolaena odorata is popular as a traditional medicine in Indonesia for wound healing. In East Nusa Tenggara Province, this plant is used for wound healing. The present study aims to formulate and evaluate the natural ointment containing C. Odorata leaves extract. A total of 3.2 Kg of fresh C. odorata leaves were ground into powder, 246 g. The leaf powder was then macerated with 70% ethanol solvent for 72 hours, followed by evaporation at 60°C, resulting in 14.61 g of concentrated extract with a yield of 5.94%. The extract was formulated into ointment preparations with concentrations of 10% and 20%, using white vaseline as a basis. Alpha-tocopherol and propyl paraben were added as antioxidants and preservatives. Evaluation of the ointment preparations included organoleptic assessment, homogeneity test, pH determination, and spreadability test. The results indicated that the semi-solid cream had a dark greenish colour with the characteristic aroma of C. odorata leaf extract. The ointment preparations were homogeneous and had a safe pH value of 6.2 and 6.3 for 10% and 20% concentrations, respectively. The natural ointment exhibited good spreadability with measurements of 5.57 cm and 5.23 cm for the 10% and 20% concentrations, respectively.
