Abstract

Euphemisms are an important part of the Indonesian language tradition, including in big cities like Palembang and Padang. The term refers to the use of more subtle words or expressions to replace words that are considered rude, taboo, or impolite. This study aims to examine the use of euphemisms in daily conversations in the two cities, each of which has different language features and cultural influences. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data collection techniques used interviews and observations. The data sources came from the observations of researchers and native speakers of Palembang and Minangkabau languages. Data analysis uses data reduction, data explanation and concluding. Data validity uses triangulation. The results showed that the use of euphemisms in these two cities is different, based on the theory put forward by Allan and Burridge. In the Minangkabau language, there are nine forms of euphemisms, while in the Palembang language, there are thirteen forms. Both languages reflect the way people maintain social harmony and show respect for others through polite and subtle language. This research is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the role of language in maintaining politeness values in Palembang and Padang communities.

Abstract

This study addresses the limited scholarly attention given to the organizing function in the management of Arabic language programs at Islamic boarding schools, despite its critical role in enhancing students’ language proficiency. Focusing on Darussalam Sumani Solok Islamic Boarding School, the research aims to examine how organizational structures and practices contribute to the effectiveness of its Arabic language program. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the study involves purposively selected program organizers and students as participants. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and document analysis, and were subsequently analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that the program is systematically organized through OSPPD, featuring structured task delegation and scheduled activities such as ilqā’ mufradāt, muḥādathah, muḥāḍarah, kitāb kuning, and art performances that collectively foster a bi’ah lughawīyah (Arabic-speaking environment). Despite these strengths, the program faces persistent challenges, including low student motivation, limited vocabulary acquisition, an unconducive learning environment, and the absence of exemplary teaching models. The study concludes that while the organizing function is moderately effective, it requires reinforcement through cultural strategies, intensive coaching, and broader stakeholder engagement to ensure program sustainability. These findings underscore the significance of structured management and a coherent curriculum in advancing Arabic language acquisition within Islamic boarding school contexts. Further research should expand to multiple institutions and incorporate mixed-methods designs to enhance generalizability and depth of understanding.

Abstract

Diagnostic assessment plays a crucial role in the successful implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum, as it provides a foundation for adaptive, responsive, and differentiated learning. This study aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of the role of diagnostic assessment in identifying students’ readiness, learning needs, strengths, and weaknesses, as well as their socio-emotional conditions. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with library research as the main method, this study analyzes various sources, including official modules from the Ministry of Education and Culture, scientific journals, reference books, and relevant previous studies. The findings indicate that diagnostic assessment, classified into cognitive and non-cognitive types, enables teachers to design effective instructional strategies, implement remedial and enrichment programs, and foster collaboration among educators. Despite its advantages, diagnostic assessment also presents challenges such as potential misinterpretation, time constraints, and the need for adequate teacher training. Overall, diagnostic assessment serves not only as an instrument to measure student readiness but also as a theoretical construct that bridges curriculum objectives with learner diversity, thereby strengthening the foundation of differentiated and holistic education in the Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

The Qur'an, as the divine revelation to Prophet Muhammad, employs Arabic language, necessitating a deep understanding of Arabic linguistics, including semantics (ʿilm al-dalālah). This study explores the phenomenon of tadhadh (antonyms) in the Qur'an from a semantic perspective, aiming to identify and analyze antonymic word pairs and their implications in Qur'anic discourse. Using a qualitative approach with library research methods, the study examines Qur'anic verses, classical and modern linguistic sources, and scholarly works on Arabic semantics. The findings reveal five types of antonyms based on Al-Khammas’ classification: (1) absolute antonyms (taḍādd ḥādd), (2) graded antonyms (taḍādd mutadarrij), (3) converse antonyms (taḍādd ʿaks), (4) perpendicular antonyms (taḍādd ʿamūdī), and (5) straight-line antonyms (taḍādd imtidādī). Examples from various Qur'anic verses illustrate how these antonyms enhance rhetorical and theological depth. The study underscores the importance of semantic analysis in Qur'anic exegesis, contributing to broader linguistic and interpretive studies of the Qur'an.
