Abstract

The transition from higher education to the professional world presents a significant challenge for final-year students. One crucial factor contributing to career readiness is self-efficacy, which refers to an individual's belief in their ability to perform specific tasks. This study reviews the relationship between self-efficacy and career readiness based on existing literature. The analysis reveals that students with higher levels of self-efficacy demonstrate greater career readiness, increased confidence in career decision-making, and a more proactive approach to exploring job opportunities. These findings emphasize the importance of strengthening self-efficacy through higher education and career counseling services to enhance students’ preparedness for entering the workforce.

Abstract

Abstract

This study specifically examines the English teaching material needs of lecturers at STIT Tanggamus and STIT Pringsewu to enhance students’ critical thinking skills. Recognizing that critical thinking is an essential competence in higher education, particularly in English language learning, this research adopts a mixed-methods design to explore the types of materials currently in use, lecturers’ perceptions of students’ critical thinking abilities, and the gaps between existing resources and instructional needs. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, utilizing questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis for data collection. The findings highlight a prevalent reliance on authentic materials, underscoring the need for explicit critical thinking frameworks and contextual relevance within the Islamic educational environment. Lecturers expressed concerns regarding students’ limited critical thinking capacity, citing language barriers, insufficient scaffolding, and lack of pedagogical support. It is crucial to redesign English teaching materials systematically to integrate higher-order thinking tasks, align with students' cultural and religious backgrounds, and provide clear instructional guidance. The findings highlight the essential requirements for both material development and professional training to enhance the cultivation of critical thinking in English language education within Indonesian Islamic higher education institutions.

Abstract

In religious university environments, the development of English-speaking skills among non-English major students presents unique psychological and contextual challenges. Ideally, students should be able to integrate language mastery with their religious and academic identity to face global demands. However, empirical findings reveal that many students experience high anxiety, lack of confidence, and inconsistent institutional support, particularly in the informal learning environment of the Ma’had program. Through a qualitative inquiry involving in-depth interviews, this study identifies four major themes: (1) Psychological Barriers in Speaking English, (2) Contextual Gaps between Academic Programs and Dormitory Initiatives, (3) Adaptive and Maladaptive Coping Strategies, and (4) Students' Aspirations for Effective English Learning Environments. The research highlights that although formal academic programs provide structured learning, the informal settings often lack systematic reinforcement, leading to fragmented experiences in language acquisition. Students express a strong need for a more integrated, empathetic, and motivational approach in both academic and dormitory settings. This study contributes to the theoretical understanding of English learning in faith-based institutions and offers practical implications for curriculum designers, language instructors, and religious educational policymakers aiming to bridge the psychological and contextual gaps. The findings advocate for the design of supportive programs that not only build linguistic competence but also align with students’ religious values and future aspirations, fostering a more holistic development of English proficiency in faith-driven academic environments.

Abstract

EFL classrooms have long treated verbal participation as the primary evidence of language learning, a conflation that places introverted students at a structural disadvantage before any instruction begins. This study examines what those students are actually doing during the silences teachers routinely read as disengagement. Twelve introverted tertiary EFL students in South Sumatra, Indonesia, participated in in-depth phenomenological interviews and Stimulated Recall Interviews (SRI) conducted against video footage of their own EFL classes. Inductive thematic analysis of the resulting data identified three superordinate themes: internal language processing, metacognitive monitoring, and learner resilience. Students were engaging in silent rehearsal, mental grammar mapping, self-monitoring, and hypothesis testing, cognitive work that left no audible trace in the classroom. Their resilience took the form of compensatory strategies and self-directed learning routines that were deliberately constructed outside class hours. These findings reposition silence as a metacognitive choice rather than an affective deficit, and introversion as a form of strategic competence that standard oral assessment rubrics cannot detect. EFL teachers need assessment and participation structures that register the range of ways learners actually engage with a language.
