Abstract

The urgency of studying Non-Formal Education arises from the pressures of modernization and digital disruption, which threaten the preservation of local knowledge. Its relevance lies in understanding the role of Non-Formal Education as a last bastion for enculturation and identity formation amid cultural erosion. This article aims to critically examine it from an anthropological perspective, analyzing the dynamics of enculturation, manifestations of power, and its role in cultural preservation. This qualitative research with an interpretive ethnographic approach uses participant observation and in-depth interviews in indigenous communities, with inductive data analysis. The main findings show that enculturation is a negotiated and selective process driven by youth. However, the presence of asymmetrical power relations, including senior hegemony and gender difference marginalization, results in structural inequalities. Overall, this research was conducted to contribute to Critical Educational Anthropology by presenting a diagnostic model that collaborates power and agency into a framework referred to as enculturation. This conclusion shows that the success of cultural preservation depends on the transformation of out-of-school education into a system that is more inclusive and dialogical for everyone. It is highly recommended that further studies use a mixed-methods approach to measure findings on this phenomenon.

Abstract

The dynamics of educational institutions, which are increasingly vulnerable to sexual violence, demand a new paradigm through strengthening students' capacities via preventive actions based on education. One way to reduce the risk of sexual violence against children in school environments is through a more participatory and context-appropriate prevention education model. This article describes the implementation of a community service program in the form of sexual violence prevention training for students in the school environment, namely at UPT SPF SMP Negeri 26 Makassar. The program is designed to strengthen students' self-protection literacy through a participatory approach that integrates dialogical lectures, group discussions, and written reflections. The novelty of the program lies in its emphasis on fostering student agency in recognizing power relations, identifying risky situations, and formulating self-protection strategies relevant to students' daily contexts at school. The results show changes in awareness and sensitivity of students' collective commitment in maintaining school safety from acts of violence. Instilling understanding of sexual risks becomes more effective when students formulate self-protection strategies. Cross-sector collaboration and participatory interaction based on dialogue for students provide solutions in addressing sensitive issues in secondary education. The main recommendation is directed towards forming a preventive synergy between the school and families to create comprehensive protection strategies.

Abstract

Modernization is a multidimensional phenomenon that brings rapid and complex social, cultural, and structural changes to modern society. This process not only brings progress in technology and industrialization, but also raises various social challenges such as urbanization, shifting values, changes in family structure, weakening social solidarity, and transformations in religious and cultural relations. Therefore, understanding modern society requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary scientific approach. This study aims to analyze the role of sociology and anthropology in understanding the dynamics of modern society and their contributions in responding to the challenges of modernity. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a literature study approach, utilizing secondary data sourced from relevant books and scientific journal articles. The results of the study show that sociology plays an important role in analyzing changes in social structure, social movements, contemporary issues, and the impact of technology and social media on social relations. Meanwhile, anthropology provides a deep understanding of cultural identity, multiculturalism, acculturation, symbols and meanings of popular culture, as well as the application of applied anthropology in modern society. The collaboration between sociology and anthropology allows for a more complete understanding of socio-cultural realities, especially in the context of Muslim communities in Indonesia. Thus, the integration of these two disciplines becomes a strategic analytical framework in formulating inclusive social policies, maintaining cultural diversity, and building social harmony amid the ever-evolving tide of modernization.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of Game-Based Learning (GBL) as an innovative instructional approach for improving students’ understanding of social system concepts in Social Studies education. A quasi-experimental design employing a Non-Equivalent Control Group Design was used. The participants consisted of 30 eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Balocci, divided into an experimental group (n = 15) and a control group (n = 15). Data were collected through pretests, posttests, and classroom observations. The experimental group received instruction through Game-Based Learning activities, while the control group received conventional instruction. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Shapiro–Wilk normality tests, Levene’s homogeneity test, Independent Samples t-test, and N-Gain analysis. The results revealed a significant difference between the two groups, with the experimental group achieving a higher posttest mean score (M = 90.75) than the control group (M = 72.20). The N-Gain score also indicated a higher level of learning improvement in the experimental group (0.78) compared with the control group (0.58). These findings suggest that Game-Based Learning effectively enhances students’ learning outcomes, engagement, and conceptual understanding of social systems. The study concludes that GBL is a promising pedagogical strategy for transforming abstract social studies concepts into meaningful and engaging learning experiences.
